San Francisco Unicorns became the first team to advance to the playoffs of the MLC 2025, beating Seattle Orcas by 32 runs in Dallas on Wednesday night. They remain unbeaten in this competition, having won all six matches so far and also strengthened their position at the top of the points table.
Orcas suffered their fifth straight defeat this season and continue to sit at the bottom.
Captain
Matthew Short
and Romario Shepherd's all-round heroics along with Haris Rauf's four-wicket haul were the highlights for Unicorns on a day when they had to win mini-battles.
Asked to bat first, Unicorns lost Finn Allen in the second over. But Jake Fraser-McGurk and Short put on a 68-run second-wicket stand that not only steadied the innings but also provided them momentum.
McGurk fell for a well-made 21-ball 34 in the eighth over to left-arm spinner Harmeet Singh and this triggered a collapse as Unicorns slipped from 86 for 1 to 103 for 6. Short, who smashed seven fours and two sixes in his 29-ball stay, departed for 52 when Harmeet dismissed him and Hassan Khan in the same over.

Shepherd then blasted four sixes and four fours in his 56 off 31 balls, lifting Unicorns to a competitive 176 for 8. Gerald Coetzee also chipped in with 3 for 34, including key middle-order wickets.
However, this late onslaught proved more than enough with the Orcas once again denied a maiden win despite a bright start to the chase.
Orcas picked up 29 runs in the first two overs, thanks to Shayan Jahangir, who looked impressive throughout his knock. He played a range of eye-catching shots to score 40 off just 22 balls. However, Shepherd provided the breakthrough by dismissing Jahangir in the seventh over.
In the following over, Short struck twice, removing both David Warner and Kyle Mayers. Orcas never recovered from these early setbacks and continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. Shimron Hetmyer and Sujit Nayak attempted to rebuild the innings, but only briefly. Rauf, who had earlier dismissed Heinrich Klaasen, wrapped up the innings by removing Coetzee and Hetmyer in the 16th over and Cameron Gannon in the 18th, finishing with figures of 4 for 32.
Brief Scores
San Francisco Unicorns:
176 for 8 (Romario Shepherd 56, Matthew Short 52; Harmeet Singh 3-22, Gerald Coetzee 3-34)
Seattle Orcas:
144 all out (Shayan Jahangir 40; Haris Rauf 4-32, Short 3-12)

IBA Chief Umar Kremlev Lambasts Thomas Bach, Calls For IOC To Strip Imane Khelif Off Paris 2024 Gold
Kremlev urged the IOC to strip Algerian pugilist Khelif off her Paris 2024 gold citing her failed gender test results in the lead up to the quadrennial event. International Boxing Association chief Umar Kremlev voiced that the International Olympic Committee should strip Algerian boxer Imane Khelif of the gold she claimed in the women's 63 Kg category at the Paris Olympics 2024, and held former IOC chief Thomas Bach responsible for the pugilists participation in the quadrennial event despite the furore about her gender. Khelif was at the midst of the gender controversy that surrounded the Olympics in Paris but the Algerian did not let the storm get to her as she managed to claim the top-spot in her category. 'There is a lot of corruption surrounding the IOC, and many violations of good sporting principles," Kremlev said. 'The IOC is not fighting for the fairness in sport. The IOC is giving away medals based on their political interests. Imane Khelif should be made to return the Olympic medal from Paris," he continued. Kremlev reflected on the two times Khelfi had failed the gender eligibility test, due to presence of XY chromosome, first in 2022 and then again in 2023 and was disqualified from IBA events. Bach, however, gave the green light for the participation of Khelif at the global spectacle. 'The first test was carried out during the 2022 World Championships, after we noticed some suspicious, suspicious moments. We decided to test a group of athletes, not just one or two. Two of the results came back, let's say, abnormal," Kremlev revealed. 'It was the first time we had encountered a situation like this, so we felt it was necessary to conduct a second round of testing to be absolutely sure before making such a serious decision,' he added. Kremlev went on to snipe at Bach stating that the German's decisions were often politically motivated. 'Thomas Bach has always put politics to the podium, not the athletes who should be there in fact. And that's why a lot of sponsors have refused working the IOC further, because they are violating sports principles," Kremlev continued. 'Thomas Bach is leaving his position and running away like a rat," he added. 'He should kneel and apologise to all the female boxers who became victims of this situation. And he should financially compensate every athlete who suffered. And of course, the Olympic medals should be returned," he added. Bach, who made way for new IOC chief Kirsty Coventry at the helm of the international body, barred Russian athletes from taking part at the Olympics under the country's banner due to Russia's unprovoked attack on Ukraine. Kremlev questioned as to why Bach did not address the conflicts in the middle-east in the same manner. 'Why is he putting everything on Russia's shoulders? Why doesn't he comment on the situation between Israel and Iran, or between Israel and Gaza?' Kremlev went to on laud USA President Donald Trump for his stance on the participation of transgender women in women's sport. 'As you know, Donald Trump signed an order stating that women's sport is for women and men's sport is for men. I'm absolutely confident that no one will be able to bypass this at the Olympic Games now, because the rules have become very strict," the 42-year-old said. 'Everyone is copying us — they're conducting gender tests and are now being forced to do so. What we were calling for all along, the rest of the world is finally doing. They can't avoid it anymore, because the order has been signed — it's now law in the United States," the Russian added.

Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson rewrites WNBA scoring record book with blazing-fast path to 5,000 points The moment arrived with 4:04 remaining in the second quarter, when A'ja Wilson knocked down a mid-range jumper from the left elbow. It was her eighth point of the night and the one that officially pushed her past the 5,000-point threshold. Fans in Las Vegas erupted with applause, many waving signs emblazoned with '5,000,' as Wilson remained composed, acknowledging the moment quietly while receiving hugs from teammates and even some Sun players. Wilson finished the game with 22 points, bringing her career total to 5,015. According to ESPN, the 28-year-old forward is only the 28th player in WNBA history to cross the 5,000-point mark. In doing so, she joins an elite group that includes Diana Taurasi and Angel McCoughtry, and now ranks just behind Taj McWilliams-Franklin on the league's all-time scoring list. Wilson has been a force in the 2024 season. Entering Wednesday's game, she ranked second in the league in scoring with 21.1 points per game and second in rebounding with 9.8 per game. She's the only player in the top five across scoring, rebounding, steals, and blocks. The Aces, now 7-7, opened the game with a blistering 19-0 run. Jackie Young added 20 points, Chelsea Gray chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists, and three blocks, while Jewell Loyd added 13. Cam Newton slams Shedeur Sanders over reckless speeding, warns NFL rookies of life-threatening choices
Cam Newton has strongly criticized Shedeur Sanders for his recent speeding violations (Getty Images & Associative Press) Former NFL MVP Cam Newton didn't hold back when addressing Shedeur Sanders' recent string of speeding violations. Sanders, the Cleveland Browns' rookie quarterback, received two tickets in June—first for driving 91 mph in a 65 mph zone, and then, shockingly, just days later for going 101 mph in a 60 mph zone. The second violation reportedly happened during rookie orientation, drawing even more scrutiny. Cam Newton speaks from experience as he blasts Shedeur Sanders for dangerous driving Sanders owned up to his actions, admitting, 'I made some not great choices. I learn from them.' But Newton, on his 4th & 1 podcast, went further—calling the behavior reckless and addressing it as a serious cautionary tale for all young athletes. 'You can't pay your way out when the Grim Reaper shows up' — Newton's emotional warning — 4thand1show (@4thand1show) Newton's concern wasn't performative. He shared his own harrowing story of being involved in a car crash earlier this year, which shook him deeply. 'Driving a hundred? I've done that, bro,' Newton admitted. 'Going 101? That's extremely dangerous. You can't pay your way when you're trying to negotiate with the Grim Reaper.' Speaking directly to young players like Shedeur, he emphasized the value of life over luxury: 'I see a Rolls Royce, I see a Ferrari, I see a Bentley… but right now, I don't value those things. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Couple Decide To Go On A Diet, Here They Are A Year Later Daily Sport X Undo I value being able to say that I'm putting my children in position to never have to depend on football the way I needed to.' Shilo Sanders trolls his brother as fans split over reaction Adding a lighter twist to a serious situation, Shedeur's brother, Shilo Sanders, poked fun at the incident in a vlog filmed in Tampa: 'We gotta be careful crossing the street, especially if Shedeur is out here.' Shedeur laughed it off during a Twitch stream, saying, 'The situation wasn't funny, but how he said it was.' Despite the controversies, the Browns are handling the matter internally and have not issued any formal penalties. Shedeur's reps and depth chart status remain unchanged—for now.
