Days after Audi injures 5 sleeping on a footpath in Vasant Vihar in South Delhi, driver granted bail
Allegedly drunk while driving the car, the accused, Utsav Shekhar (40), was arrested soon after the incident. He has been granted bail, police said on Sunday.
When the hit-and-run happened, a pedestrian came to their help, said Sabami, and noted down the vehicle's number to report to the police.
While Sabami was discharged from the hospital last week, his wife, Ladhi (40), is still admitted to the AIIMS Trauma Centre.
Ladhi's daughter from a previous marriage, Bimla (11), and the couple's friends — Narayani (35), and her husband Ram Chander (45) — were among the others injured in the incident. All three have been discharged from the hospital. All of them hail from Ajmer in Rajasthan and came to Delhi 10 years ago, said officers.
It would still take Ladhi at least a week to recover, said the family. 'My wife suffered injuries in the neck and back, among other parts of the body. I just turned out to be lucky. If I too had suffered such grave injuries, who would have earned for the family?' he asked.
Ratan Lal, 35, Ladhi's brother, who works as a labourer in Gurgaon, said that he got to know about the accident on July 10 and has been at AIIMS since then.
'Ladhi's treatment is still on. I hope that we will get some help with the hospital bill. We don't have much to pay,' he said.
The accident took place near a petrol pump in front of Shiva Camp in Vasant Vihar. Around 1.45 am on July 9, a police control room call was made to report a crash in which five people were hit by an Audi car while they were sleeping on the footpath.
'Statements of eyewitnesses were recorded, wherein they stated that a white Audi Car ran over them while they were sleeping on the footpath,' DCP (South West) Amit Goel said.
According to the police, Utsav then allegedly went on to hit another truck, about 200 metres from the accident spot, before he was finally arrested by the Delhi Police. The accused, police said, is a property dealer based in Noida and was going towards his home in Dwarka.

Delhi Sub-Inspector Goes On The Run With Rs 2 Crore, Travels To Goa, Manali With Girlfriend
Last Updated: A sub-inspector with the Delhi Police got the money released from the court by submitting fake documents and eloped with his girlfriend. Both of them are married. A sub-inspector with the Delhi Police, who helped solve several cyber fraud cases, allegedly stole Rs 2 crore and fled with his sub-inspector girlfriend. He is believed to have used the stolen money to travel to prominent tourist hubs like Goa, Manali and Jammu and Kashmir. According to a report by NDTV, the sub-inspector, identified as Ankur Malik, was posted at Cyber Thana, North-East district. He secured the release of the stolen money by obtaining a court order using fake complainants' names, then redirected the funds to bank accounts belonging to his acquaintances. The 2021 batch officer went on a seven-day medical leave and never returned. At the same time, sub-inspector Neha Punia of the same batch, posted at the GTB Enclave police station, also went missing. After a missing report was filed, an ensuing investigation revealed that Malik had siphoned off crores from cyber-fraud recoveries and had an affair with Punia. Both Malik and Punia are married – Malik's wife resides in Baraut, Uttar Pradesh, while Punia's husband lives in Delhi's Rohini. Malik and Punia became friends in 2021 and allegedly planned the fraud around that time, as per the investigation. The police traced down the missing sub-inspectors through technical surveillance and intelligence inputs. The duo were tracked and arrested in Indore after four months of search, where it was revealed that they wanted to start a new life under fake identities. Gold worth Rs 1 crore, 11 mobile phones, a laptop, three ATM cards and other items were recovered from their possession. Three others, identified as Mohammad Ilyas, Aafi alias Monu and Shadab, whose accounts were used by the accused to transfer funds were also taken into custody. Police said Malik knew no one would claim the money, so he got it released from the court by submitting fake documents and fled, NDTV reported. He vacationed with his girlfriend in Goa, Manali and other places. After reaching Indore, he bought gold in exchange for the cash to make it harder for authorities to track them, police said. They had intended to get fake IDs to start a new life in Madhya Pradesh. They are currently under interrogation. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Truck with disaster: Violations surge 46%
