KPJ earnings outlook likely to remain resilient

PETALING JAYA: Maybank Investment Bank (IB) Research expects KPJ Healthcare Bhd 's earnings outlook to remain resilient, underpinned by expected volume recovery in the second half of the year, rising case complexity and cost optimisation efforts.
It added that the further delay in the diagnosis-related group (DRG) system is positive as it leaves earnings potential uncapped for the near-term.
Last year, the Health Ministry said it was considering implementing a DRG system to help manage rising healthcare costs, particularly in private hospitals.
The research house viewed KPJ's asset monetisation and lease renewal exercise as a strategic effort to unlock capital and support its 6,000-bed target by 2030.
KPJ recently launched a 60-bed hospital in Kuala Selangor as part of its organic expansion, supporting progress towards its 6,000-bed financial year 2030 (FY30) target.
'Alongside five other hospitals under gestation (four are earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation or ebitda positive), this could pose near-term earnings upside,' it said.
On July 8, KPJ said it had fulfilled all conditions precedent of the sale and purchase agreements related to its proposed sale and leaseback, as well as lease renewal.
The sales and leaseback agreement for the new wings of KPJ Ampang Puteri and KPJ Penang for RM241mil cash.
Maybank IB Research said KPJ has historically injected assets into its 34%-owned associate Al-Aqar Healthcare REIT to unlock asset value while retaining operational control via leasebacks.
It said apart from the injection of these new hospital wings, the resolution also includes lease renewals on existing leaseback properties with Al-Aqar for KPJ Penang, KPJ Seremban, Taiping Medical Centre, KPJ Healthcare University and KPJ Healthcare College Penang,
The research house maintained its FY25 to FY27 ebitda margin forecast of 24% as it leaves earnings estimates unchanged on potential impact of 8% sales and service tax (SST) on leases, pending clarity on possible business-to-business exemption.
It has, however, trimmed FY25 to FY27 earnings by 2%, 4% and 4%, respectively.
The research house is 'neutral' on the SST expansion of 6% on foreign patients, and 8% on leased assets. 'For the latter, we believe there is a possibility for KPJ to be eligible for exemptions,' it said.

PETALING JAYA: Growth numbers for the consumer sector could moderate in the second half of 2025, especially for retailers, following a strong start to the year with the Hari Raya celebrations. This was despite the sector providing a defensive shelter amidst the uncertain global macroeconomic outlook, thanks to the domestic-centric earnings base and resilient consumption on stable employment and continuous financial support. In a report, RHB Research said the prospects of subdued consumer sentiment and rising operating expenditure (opex) will cap earnings growth. 'Therefore, we strategically advocate for the liquid large-cap retailers with better earnings visibility, backed by superior operational scale and efficiency. We maintain a 'neutral' call,' RHB Research said. It added that moving past the immediate term, it foresees consumer sentiment staying soft, impacted by elevated inflationary pressures as well as uncertain economic and income outlooks stemming from global trade tensions. 'As such, inflation-weary consumers will continue to spend selectively, prioritising essential purchases and bargain-hunting for value, hence capping discretionary spending,' it noted. RHB Research said it prefers defensive and liquid large-cap names like MR DIY Group (M) Bhd and 99 Speed Mart Retail Holdings Bhd for their ability to capture consumer spending and reasonable valuations versus consumer staple peers. The research house also likes Farm Fresh Bhd for its ambitious drive to penetrate more segments in the dairy industry and favours Guan Chong Bhd for its stellar earnings outlook, supported by forward sales at elevated combined ratios and normalised production volumes. 'We also highlight Focus Point Holdings Bhd 's undemanding valuation, notwithstanding the robust optical sales momentum on the back of the rising myopic population and proactive marketing drive.' On the sales and service (SST) tax, RHB Research said it does not reckon companies will be able to pass on the additional costs considering the demand elasticity and anti-profiteering regulation in place. With that, it opined that margin trends could turn subdued, particularly for retailers like Aeon Co (M) Bhd, Padini Holdings Bhd , Mynews Holdings Bhd and Focus Point, unless there are significant efficiency gains to offset the impact. 'On the other hand, things are turning more favourable for food manufacturers like Nestle Malaysia Bhd , Farm Fresh and Power Root Bhd as easing commodity prices and strengthening of the ringgit should translate to a promising margin outlook.' Risks include a major slowdown in economic growth and a sharp surge of commodity prices. 'We believe they can better mitigate opex inflation owing to their dominant market share, massive scale of operations, and established brand equity,' it said.

PETALING JAYA: Amid cooling export momentum following a front-loading phase, Malaysia's economy is navigating a more fragile recovery, weighed down by persistent global trade uncertainties and an uneven domestic rebound, analysts say. In June, the country's exports declined further by 3.5% year-on-year (y-o-y), missing a Bloomberg consensus' forecast of a 5.4% gain. This marked the second consecutive month of disappointing growth, further affirming the ebbing of front-loading activities, analysts said. Likewise, imports softened to low single-digit growth of 1.2%. The country's trade surplus grew to RM8.6bil in June. The near-term export outlook for Malaysia remains clouded by ongoing uncertainty over global trade and tariff policies, geopolitical risks and evolving domestic policy reforms. 'US President Donald Trump's tariff announcements over the past two weeks, from July 1, with an extended deadline to Aug 1 for further negotiations, has cast a shadow over Malaysia's export outlook for the remainder of this year and into 2026 as Malaysia is facing a higher US reciprocal tariff of 25% versus 24% announced on April 2. 'It is also significantly higher than the tariffs slapped on other regional peers such as Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines,' United Overseas Bank (M) Bhd (UOB) said in a economics and markets research report yesterday. Additionally, UOB said the Trump administration's artificial intelligence-related restrictions and sector-specific tariffs remain unclear and fluid as of now. 'These risks are real and growing, which will be disruptive to supply chains, investment flows and export competitiveness,' the bank added. On the domestic front, policy changes such as the expanded sales and service tax (SST), new electricity tariff structure, the mandatory 2% Employees Provident Fund contributions for foreign workers, and eInvoicing, are adding pressures to Malaysian businesses, including exporters. In response, business leaders have urged the government to ease the burden by cutting SST rates and reconsidering the fuel subsidy rationalisation programme. Similarly, Hong Leong Investment Bank Research (HLIB Research) is maintaining a cautious view for the second half of this year (2H25) due to ongoing tariff risks, plus concerns over sector specific tariffs on semiconductors. The research house is keeping its gross domestic product (GDP) growth forecast for this year at 4%. Pending clarity on US-Malaysia tariff negotiations, CIMB Research retained its full-year GDP forecast at 4.3% for this year, noting that the local economy expanded by 4.4% in 1H25, down from 5% in 1H24, reflecting a balanced but cautious growth trajectory. However, should existing US tariffs of 25% remain in place beyond the Aug 1 deadline, the research house estimates GDP growth could ease further to around 4%. It noted that front-loading in the United States, Taiwan and South Korea moderated, while shipments to China, the European Union and Asean had weakened amid the tariff uncertainty.
