5 New York Giants position battles to watch vs. New York Jets

USA Todaya day ago
The New York Giants will face off against their MetLife Stadium co-tenants, the New York Jets, in their annual preseason matchup this Saturday night. The two teams engaged in joint practices this week and now will play a full-contact game that will have roster ramifications on both sides.
The Giants, however, still have much to decide before kickoff weekend, and this Saturday's game should settle some of those position battles.
Here are five position battles to keep an eye on against the Jets.
No. 2 cornerback
With Paulson Adebo the clear No. 1 and Dru Phillips the starter in the slot, the Giants would like to get this thing settled. Deonte Banks has been working hard and has looked improved, but still isn't getting his head around some plays. His spatial awareness has to get better. Cor'Dale Flott shook off some earlier nicks and is now practicing in full. The best man will get the job.
No. 4 wide receiver
This was Jalin Hyatt's spot to lose, and he is in danger of losing it. The Giants have a lot of competition at the backup wideout positions with veterans such as Lil'Jordan Humphery, Ihmir Smith-Maresette, and Zach Pascal, and young players like Montrell Washington and Beaux Collins. Hyatt again is battling some nagging ailments, and his time could be running out here.
No. 2 running back
With top dog Tyrone Tracy Jr. not likely to see much action, and rookie Cam Skattebo still sidelined with a hamstring issue, the Giants will use Dante Miller, Jonathan Ward, and Devin Singletary in this game. Miller is the hot hand while the other two are more seasoned. Either way, the Giants' post-Barkley era backfield is looking pretty good. It would be nice to see Skattebo get some reps, though.
Right guard
Greg Van Roten, the only Giant to play 100 percent of the offensive snaps last season, is the starter. But he's 35 and the Giants are seeking longer-term solutions here. Enter a bunch of names, starting with Evan Neal and Jake Kubas. Other possibilities are rookie Marcus Mbow, who has primarily played tackle thus far, and even right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor. This spot is in play.
Quarterback
It's going to be a topic of conversation until it isn't. Russell Wilson will be the starter in Washington come kickoff weekend. The Giants owe him that much, but if rookie Jaxson Dart continues to ball out, the fans will make their preference known. For Wilson to stave off Dart, he'll have to show he can put up points. That's the goal here. If he can't, Dart will get his shot.

Jets vs. Giants prediction: NFL preseason Week 2 picks, best bets for the Snoopy Bowl

It's the 2025 NFL preseason, and this is perhaps the biggest one we'll have on the calendar. The Giants are strong favorites to win for a preseason game, coming in at -195 odds on BetMGM with the spread sitting at 3.5 points. The Jets initially opened as -1.5 point favorites, but the line moved four points in the Giants' direction. There aren't too many options in the prop markets, though Justin Fields could get some reps, and there are some markets related to the quarterback on FanDuel. Fields is +500 on FanDuel to throw a touchdown pass, while Garrett Wilson is 14/1 to score his team's first touchdown. Wilson is highly unlikely to play more than one drive in this game. The same goes for Breece Hall, who is +850 to score the game's first touchdown. We could see plenty of the Jets starters in the Snoopy Bowl. Getty Images Jets vs. Giants prediction The Giants have lost this matchup four straight times, losing 13-10 last season. In their first preseason game, Jaxson Dart put on a show as the Giants scored 34 points in a win over the Bills. It certainly seems like the Giants have had a strong preseason and have far superior quarterback depth, with Dart expected to play plenty, along with Jameis Winston and Tommy DeVito. If you're looking for action, the Giants are the play. Betting on the NFL? By most accounts, the Giants' defensive front ate the Jets up in joint practices earlier this month. If the Giants' defensive line is that dominant, the Jets are sure to be in trouble. Tyler Nubin's quest to regain ball-hawking prowess comes with new Giants challenge

