Heroic firefighters made sure no one was left behind in gas blast [WATCH]
"We went house to house to ensure everyone was evacuated," said Selangor Fire and Rescue Department deputy director, Khairul Azuwan Ibrahim.
The scale of the disaster was clear to the first responders the moment they arrived.
"It was the kind of massive fire we rarely encounter, especially so close to residential areas," he said, recalling how 22 fire engines and 111 personnel from 11 stations were mobilised to tackle the inferno.
He said some residents were understandably in a state of panic, but firefighters did their best to calm them and bring them to safety.
With the flames burning at over 1,000 degrees Celcius and producing twice the heat radiation of an ordinary blaze, conventional firefighting techniques were not an option.
"In a gas fire, a direct attack is not advisable," Khairul explained.
"The safest approach is to close the valves, secure the area and let the gas burn itself out."
Although the main gas valves were shut off remotely from Segamat early on, gas trapped within an 18km stretch of the pipeline continued to fuel the fire.
Firefighters worked through extreme conditions to contain the flames as the remaining gas burned away.
Khairul said one firefighter was treated for dehydration as a result of the intense heat.
He described the incident as "one of the worst" the department had ever faced, especially because it happened in a densely populated area.
Support for victims
Three months after the disaster, residents from the 227 affected homes are slowly picking up the pieces.
Kota Kemuning assemblyman S. Preakas said relief has come from various sources, including the government, Petronas, and contributions from businesses and individuals.
The state government has provided rental assistance of RM2,000, reviewed every three months to help families until their homes can be rebuilt.
Preakas urged authorities to take the incident as a "wake-up call," stressing the need for stricter rules and enforcement to prevent developments near high-risk zones such as gas pipelines.
"Moving forward, we have to avoid development near pipelines. This tragedy has set a precedent for better safety measures," he said.

DOSH announces stable gas supply for Putra Heights homes
KUALA LUMPUR: Stable gas supply will be restored through temporary piping to houses in Putra Heights affected by the April 1 gas pipeline fire, starting today. According to the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), a temporary gas pipeline measuring approximately 210 metres in length has been installed to replace the pipe damaged in the incident. "Soil improvement and stabilisation were carried out at the site using a bridge foundation support structure measuring approximately eight metres by 100 metres to provide stronger support for the pipeline," DOSH said in a statement today. In addition, to ensure maximum safety, several stringent tests were conducted, including non-destructive testing (NDT) on welded joints and a 24-hour pressure test. It added that test results confirmed by DOSH and an independent third party showed no leakage or pressure drop. Phase Two of the project will involve replacing three gas pipelines, each approximately 200 metres long, at the affected sites. These pipes will be laid on concrete slab structures to ensure long-term safety and durability. "The engineering design for this phase is currently being finalised, with operations expected to commence in the third quarter of next year," it said. In addition, several geotechnical studies, including soil mapping, rock layer analysis, and ground movement monitoring, have been conducted to ensure the overall stability of the installation site. As an additional safety measure, Petronas has been instructed to provide real-time monitoring access to the pipe isolation valve system, enabling rapid closure in the event of an emergency. The department also assured that all work will be closely monitored and conducted impartially to safeguard the safety of workers, residents, and nearby businesses. "DOSH understands the urgent need for residents and businesses to have a safe and stable gas supply restored as soon as possible. We are committed to monitoring every stage of this project to ensure it is carried out responsibly and to restore consumer confidence in the safety of the gas pipeline system in the area," it added. The April 1 fire incident caused 81 homes to be completely destroyed, with structural damage exceeding 40 per cent; 81 homes partially damaged; 57 homes affected but not burned; and 218 homes left unaffected. - BERNAMA

MIRI (July 1): A total of 149 households from Kampung Pujut Tanjung Batu affected by the flash floods earlier this year received assistance in the form of furniture and electrical appliances worth RM200,000. The donated items were contributed by the Kuok Foundation in collaboration with the Club of Miri Mandarin and the Lions Club of Lambir Miri. The event was witnessed by Minister of Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who expressed his gratitude to the non-governmental organisations for their timely and generous support. UMS Labuan students raise RM3,820 to help stray animals
The UMSKAL students and Veterinary Services Department staff at the presentation of mock cheque. LABUAN (July 1): The community support animal welfare initiative 'Paws of Hope – Spay, Neuter and Feed' has successfully raised RM3,820 through a crowdfunding campaign on the MyStar app in just one month. The project was organized by students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Labuan International Campus (UMSKAL) under the supervision of their Corporate Finance lecturer, Dr Suzillah Binti Sidek. Coordinated by Gayatheri, the project's director, this student-led initiative aims to help stray animals by providing vital care, food and vaccinations. The campaign's official closing ceremony took place on June 12 at the Labuan Veterinary Services Department. From the total funds raised, RM2,065 was allocated to the Veterinary Services Department to cover the cost of spaying, neutering and vaccinating 18 cats. The remaining funds was used to purchase food for stray cats and dogs to support a food bank initiative for animals in need across Labuan. The project also received strong support from the local community including Lawrence Yap, owner of Pet Home Daycare: MaYa, who assisted with animal transport. Yap shared that the initiative deeply touched him, inspired by the memory of his beloved pet, Maya, who had passed away. This loss led him to dedicate his life to helping stray animals as a meaningful expression of love. The closing ceremony also included a symbolic handover of a mock cheque to the Veterinary Services Department and tokens of appreciation for all contributors and partners who had supported the project. Gayatheri expressed her heartfelt appreciation and honor in the collaborative efforts of students, government agencies, NGOs and the local community. 'This project is not just an academic but it is a small initiative that has created a big impact on the lives of stray animals in Labuan.