In July, trucks have been involved in two major fatal accidents in south Delhi, highlighting the menace of heavy vehicles on the roads. According to Delhi Police data, so far this year, heavy vehicles were involved in 82 fatal accidents, causing 85 deaths and injuring 187 people. Last year, 87 fatal crashes ended up claiming 89 lives and injuring 205 persons in the corresponding period. The data shows that during this period, traffic violations by heavy vehicles increased by 46 per cent from last year. While 17,776 challans were issued in the first six months of 2024, this year, 26,025 challans have already been issued. Improper or obstructive parking, which was the most frequent offence, increased sharply from 10,147 cases in 2024 to 14,473 in 2025. Violations of restriction of time (no entry) also surged notably, from 4,108 to 7,326. Jumping traffic signal, while showing a slight decline, remained high, with 1,766 cases in 2024 and 1,401 in 2025. The number of heavy vehicle drivers not using seat belts went up from 702 to 1,120, highlighting safety concerns. Vehicles operating without a pollution under control certificate (PUCC) were reported 686 times in 2024 and 914 this year. Violations related to disobeying lawful directions went up steeply, from 118 to 415. Trucks carrying sand or dust without proper covering (no entry) almost doubled, rising from 157 to 295. Vehicles operating without fitness certification decreased slightly, from 92 to 81, the data showed. According to an officer, these violations mostly increase at night. Once the no-entry period ends, drivers of heavy vehicles tend to speed. Some also try to enter during no-entry hours, the officer said, adding that obstructive parking was another major problem, often causing snarls. A senior police officer said teams have been deployed at various locations to curb violations by heavy vehicles and enforce compliance. Rohit Baluja, president, Institute of Road Traffic Education, said heavy vehicles face a big challenge on Delhi roads, which are not engineered for mixed-traffic conditions, especially as two-wheelers wriggle their way in and around larger vehicles. Footpaths remain encroached upon by vendors, parked vehicles or other debris, forcing pedestrians to walk on the carriageway. Legislation also does not support heavy vehicles, he said. For instance, Delhi Motor Vehicles Rules demand that where bus lanes are segregated and marking on roads or streets have been provided, all buses and goods carriages plying during permitted hours will be confined to the bus lanes, and no other motor vehicle shall enter that space. When accidents occur, heavy vehicles are always labelled as accused, said Baluja. Anil Chhikara, a transport and vehicle expert, said the primary reason behind most of the fatalities involving heavy vehicles is excessive speed. According to him, the accidents could be significantly reduced if speed governor devices are installed and enforced in vehicles across the city. A speed governor, he explained, is a specialised piece of instrument designed to regulate and control the speed of an electric motor or engine, preventing vehicles from exceeding safe speed limits.

Two Delhi cops siphon money seized in cybercrime cases, arrested in Indore
Two Delhi Police sub-inspectors (SI), absconding since March after they allegedly siphoned money seized in cybercrime cases, were arrested from Indore last week, police said on Tuesday. Police identified one of the officers as Ankur Malik (32), a resident of UP's Baghpat who was posted at Northeast district cyber police station. His female associate, whom the police did not name, was posted at GTB Enclave police station. The arrests came after a coordinated raid by Delhi Police and local police teams, leading to the recovery of gold and cash, said police. According to officers, Malik went on medical leave on March 17 but did not return to duty after that. Around the same time, the female SI also stopped coming to work without giving any notice. 'After Malik stopped showing up to work, we looked at his bank accounts… We noticed several big transactions that did not match his salary. We traced the money back to the accounts that were seized in cybercrime cases…,' said an officer. 'At first, we didn't know that the woman SI was also involved. While tracking Malik, CCTV camera footage from a hotel in Noida showed them leaving a building together. That's how we connected the two,' the officer added. Following this, three FIRs under sections 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 336(3) (forgery for purpose of cheating), 338 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 340(2) (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record), and 61(2) (criminal conspiracy) of the BNS were registered against Malik and the woman SI. 'During a primary probe, the team found cyber fraud involving Rs 75 lakh was illegally transferred through four separate fraudulent transactions… by presenting judicial orders obtained through dishonest means, issued on behalf of purported complainants… Based on technical surveillance and information gathered through various sources, on July 18, the team conducted a raid in coordination with the local police at Emerald City in Indore, leading to the arrest of the absconding police officers,' said DCP (Northeast) Ashish Mishra. During the raid, police said they recovered Rs 12 lakh in cash, 820 gm worth of gold bars and coins, 200 gm of gold jewellery, 11 smartphones, a laptop, three ATM cards, and multiple documents. During questioning, the two allegedly revealed the names of their accomplices. Following this, police said, three men – Mohammad Ilyaas (40) of Chand Bagh, Arif (35) of Kabir Nagar, and Shadab (23) of New Kardampuri, all residents of Delhi – were arrested.
