'We ask Treasury to shift money to SAFA for VAR'
For over a year, McKenzie has been promising to introduce VAR to help minimise mistakes in South African top-flight football.
Last year, he announced that R80 million had been set aside for the project. However, in his latest update, McKenzie revealed that no money has been reserved for VAR.
'We are also finalising the process of funding VAR to ensure that football matches, from the Premier Soccer League through to the international fixtures we host, are fairer and meet global standards,' McKenzie told the parliament this week.
'It is a necessity. We see stadiums vandalised when bad refereeing happens, and the success of teams like Mamelodi Sundowns makes global teams want to play here.
'But they get second thoughts because we don't have VAR,' he concluded.
Earlier this year, Gayton promised football fans that VAR would be implemented in April, with a budget of R80 million set to be allocated.
'We could never pay for VAR without budget having been passed, that would have been corruption. We are in the process of asking Treasury to shift money to SAFA according to our budget. VAR is coming. The money is available,' McKenzie wrote on on X (Twitter) on Friday.
Football fans were not happy with Gayton's latest statement, feeling that the minister had misled the nation when he 'promised VAR in April'.

Kaizer Chiefs guaranteed ONE winner at PSL Awards
The 2024/25 PSL season was one – another one – to forget for Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs. Amakhosi finished ninth in what turned out to be a 15-team Betway Premiership and missed out – again – on qualifying for the lucrative MTN8 this season. The one shining light, however, was their 2-1 Nedbank Cup win over bitter rivals Orlando Pirates at the Moses Mabhida Stadium back in May this year. The Glamour Boys were rewarded for that victory when the Premier Soccer League (PSL) announced the nominees for the 2024/25 PSL Awards later this month. The awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday, 29 July, at 19:00 and will be broadcast live on SuperSport PSL Channel and SABC Sport. In the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament category, all three nominees – Inacio Miguel, Pule Mmodi, and Gaston Sirino – hail from Kaizer Chiefs. 'We don't want Royal AM': Supporters of MaMkhize's new club
A group of football supporters of Mbabane Highlanders FC – now renamed Mbabane Highlanders AM FC – are rejecting the new position of power given to MaMkhize, real name Shauwn Mkhize. Last week, the businesswoman was announced as president of the eSwatini club. She has since called for 'unity' among fans and expressed her desire for the club to relive its 'glory days.' This news comes months after SARS seized her South African team, Royal AM, to pay off her R40 million debt. The club was later expelled from the PSL. During her first address as Mbabalane Highlanders AM FC on Sunday, 20 July, the club revealed that MaMkhize had 'called for unity and urged all stakeholders to play their part in restoring the club to its former glory'. It added: 'She emphasized the importance of protecting the club's image, encouraging everyone to refrain from public commentary that could hinder efforts to build a strong and respected brand'. 'Most significantly, she pledged her full commitment to making Mbabane Highlanders AM the leading football club in the country—on and off the pitch'. Last week, the eSwatini club confirmed that MaMkhize had signed a three-year presidency deal as the club's president.
