Ask me about my last trip and the first thing I'll tell you about will probably be something or somewhere I ate. The pintxos-punctuated weekend in San Sebastian where slivers of jamon iberico were the bedrock of breakfast. The double helping of delicate sugar-shell spheres filled with passionfruit and coffee in a Michelin-starred restaurant with rooms overlooking Lake Annecy. The tart pomegranate juice squeezed before our eyes in Tel Aviv's Carmel market as the mercury surged to 35C. The zingy avo on toast that ended up playing a tasty second fiddle to stroking a giraffe in Kenya. Succulent pit-cooked mechoui lamb and mint tea in Marrakesh's spice-lined souk.
You see, I fall firmly in the 'will travel for food' camp; having written about gastronomic travel for over a decade you could call it a perk of the job. Even off the clock, eating out in a new destination can be the most memorable take-home experience from any trip abroad — something that stays with me long after the tan fades. Here's what I've learnt.
Delving into a country's food scene is a gateway to its culture. On my first day somewhere I hotfoot it to the local market. I've nibbled my way from Tomme de Savoie cheese to impossibly pretty pastries in Provence; braved stinky durian and prickly rambutan in Bali; and picked up cactus jam and cholla bud pico de gallo in the Sonoran desert. Consider the market a foundation course in the unique and perhaps unfamiliar produce that will pop up on regional menus — and a chance to ask in-the-know locals where they're eating.
Next stop Rome? Swap the brouhaha of Campo de' Fiori market and follow lauded local chefs like Cristina Bowerman to the historic Mercato Testaccio, on the ancient amphorae depository site of the old trade route. It's less touristy, and alongside produce (including plenty of offal) there are great snack stalls — tripe sandwiches at Mordi e Vai, anyone? In Berlin, join the Kreuzberg clan at the convivial Markthalle Neun — hit up Big Stuff Smoked BBQ, and keep eyes peeled for the regular Sunday Naschmarkt, in collaboration with Slow Food Berlin, which puts the city's artisanal bakeries and heritage grains to the fore.

Finding joy in food is one of life's great equalisers; something that transcends borders and unites when common language fails. It's always good to have a vague plan of where (and what) you'd like to eat. I recce early and pin points on an offline Google map — handy for avoiding paying extortionate roaming costs or worrying about ropey signal — so if I stumble upon a particular area I know I have solid options on hand when hunger strikes. Reading up before you travel also means that you can book ahead if needed and work out if a restaurant will be able to accommodate any dietary requirements.
It also pays to check opening hours. It's a running joke that you'll be hard-pushed to find an early supper in Spain, but securing a lunch table at 2pm can equally challenging in smaller towns across France, Switzerland and Denmark, where you should go early, especially if you want to enjoy more than one course.
Don't just rely on websites such as Tripadvisor. Sure, they're handy for less obvious destinations, but can you really trust Bob from Bristol's palate? I follow a social media trail: see where foodies you rate are heading to, go to the individual restaurant pages, then check if the chef has an account to see where they are eating locally. Similarly, tighten your search terms, don't just instinctively type 'best croissant in Paris', instead try 'where do Parisian chefs go for croissants?' And don't disregard food tours — the guide will know which of Mexico City's ubiquitous taquerias are the best (usually the one you'd never find yourself).Culinary Backstreets (culinarybackstreets.com) and Secret Food Tours (secretfoodtours.com) are good places to start for half and full-day tours in some of the more obvious foodie destinations. For shorter tours and more off-grid places, try Get Your Guide (getyourguide.com).

Let's be real: restaurants that are truly authentic don't need to advertise the fact. Unless someone who lives there is telling you that it's the real deal, don't be swayed by the spiel. Rather, look for longevity. In a competitive market, any place that's been on the scene for 20-odd years is usually doing something right.
Hotel restaurants can be hit and miss, but shouldn't always be avoided. My rule of thumb is to order a club sandwich — a universal benchmark — on room service. If they can nail this (and have a good range of local dishes on the in-room menu) it's worth giving the restaurant a go, especially after a long journey or day exploring. My best one? Soho House Berlin. And if you're happy to forgo facilities in exchange for quality food and a bit more personality, the rise of restaurants with rooms around the world is a win for gourmet travellers.
One of my biggest regrets was a four-hour-plus dégustation experience on an Easter trip to Barcelona. The restaurant was called Moments; it felt more like years. The food was wonderful, but after the third course I could see my chance of getting to the Picasso Museum before closing diminishing with every bite. Unless you're travelling specifically for this kind of experience, don't commit to multicourse extravaganzas — lots of fine-dining establishments will do truncated lunch menus, or indeed let you go à la carte. Or just take the pressure off and opt for low-key: Bar Cañete (small plates from £7; barcanete.com) is my go-to in the city.

My top two pizzas have been outside Italy. One in the middle of the desert at Pizzeria Bianco (pizzeriabianco.com) in Arizona; one in the middle of the ocean at Soneva Fushi, Maldives (soneva.com). The former was worth the long line (go early!) for the crisp base and homemade cheese and salami that earned its owner, Chris Bianco, an episode of Netflix's Chef's Table nearly 20 years after my visit. The latter was delivered to our villa and chowed down in bathrobes as a tropical storm whipped outside.

