Mario Barrios retains welterweight title belt in controversial draw with Manny Pacquiao

New York Times2 days ago
Manny Pacquiao still had plenty of pep in his step, if not a lot behind his punches, as his comeback fight at the age of 46 ended in a majority draw Saturday night in Las Vegas. Mario Barrios, 16 years younger, won the last three rounds to secure the majority draw decision and retain his WBC welterweight championship belt.

'I thought I won the fight,' said Pacquiao, who is now 62-8-3. 'It was a very close fight. My opponent was very tough. … It's an inspiration to older fighters that, with hard work, you can still fight.'
It takes two to make that scenario work, and Barrios was tentative and let Pacquiao get off first in exchanges and finish many rounds with a flourish to try to impress the judges. Barrios was never hurt and landed some hard straight right hands throughout the fight, but it wasn't until Round 10 that he started applying some real pressure.

'I thought I pulled it out, but it was an absolute honor to share the ring with Manny,' said Barrios, now 29-2-2. 'His stamina was crazy, and he can still crack (punches). He is still a very awkward fighter to try and figure out. … He still has a lot in the tank.'
Pacquiao, who was making his return to the ring after a four-year absence, was asked if he wants to keep fighting.
'I think so. I think so, God willing,' he said.
Barrios was all for the idea of a rematch.
'This was huge for boxing, and I would love to do it again,' he said.
The MGM Grand crowd was chanting Pacquiao's name before and during the fight, and Barrios gave the eight-division world champion too much respect despite his trainer's repeated objections between rounds.
Pacquiao started quickly and snapped his right jab early and often but wasn't able to land any substantial combinations until the seventh round, as he was having a hard time keeping his balance.
The judges had him up 5-4 after nine rounds, but Pacquiao bought some time before the 10th round with some loose tape on his glove that had to be fixed.

Barrios finished strong, winning that 10th round before landing 10 power punches in Round 11 and doing enough in Round 12 to secure the tie — or win the fight, as The Athletic had him up 115-113 like one of the three judges did. But the two other judges scored the fight 114-114.

Former Colorado star KJ Simpson wins NBA Summer League title with the Charlotte Hornets

Former Colorado basketball star point guard KJ Simpson concluded his second summer league stint with an NBA Summer League championship after the Charlotte Hornets beat the Sacramento Kings, 83-78. Simpson started for the Hornets along with Charlotte's 2025 first-round selection, former Duke guard Kon Knueppel. Despite the win, Simpson struggled offensively in the final but made up for it in other areas. In 31 minutes of action, Simpson tallied 11 points, seven rebounds and five assists on 4-of-15 shooting from the field and 1-of-6 from 3-point range. Knueppel, who was named the game's MVP, praised the former Colorado guard for being the Hornets' leader throughout the Summer League. Simpson was quick to point out that Knueppel was deserving of the award. "Kon, nah, he deserved that, man. He was excellent in this game," Simpson said. "We all played well. It [the MVP award] could have been anybody. I just wanted to go out there and help lead the team. Just be a good vocal leader. It was a team win, shoutout to Kon, shoutout to everybody, man. Simpson is entering his second year in the NBA and has shown significant growth during the 10-day summer event, averaging 16 points, 5.7 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game in six Summer League games. The Hornets have to like what they saw from Simpson, a former second-round pick, leading Charlotte's young core to a title. Simpson and the Hornets got the win over former Buff Nique Clifford, who scored 10 points in 33 minutes of action. Follow Charlie Strella on X, Threads and Instagram. Report: DJ Chark recently visited with Bears

Receiver DJ Chark may be closer to finding a new team. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Chark recently visited with the Bears. Chark, 28, spent last season with the Chargers, but appeared in just seven games for the team due to injury. He finished the season with just four catches for 31 yards with a touchdown, playing a total of 105 offensive snaps. In 2023, Chark caught 35 passes for 525 yards with five touchdowns for the Panthers. In a recent interview with Kyle Odegard of Chark noted that he's weighing his options for his NFL career. 'It will have to be something that makes sense, from a family perspective and also from an Xs and Os perspective,' Chark said. 'Getting up and going to any team just for the excitement – I'll always love the game, but at this point, putting myself and my family in a great position is what's ideal for me.' A one-time Pro Bowler, Chark eclipsed 1,000 yards in 2019 for the Jaguars. In 76 games with 51 starts, Chark has 216 career receptions for 3,100 yards with 24 TDs. The Bears currently have DJ Moore, Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, Maurice Alexander, Myles Boykin, Devin Duvernay, John Jackson, JP Richardson, Tyler Scott, Samori Toure, and Olamide Zaccheaus on their roster at receiver.
