A Famous Sandwich Shop From Florence Opens This Weekend in Los Angeles

Eater16 hours ago
A taste of Florence lands in Los Angeles this week. Florentine sandwich shop Pino's Sandwiches Salumeria Verdi opens its first U.S. location in Los Feliz on August 23 in the former home of Eastside Deli, bringing a new destination for crusty, schiacciata sandwiches, layered with meats and cheeses, to the neighborhood. This is the first expansion for Pino's, which currently only operates the original Florence location.
Pino's Sandwiches dates back to 1965, when it originally opened as Salumeria Verdi in the Santa Croce neighborhood of Florence. In 1991, Pino, who only uses his first name professionally, and his wife Antonella took over the salumeria (the Italian word for delicatessen). At first, he kept the simple salumeria offerings the same, but quickly realized locals and students studying at universities were looking for a quick, affordable option for sandwiches or pasta during the day.

The first sandwich Pino developed, called the Best, comes with roast beef, mixed vegetables, cheese, and a spicy sauce on schiacciata; after toppings are added, the sandwich is toasted in a panini press until the cheese is melted and the crust of the bread is crispy. 'I call it the best because, for me, I think maybe people want to eat a fast lunch in one sandwich,' he says. Slowly, The Best began to evolve with customer preferences, who would substitute the roast beef with turkey or prosciutto. Today, Pino's in Florence offers more than 30 sandwiches, plus daily blackboard specials, and the business remains in the family with Pino and Antonella's daughter Martina joining them.
With the opening in Los Angeles, Pino hopes to capture the same magic of the Florence location. Expanding to the U.S. has been on his mind for years — plenty of international customers have asked them to open in their cities, yet it wasn't until a more recent trip that things began to come together. At first, he looked at locations closer to the ocean but couldn't find something with a price that worked until he looked in Los Feliz.
When Pino's opens, it will offer a slimmed-down version of the Florence menu, with 14 savory sandwiches and one sweet (slathered with Nutella, of course). The menu comprises options like the simple Delicato with smoked ham, brie cheese, and truffle cream; the Tuscan with salami, fontina cheese, fresh tomatoes, and pesto or garlic sauce; and the Springtime filled with prosciutto, mozzarella cheese, fresh tomatoes, lettuce, and pesto or garlic sauce. The Best, available with the original roast beef, made the menu, alongside Los Feliz exclusives like the Ganzo with prosciutto, creamy stracciatella cheese, sundried tomatoes, and a caramelized onion spread. Vegetarian options include a Caprese; the Vegan with spinach, roasted eggplant, sundried tomatoes, onions, and hot sauce or garlic sauce; and the Lady D with spinach, stracciatella cheese, roasted eggplant, sundried tomatoes, roasted bell peppers, and pesto or garlic sauce. Similar to the Florence location, Los Feliz's Pino's offers a sweet schiacciata sandwich with Nutella. Staying true to the affordable roots of the shop in Florence, all of the sandwiches at Pino's are priced under $20 and come with two oversized halves that are each comparable to the size of a regular sandwich. An option for gluten-free bread will be available after the opening.

For Pino, his sandwiches stand apart from the rest because of the ingredients he uses and the balance of flavors. The dimpled schiacciata — which comes from the Italian word schiacciare, meaning to press — will be baked fresh every day at Pino's in Los Feliz using the same recipe as in Florence. Eighty to 90 percent of the ingredients at the shop will be imported from Italy to maintain consistent quality across both shops. During the opening process, Pino tried stateside versions of cured meats and cheeses, but they just couldn't compare to what he knew from back home. 'My palate has the original taste of prosciutto, salami, and Italian cheese,' he says. 'When you try the original and you try the other, you understand — you know which one's better.' Although Pino and his family won't be at the Los Feliz shop day-to-day, they've trained staff on every minute detail of the process, from how long it should sit in the press to how many dried tomatoes should dot the stracciatella.
After more than 30 years of operating Pino's, and days out from opening in Los Angeles, Pino is still looking toward the future. 'For me, it's a big step,' he says of the opening. 'Biggest step of my life.' And although he is focused on the Los Feliz location until he heads back to Florence, Pino is leaving the door open for further expansion into the U.S. — if all goes well.
Pino's Sandwiches opens on August 23 at 1761 N. Vermont Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90027. It will hold hours from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.