It is one of those questions that usually prompts a familiar refrain. Ask a defensive back about his hands — as in, his ability to catch the football — and he will proudly proclaim they are just fine, thank you. Access the Giants like never before Get texts from Paul Schwartz with all the latest Giants news and insights, exclusive to Sports+ subscribers. tRY IT NOW This, of course, flies in the face of so much evidence created during training camps far and near, when the ball is in the air and a defensive player fails to secure it. That prompts the unkind comment: That's why he plays defensive back and not wide receiver. Tyler Nubin takes exception to this train of thought. 'Very confident, very confident,'' he said, when he was asked what he feels about his hands. 'I showed them my whole career.'' Well, Nubin certainly showed them during a five-year college stay at Minnesota, where in 55 games he came away with 13 interceptions. That ball-hawking prowess was one of the traits that the Giants appreciated when they made him a second-round pick in the 2024 draft. Nubin started the first 13 games of his rookie season before an ankle injury cut short his first year in the NFL. At the time of the injury, Nubin led the team with 98 tackles. 3 Giants safety Tyler Nubin (27) makes an interception during training camp at the Quest Diagnostics center, Friday, Aug. 1, 2025, in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Corey Sipkin for the NY POST But he did not have a single interception. Nubin looked back on every snap from his rookie year and determined he will never again go a full season without an interception. 'I mean, I believe in myself more than anybody else ever can,'' Nubin said. 'I feel like that every game, whether I have zero picks or two or three, there's going to be something I can look at, 'Man, I could have had another one.' 'That's just football, that's just the game. I don't dwell too much on it. I don't count how many picks I had the year before because you got to do it again the next year — whether I had 20 picks last year you would be still telling me, 'Hey how are gonna get 20 picks again this year?' Every year's a new year, so I'm not really worried about that.'' The Giants this past offseason revamped their secondary, signing cornerback Paulson Adebo and safety Jevon Holland, two young veterans — Holland is 25, Adebo is 26 — with extensive starting experience with their previous teams. Adebo accumulated 10 interceptions for the Saints and Holland had five for the Dolphins. 3 Giants safety Tyler Nubin (27) talks with media during training camp at Quest Diagnostics Training Center. Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images Something had to change with a Giants defensive backfield that last season went an NFL-record 11 consecutive games without an interception, and only the Browns managed to get fewer interceptions than the five the Giants got their hands on. Nubin knows that needs to be fixed. 'Being in an attack mindset, that's been really what my goals are here and just doing my job,'' he said. 'That's what I'm focusing on every single day. I know it's gonna come, I'm not really worried about it. 'Instincts, man, and just being in the right place at the right time. That is what I try to do, being in the right place so I have the opportunity to read the quarterback and make breaks on the ball. That's what I'm focusing on.'' With the addition of Holland — who primarily played a deep safety spot with the Dolphins — Nubin might be asked to line up more frequently in the box. That could cut into his opportunities for interceptions. Asked to assess the defensive backfield, veteran wide receiver Darius Slayton referred to the back end first. 'I think it starts with Holland and Nubin,'' Slayton said. 'Nubes is a pit bull. He gets under his tackles. He's physical. But he's also rangy. Holland has added a good dimension of range to our defense. He's also a willing tackler, but what stood out is his ability to cover sideline to sideline and get to the deep ball, and also track and catch the deep ball. It's something that he's flashed a lot during camp, and I think will be a big addition for us.'' 3 Giants safety Tyler Nubin #27, breaks up a pass intended for New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers #1, during practice at the Giants training facility in East Rutherford, NJ. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post Nubin is part of a 2024 draft class that made an impact last season and figures to do so again, with receiver Malik Nabers, running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. and tight end Theo Johnson starters on offense, and Nubin and cornerback Dru Phillips starters on defense. 'I've got a lot of goals for myself this year, but I'm going to keep those to myself,' Nubin said. 'I'm going to let my play speak for it and let everybody else decide what it is, at the end of the day. 'I always want to be an impact player. That's what I pride myself on, is being somebody that when it's crunch time I'm going to show up.'
