Madiba strokes in aid of feral cats
One of the more unique initiatives on Madiba Day on Friday saw Ushaka Aquatics proudly host the inaugural Mandela Day 67-minute Fundraiser Swim Challenge in aid of Project Feral Cat.
Participating swimmers were asked to secure sponsors for each 25m lap completed, with all funds and food raised donated to the project.
Ushaka swimmers, along with several other community entrants, completed an impressive total of 1 406 laps at the Brackenham municipal pool.

Ushaka swimmer Handre van Schoor, a junior national swimmer, completed an impressive 186 laps, with female swimmer Dominic de Jager completing 130 laps in their 67 minutes.
Hiranya Moodley from Ushaka secured the highest sponsorship.
'Ushaka is grateful to all swimmers, supporters and sponsors, and hopes to next year grow the event and secure even further support for Project Feral Cat,' said event organiser Shirley Davidson.

Ntongande High School champions spring SA netball surprise
Working their way up through the stages, Ntongande High School climbed to the top, winning the U16 South African Schools Netball National Championship. The first-time entrants embarked on their journey by playing at zonal level in Richards Bay, winning all three games against Siphumelele, Mkhayideni and Lizwi high schools. They went on to play at district level against Mkhayideni, Welabasha, Khombindlela and Dlamvuzo High, where they obtained position one by winning all their games. They then proceeded to represent King Cetshwayo District at provincial level, playing against Slethukukhanya and Isambulo, again winning both games, allowing them to represent KZN at national level. Here, 19 schools from across South Africa competed, with Ntongande High victorious in all their matches, earning them the 2025 U16 National Champions title. 'It was a very hard journey as we are a no-fee school. We tried various sponsors without success, but with the aid of the school governing body, the learners were able to take part,' said teacher HJ Mpotshane. He thanked the Dreamfields organisation which provided netball kit and shoes for all the players as they usually play barefoot. 'We would also like to acknowledge the Helpmekaar netball team which provided shoes and hampers. The school has many talented learners but faces a lot of issues when it comes to participating in sporting events due to limited finance and resources,' said Mpotshane. Don't have the ZO app? Mandela Day Boxing Championship brings thrilling action to KaNyamazane
Fitness, skill and grit were put to the test at the highly anticipated Mandela Day Boxing Championship, held at Chafzar Lifestyle on Saturday, July 26. The event, hosted by the Mpumalanga Boxing Organisation in partnership with the Department of Culture, Sports and Recreation, formed part of Mandela Day commemorations and drew a spirited crowd despite the rainy weather. In the heavyweight division, Zuzumusa Mthethwa of Daantjie Boxing Club secured a third-round victory over Roath Philip of Mbombela Boxing Club. The bout was evenly matched in the first round, intensified in the second, and was ultimately decided in a high-energy third round, with both fighters giving it their all. In another match, Kgaogelo Tshehla of Nkangala Boxing Club showcased a strategic and disciplined approach against Justice Shongwe of Matsulu Boxing Club. Tshehla dominated from the outset with precise punches, leaving Shongwe struggling to recover. Despite a resilient final round from Shongwe, time ran out before he could turn the tide. Vasco Ngomane of Komati Boxing Club delivered a powerful performance to claim victory over Zakhele Mabena of Nkangala Boxing Club. He credited the win as a key milestone in his career, reinforcing his reputation as one of Komati's strongest fighters. The clash between Ernest Tshela (Nkangala) and Solomuzi Shabella (Daantjie) ended in a decisive win for Shabella. He came out aggressively from the first round, landing several blows to Tshela's face and midsection. The rain-slicked surface added to the challenge, and by the third round, Tshela was reeling under pressure, nearly slipping out of the ring. In the final bout, Trevor Leshaba (Nkangala) Boxing Club defeated Dylan Roets of Highlands Boxing Club in a closely watched contest. ALSO READ: Community members cherish Madiba Day in Ngodwana The first two rounds were cautious, with minimal contact and plenty of holding and clinching, prompting frequent referee intervention. But in the third round, Leshaba found his rhythm, landing powerful punches to Roets' face that proved decisive. The event drew enthusiastic spectators who engaged in animated post-fight analysis. The championship proved to be a thrilling showcase of young boxing talent, with passion, power and perseverance on full display.

Mammoth MTN8 task today for Richards Bay FC
NRB fans will have their eyes glued to their TV screens today as the Rich Boyz take on the mighty Mamelodi Sundowns in an MTN8 quarter final at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville, Pretoria, at 6pm. Only the biggest optimists – and fanatical NRB supporters – give Richards Bay any chance of winning; but cup games are made for upsets and this might be another one of those. The encounter will be screened live on SuperSport channel 202. Meanwhile, Richards Bay have announced a venue change for their opening 2025/26 Betway Premiership fixture against Marumo Gallants on Saturday, 9 August. Five tough KZN Premier's Cup games contested over two rain-sodden days last weekend did significant damage to the uMhlathuze Stadium playing surface, necessitating a change of venue to allow sufficient time for remedial action to be completed. Due to have been the Rich Boyz' triumphant return to the newly revamped uMhlathuze Stadium after it was condemned by the PSL in September 2021, the decision has been taken to shift the game to the King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi – where the NRB side has played its home fixtures over the past four seasons.