Best's Market Segment Report: A Two-Way Street for Reinsurance Diversification in Asia

HONG KONG--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Asia's reinsurers are actively expanding to mature overseas markets as part of a move to diversity and be more agile with underwriting cycle management, according to a new report from AM Best. The Best's Market Segment Report, 'Asia in Focus: A Two-Way Street for Reinsurance Diversification,' is part of AM Best's overall look at the global reinsurance industry ahead of the Rendez-Vous de Septembre in Monte Carlo. Other reinsurance-related reports, including AM Best's ranking of top global reinsurance groups and in-depth looks at the insurance-linked securities, Lloyd's, life/annuity, health and regional reinsurance markets, will be available during August and September. AM Best views the move to diversity as credit positive. The report also notes that the majority of reinsurers within AM Best's Asia Reinsurance Composite posted higher levels of net income in 2024, with China's reinsurers experiencing the most notable gains. Over the past decade, the major European reinsurers have identified the Asia-Pacific region as a key source for diversification and growth. 'Asia-Pacific reinsurers are following a similar strategy, significantly expanding abroad,' said Christie Lee, senior director, AM Best. 'With economic momentum slowing in China, and mature markets like Japan and South Korea facing demographic and economic headwinds, North Asian major reinsurers have increasingly turned to international markets to sustain growth and diversify risk.' Among some of the report's other highlights: The composite's weighted average return on equity ratio improved to 11.3% for 2024, supported by stronger underwriting results and higher investment income, thus extending the improving trend from 2023. Reinsurers based in Singapore and throughout South/Southeast Asia reported strong earnings for 2024 that were broadly flat year-on-year, but still near historic highs. Reinsurance capacity rebuilds occurred amid pricing adequacy, leading to increased competition and treaty oversubscription. In Japan, April renewal revenue was reduced owing to increased retention and rate reductions; this may further fuel Asia-Pacific 2026 January renewal softening. Lastly, AM Best will host its annual reinsurance market briefing at Rendez-Vous de Septembre on 7 September 2025, at 10:15 a.m. (CEST) in Monte Carlo. For more information, please visit

Today is your last chance to grab a PS5 before Sony's price hikes go into effect

Sony announced a $50 price increase on all PlayStation 5 'slim' models in the US starting tomorrow, August 21st. The upcoming prices for a PS5 Digital Edition, the standard PS5, and the PS5 Pro are $499.99, $549.99, and $749.99, respectively; however, you can avoid paying the higher prices by picking up a PS5 at Amazon, Best Buy, Target, and Walmart today. The disc-based PS5 is already sold out at Amazon, and your options may get even more limited the longer you wait. As of right now, you can get the PS5 Digital Edition for around $449 at Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target, while the standard PS5 can be had for around $499 at Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. You can also pick up the newer PS5 Pro for around $699 at Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and Target. All three PS5 consoles can play the same library of games, but have slight differences. The PS5 Digital Edition features rearranged port selection and lacks a built-in disc drive, which means it can only play digital games downloaded from the PlayStation Store. (Sony sells an optional external drive you can add after the fact for $79.99 if you'd like to play physical games or Blu-rays.) The standard, disc-based PS5 features the same tech specs, but with an internal disc drive. The PS5 Pro, meanwhile, has a better GPU, faster memory, improved ray tracing, support for Wi-Fi 7, and AI-powered upscaling. It lacks an internal disc drive, but it's compatible with the external disc drive developed for the original PS5. It also comes with 2TB of internal storage instead of the 1TB SSD found in the non-Pro models, so you have additional space for stowing digital games. The beefed-up system doesn't have exclusive titles, but select PS5 titles have received updates to look better. Sony's price hike comes less than a month after Nintendo introduced a similar $30 increase on the original Nintendo Switch models. Nintendo also recently raised the prices of certain Nintendo Switch 2 accessories, but Sony says 'the recommended retail prices for PS5 accessories remain unchanged.' The price adjustments from both companies are attributable to tariffs on international goods, which were first announced in April and have continued to change in response to President Donald Trump's on-again-of-again policy.