Mixologists are increasingly focusing on local ingredients and elevating their bar snacks; the results can provide a great snapshot of a destination's wider culinary outlook. In Ho Chi Minh City's Ton That Dam wet market, seek out Nhau Nhau (anansaigon.com), a playful libation station that puts Vietnamese beer, Hue saké and new-wave banh mi front and centre. Plus, bartenders love to chat — grill them on where they grab dinner after a shift.

This is a divisive one. We've all heard the stories about people's holidays being ruined by food poisoning after eating street food. It's easy to put such misfortune down to bad hygiene, and of course sometimes this is the case, but it's also to do with the different microbes prevalent in different countries that our bodies are simply not used to. As someone with Crohn's disease, I am particularly mindful of knocking things off kilter, but I can safely say that I've never felt the ill-effects of street food. Indeed, some of my best meals abroad have been streetside: the hazy backdrop of smoke as we devoured one charred satay stick after another in Singapore comes to mind. It's a matter of your personal appetite for risk. That said, if you are advised not to drink the water, don't. Look for where the locals are eating; busy stalls mean that the food won't be sitting around too long.

SANGRIA by the pool, long siestas and balmy evenings eating mouthwatering paella – I had long dreamed of swapping grey British skies for the good life in Spain. So in the summer of 2023, I decided to make my fantasy a reality along with my husband, James, 41, a businessman, and, after a year renting in San Sebastian, I finally bought a property on Spain's Costa Brava in July 2024. 6 6 6 While it seemed like a great idea at the time, I quickly discovered the process would be anything but simple. For starters, the admin is utterly relentless and I soon became bogged down by residency paperwork – the nightmare of trying to open a Spanish bank account, confusion over healthcare and administrative appointments. For the first six months, it became a full-time job, but it was essential to begin my new life in Spain. Moving to Spain is not easy post-Brexit. Visas are required for full time living. Fortunately, James has an EU passport which allowed me to secure residency via the family reunification visa. Despite the endless red tape, the perks of Spanish living are hard to ignore. Day-to-day costs in Spain are up to 50 per cent lower than in the UK. A bottle of decent red wine is only £6, a three-course meal can be as little as £10, a cinema ticket is £5 and some gym memberships charge only £12 per month. Every year, thousands of Brits leave the UK for Spain's sunny shores, lured by warmer weather, a slower pace of life and comparatively lower property prices. Currently, there are 275,000 UK nationals living there lawfully. Although houses inland can still be bought for as little as €50,000, prices are set to increase by 7.3 per cent by the end 2025, followed by a 5.3 per cent rise in 2026. To afford the perfect location, I bought a three-bedroom renovation project for €320,000, located in a beautiful pine forest, a short distance from a picturesque village and the beach - complete with lurid 1970s bathroom, cracked tiles, cobweb-covered artex walls and a leaking roof. The kitchen was too small for an oven and washing machine, the swimming pool was essentially a pond and the garden a mosquito-infested jungle. My septic tank remains the great unsolved mystery of the house. It's not on any plans, no one knows where it is and at this point, I'm racing against time before it announces itself in a much messier way. I quit my job and did a complete 180 moving to Spain - beer is just $3 a pint and my life is so much better As if the renovation challenges weren't daunting enough, one of the biggest shocks was the buying process. Timeframes and legalities in Spain are considerably different to the UK. A 10 per cent deposit is required, plus a 10 per cent transfer tax, essentially Spain's version of stamp duty. The tax is paid to the local government. The purchase was set to complete in eight weeks, but the process was delayed due to missing paperwork and complex admin. I got the keys in October, but didn't legally own the property until December. For two months, I lived rent and mortgage-free, feeling like a squatter with fancy candles in my own home. I'm not alone in my buying experience. Irene Milsome, 70, a retired Brit from Milton Keynes, who moved to Alicante in 2020 with her husband for better weather, faced a distressing three-year ordeal to purchase her property. 6 She says: 'Our land and the house structure were impounded by the Spanish treasury department because a dishonest builder left the project incomplete. 'We then had to fight and pay for the land ourselves from the treasury and then finish the house build with a different builder and at a further cost. 'We were angry that this was allowed to happen, even with safeguards in place in the building contract. We felt helpless in a different country.' Irene advises people to buy a completed – or near-completion – new build from a reputable English-speaking estate agent only. Last October, as I pushed open the door to my new home, I was greeted with the previous owners' past life – piles of dusty, colourful furniture. Despite the house only having three bedrooms, I removed 14 beds, 45 chairs, five dining tables, 30 pairs of curtains and a variety of creepy animal skeletons - rodents, geckos and a cat. Quite often, Spanish houses are sold furnished. However, former civil servant, Janice Carter, 60, who moved to Alicante from London, got the surprise of her life when she walked into a decaying home. 'The house needed more work than we realised,' she says. 'The sellers gave us the impression they were living there, but they weren't. 'It was damp and the plaster just fell off the walls.' Janice had been sold by the beautiful, pristine swimming pool in the seller's listing. 'But the swimming pool was thick green algae and unusable,' she says. 'They'd sent us an old photo saying: 'You'll be swimming here this time next week'. 'We'd also purchased some items of furniture from them to see us through until our belongings arrived, but when we got there, nothing was left – only their cat.' 6 When renovating in Spain, everything moves in slow motion. My architect disappeared for so long, I feared he might be dead. The builder said he was popping to the Spanish equivalent of B&Q, only to return three days later. After hiring my sixth architect in a year, I've learned to embrace Spain's slow pace. One quote was so overpriced, it would have been cheaper to become an architect myself. Building materials and furnishings can cost almost double what they do in the UK, too. While the wine and bottled water might be cheaper, don't expect the same bargain prices when it comes to housing supplies. Those tiles? Twice the price. That tap? Might as well be gold-plated. Building quotes have no limits, either. It's not uncommon for builders to add a few extra zeros onto the price when they discover you're an expat. Surprisingly, it is mostly British or foreign builders working in Spain who are the culprits. Most Spanish local authorities have strict building regulations. It's often a difficult and lengthy process to obtain permissions for builds and extensions. For example, I have a strict exterior colour palette to choose from of bold pinks, yellows and oranges, in-keeping with the historic village, and my perimeter fence can't be higher than 1.2 metres and must include an element of transparency. We'd also purchased furniture from them to see us through until our belongings arrived, but when we got there, nothing was left — only their cat. Janice Carter, 60Moved to Alicante from London Finally, don't skip insulation. As Brits, we tend to think of Spain as having year-round warmth, but temperatures can drop below freezing in winter, even in the south. Spanish houses are built to stay cool, so in winter I could see my breath in the air as I snuggled on the sofa, under multiple layers and cuddling the dog for extra warmth – with a bucket collecting dripping rainwater next to me. Now, double glazing, efficient heating and insulation is top of my priority list. While life under the Spanish sun brings undeniable joy, from long lunches to laid-back living, anyone considering moving should be aware that this slower pace seeps into other areas – including property purchases and renovations. Learning to let go, slow down and trust the process (and the tradesmen) has become part of the adventure. Building in Spain may test your patience, and punish your bank balance, but the payoff is well worth it.

