Om Prakash takes charge as Rajkot collector

Time of India23-06-2025
Rajkot: Om Prakash, a 2016-batch IAS officer, officially assumed charge as the 51st district collector and district magistrate of Rajkot, after a transfer order was issued by the state govt on June 17.
Before this, he served as the municipal commissioner of Junagadh and held the position of deputy municipal commissioner in Ahmedabad.
One of the immediate and significant challenges before him is overseeing the organization of Rajkot's renowned Janmashtami fair. In the wake of the TRP Game Zone fire tragedy, the authorities are implementing strict safety regulations for public events. Ride operators have been urging the administration to ease some restrictions.
Addressing mediapersons, Om Prakash emphasized that public safety remains top priority. "We won't compromise on any policies during the Janmashtami fair. This fair holds great significance for the people of Rajkot. We will hold discussions with all stakeholders to arrive at a balanced and practical solution," he said.
He also addressed the ongoing traffic issues on the Jetpur highway, which is currently under construction. Drawing on his experience from his previous posting, he remarked, "Having served in Junagadh before Rajkot, I am aware of the condition of this road. I will coordinate with the National Highways Authority of India to expedite the work."

Will challenge jail term in HC, says Bachchu Kadu

Nagpur: Former MLA and Prahar Janshakti Party leader Bachchu Kadu will challenge his conviction in Bombay high court after a Mumbai special court found him guilty of assaulting an IAS officer at the secretariat in 2019. On Tuesday, the court sentenced Kadu to three months in prison after finding him guilty under Sections 353 (use of criminal force to deter public servant), 506 (criminal intimidation), and 504 (intentional insult) of the Indian Penal Code. His sentence was suspended, and bail was granted to allow him to file an appeal. Talking to TOI, Kadu said his lawyers would approach the high Ccourt "probably in the next couple of weeks." He maintained the incident spiralled from protests against alleged irregularities in the state's recruitment exams. "This process also involved a company blacklisted for its role in Madhya Pradesh's Vyapam scam." According to Kadu, the examinations were "highly opaque." Question papers were leaked, mass copying was rampant, and the standard of questions deteriorated to the extent that trivial queries like 'Who is the lead actress in Sairat?' were being asked, he said. "Job racketeers across Maharashtra were taking bribes for appointments, many exam centres faced severe technical glitches, and candidates were even using mobile phones to solve papers," he told TOI.
