Pratyusha Banerjee Had Not Left Balika Vadhu On A Good Note: 'There Were Differences'

Pratyusha Banerjee was found dead on April 1, 2016. Since then, her former boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh has been making several allegations.
Pratyusha Banerjee rose to fame after she played the role of Anandi in the popular show Balika Vadhu. However, she left the show in March 2013. The actress then passed away in 2016, allegedly by suicide and ever since, her former boyfriend Rahul Raj Singh has made several allegations.
Now, Singh has claimed Pratyusha had not left Balika Vadhu on a good note. In a recent interview, the late actress' ex-boyfriend argued that Pratyusha quit Balika Vadhu due to 'creative differences" with the makers. Not just this, he also accused the makers of the popular show of non-payment.
'She hadn't left Balika Vadhu on a good note either. So obviously, production houses won't call you back. She told me there were creative differences with the team, too much interference from her side, they said. And then there was a payment issue with DJs. Her payment had been stuck for six months, so maybe that led to more problems. These things happen in production. Plus, her expenses were so high, her father's and mother's too, that she could never really stop working. Like we discussed earlier, they had loans to repay, so she had to keep earning. But when payments didn't come on time, she would get frustrated, and relationships in the industry would spoil. She'd call again and again, asking for her money," Singh told Bollywood Bubble.
Pratyusha Banerjee died on April 1, 2016, allegedly by suicide. Following her death, her parents filed a complaint against Rahul Singh. He was booked under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 306 (abetment of suicide), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt).
In 2023, a sessions court in Mumbai rejected Singh's discharge plea. In the plea, he claimed that he was falsely implicated in the case on account of 'personal vendetta". However, the court mentioned that prima facie it was clear that 'physical, emotional and financial harassment and exploitation" by Rahul landed the Balika Vadhu actress in depression.

Unsafe UP school transport: 913 vehicles seized, ₹88.5 lakh in fines realised

In a push to ensure the safety of school-going children, the Uttar Pradesh Transport Department has seized 913 school vehicles and collected ₹88.52 lakh in penalties following a massive statewide enforcement drive, a government spokesman said here on Wednesday. For representation only (HT File Photo) 'Conducted between July 1 and July 15, the operation inspected 46,748 of the 67,613 registered school vehicles—roughly 69%—across the state,' he added. The inspection revealed that 4,089 vehicles (8.75%) violated safety norms, with 1,768 found operating despite expired fitness certificates. In all, 4,438 challans were issued as part of the crackdown. Transport commissioner Brajesh Narain Singh has issued strict directives to all districts and school managements, warning of 'zero tolerance' for any negligence in school vehicle operations. He emphasised that any failure to comply with safety standards would attract severe legal, criminal, and administrative consequences, including the cancellation of school recognition in case of repeated violations. While districts such as Prayagraj, Farrukhabad, Lucknow, and Kanpur Nagar performed well in enforcement, serious lapses were noted in Mau, Maharajganj, Deoria, Hapur, and Siddharthnagar. Key violations uncovered during the drive included, operation of vehicles with expired fitness certificates, use of privately registered vehicles (Maruti vans, taxis, autos) without valid permits, absence of mandatory safety gear such as GPS, CCTV, fire extinguishers, and first-aid kits and lack of police verification, training, and medical check-ups of drivers and attendants, denial of affiliation by schools despite private vehicles operating from their premises. The transport commissioner, as chairman of the State Transport Authority, has invoked powers under Section 68(4) of the Motor Vehicles Act, directing Regional Transport Authorities (RTAs) to seize unpermitted private vehicles and prohibit the use of unfit ones. District magistrates have been asked to initiate derecognition proceedings against erring schools and activate regular meetings of District School Vehicle Transport Safety Committees. RTAs and ARTOs have been instructed to carry out regular inspections and ensure strict compliance, including police verification of all drivers and attendants. School principals and managements of institutions have been reminded of their legal responsibility for every vehicle operating from their campuses and directed to form mandatory School Transport Safety Committees. Reaffirming the department's stance, transport commissioner Singh said, 'There will be zero tolerance for negligence or violation in the operation of school vehicles. The safety of children is our absolute priority. Stringent legal actions will be taken against those violating the rules.'