German aviation giant Lufthansa Group is poised to gradually reinstate flights to Tel Aviv from 1 August, aiming for a full programme by the end of October. The airline, like others, had halted services due to a renewed flare-up in regional violence. A spokesperson confirmed the decision on Friday, stating: "We are always monitoring the situation, and it now looks like we will be able to fly again from August." By mid-August, Lufthansa, freight carrier Lufthansa Cargo, and Austrian Airlines will operate 44 weekly connections. Brussels Airlines resumes on 13 August, Swiss International Airlines on 29 September, ITA Airways on 1 September, and Eurowings on 26 October. Flights to Tehran will, however, remain suspended. In addition to the announcement from Lufthansa Group, a spokesperson for Brussels Airlines said: 'Following a thorough security assessment, Lufthansa Group airlines will resume flights to Tel Aviv from 1 August. Safety remains our highest priority. 'We continue to closely monitor the situation in the region and may adjust our flight schedule if necessary.' Several airlines around the globe, including British Airways and Ryanair, suspended flights to Tel Aviv following a missile strike near Israel's Ben Gurion airport on 4 May. Flights were halted to and from Tel Aviv after a missile fired by Yemen's Houthis landed near Ben Gurion Airport, sending a cloud of smoke into the air and panicking passengers. Many airliners have continued to pause flights to Tel Aviv, yet Wizz Air has announced plans to resume flights on 8 August. Competitor Ryanair has said it will not return to Israel until 25 October at the earliest, and British carrier easyJet will not return to the region until March next year. "Operations are totally safe and secured right now. The situation can change, and it has changed a few times before, but we have a very robust system to monitor this from a safety and security perspective," Varadi said in an interview. He acknowledged that European carriers were cautious about their return and that Wizz Air's presence in Israel would be "larger than all European airlines combined."

BERLIN, July 25 (Reuters) - Lufthansa Group ( opens new tab will gradually relaunch flights to Tel Aviv from August 1, returning to a full flight programme by the end of October, a spokesperson for the German company said on Friday. Lufthansa is one of a number of global airlines that halted flights to and from the Israeli city after a renewed flare-up in violence in the region. "We are always monitoring the situation, and it now looks like we will be able to fly again from August," the spokesperson said. Lufthansa, freight airline Lufthansa Cargo and Austrian Airlines will operate a total of 44 weekly connections by mid-August, the spokesperson said. Brussels Airlines will resume flights on August 13, while Swiss International Airlines will follow suit on September 29. ITA Airways and Eurowings will resume flights to Tel Aviv on September 1 and October 26, respectively. Flights to Tehran will remain suspended, the spokesperson added.