‘Bail can't be withheld as punishment': High Court grants relief to NewsClick founder

The right to personal liberty is 'not a casual right which can be tampered with without serious considerations', the Delhi High Court said on Wednesday as it granted anticipatory bail to NewsClick founder and editor-in-chief Prabir Purkayastha in two cases. The bench of Justice Neena Bansal Krishna granted protection from arrest to Purkayastha in the two cases from 2020 — a money laundering case by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed in September 2020, and another case registered by the Delhi Police's Economic Offences Wing (EOW), alleging violation of the Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) norms by NewsClick, in August 2020. Emphasising that 'bail cannot be withheld as a punishment', Justice Krishna referred to the jurisprudence laid down by the Supreme Court. 'Personal liberty is a precious Constitutional value and cannot be tampered with casually. The objective behind depriving an individual of his personal liberty must be founded on serious considerations. An accused, as a presumed innocent person, is entitled to present his case and establish his innocence,' the order underlined. While granting anticipatory bail in the EOW case, the court took into account that the probe in the case is still ongoing even as the offence was lodged in 2020. The HC also considered that Purkayastha had joined the probe whenever he was summoned and that the nature of evidence in the case is documentary in nature, leaving little likelihood of tampering of evidence. It also reasoned that he is 75, and there is little likelihood of him absconding. In the ED case, the High Court took into account that the probe in the predicate offence registered by the EOW remains pending till date and that there is also nothing on record to suggest that he had been called since 2023 ever to join the investigation. The HC also granted anticipatory bail to NewsClick editor Pranjal Pandey, booked in the EOW case, on similar grounds as Purkayastha. On August 26, 2020, an FIR was filed by the EOW under IPC sections 406 (punishment for criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), and 120B (punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). As per the allegations in the FIR, foreign direct investment was received by PPK NewsClick Studio Private Limited, which owns the digital portal, from Worldwide Media Holdings LLC, US, during 2018-19, in violation of the FDI norms and other laws of the country. Based on the FIR, the ED initiated its probe in September 2021. Notably Purkayastha or Pandey were named in the EOW FIR. The two had moved the High Court for anticipatory bail after they apprehended arrest following CRPC section 41 (where police may arrest without warrant) notices issued to them in June 2021. In February 2021, separate ED teams had launched search operations at the portal's office at Saidulajab in South Delhi and at the homes of Purkayastha and Pande. In July 2021, the HC granted Purkayastha interim protection from arrest.

Matthew Perry's Doctor Pleads Guilty To Supplying Ketamine To 'Friends' Star

During a hearing in Los Angeles, the doctor admitted to supplying four counts of illegal distribution of the drug, which is used as a prescription anaesthetic. Late actor Matthew Perry's doctor Salvador Plasencia on Wednesday pleaded guilty to giving 'Friends' star ketamine before his tragic death. During a hearing in Los Angeles, the doctor admitted to supplying four counts of illegal distribution of the drug, which is used as a prescription anaesthetic. Salvador Plasencia will face a statutory maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison for each count at his sentencing hearing, which is scheduled for December 3, the US Attorney's Office of the Central District of California said in a press statement, as per CNN. He has also been directed to surrender his medical license within the next 30-45 days, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Plasencia took a plea deal in June in which he admitted to distributing ketamine without a legitimate medical purpose to the 'Friends' star, who died of an overdose in October 2023. In exchange, prosecutors dropped charges of falsifying medical records and additional counts of distribution, Variety reported. The lone remaining defendant in the case, Jasveen Sangha, nicknamed the 'Ketamine Queen," is scheduled to face a trial next month. She is alleged to have maintained a stash house in North Hollywood for the illicit distribution of the drug. Plasencia faces a theoretical maximum of 40 years behind bars, but is likely to receive far less than that under federal sentencing guidelines.
