Utah Man Drowns Trying to Rescue Girl in Reservoir

New York Times2 days ago
A 31-year-old man drowned over the weekend after jumping into a reservoir in Utah to save a 12-year-old girl who was drifting on an inflatable tube, the Utah County Sheriff's Office said on Monday.
The man, Daniel Braga Figueiredo, 31, borrowed a paddle board and went out to help the girl, a relative, before 7 p.m. Saturday. They were at the Silver Lake Flat Reservoir, just over an hour drive southeast of Salt Lake City.
'The two were seen struggling to consolidate themselves, and both ended up in the water,' the Utah County Sheriff's Office said. Bystanders saw Mr. Figueiredo lifting the girl onto an inflatable device, before disappearing in the water. His body was recovered from the reservoir at 9:30 p.m. The girl survived.
Austin Isbell, a spokesman for the Utah Department of Natural Resources Division of Outdoor Recreation, said in an email on Wednesday that Mr. Figueiredo helped the young woman onto the stand-up paddle board 'but could not board or hold onto it himself and drowned.'
The girl and Mr. Figueiredo were not wearing life jackets, according to Mr. Isbell. It is unclear how they were related.
He said that life jacket use is critically important, especially during the busy summer season.
'The incident at Silver Lake Flat Reservoir was preventable,' Mr. Isbell said. He said that the girl on the inflatable tube 'was struggling to paddle back to shore but was not in danger.'
Mr. Isbell said that all vessels, including boats, kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and canoes, must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved wearable personal flotation device or life jacket for each passenger.
The water temperature was around 71 degrees Fahrenheit, which is just above the level at which water should be treated with caution, according to the National Center for Cold Water Safety.
About 4,000 people die from unintentional drowning each year in the United States, according to the American Red Cross. Many are children.
The Red Cross advises people not to put themselves in danger when trying to make a rescue. Instead, they should call for help, since aiding someone who is at risk of drowning requires more than just basic swimming skills.
There are significant gaps in access to swimming lessons. More than 60 percent of Black children, 45 percent of Hispanic children and 40 percent of white children have little or no swimming ability, according to a 2017 study by the University of Memphis and University of Nevada. The study also found that 79 percent of children from households with incomes of less than $50,000 have little or no swimming ability.
The Silver Lake Flat Reservoir lies in the mountains of American Fork Canyon, near the Lone Peak Wilderness.

Sister pays tribute to drowned Briton who ‘died trying to save his friend'

The sister of a British man who drowned in Portugal has said he died trying to save his best friend's life. King Edonmi, 29, and Mo Liasu, 27, both from Ipswich, lost their lives less than 24 hours after arriving on holiday in Albufeira, on Portugal's southern coast. The pair are believed to have drowned in a hotel swimming pool on July 15. Candles, flowers and tealights spelling out the men's names have since been laid near flats on Ipswich Waterfront. Kemi Edonmi, King's sister, paid tribute to her brother online, writing: 'My best friend is really gone. 'Rest in peace to my big brother and his best friend Mo, we love you and will never forget you both. 'The whole family is comforted by the fact that King died in Christ. 'From Jesus – For Jesus – Back to Jesus. We shall all meet again.' She said King had died while trying to save Mo's life. 'My brother died trying to save his friend's life,' she said. Some local reports suggested the men had been drinking, but Ms Edonmi insisted this was not true. 'My brother and Mo do not drink and were not intoxicated at the time of the incident,' she wrote. 'Articles with false information and insensitive comments don't know the pain they're causing the people closest to King and Mo.' A Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: 'We are supporting the families of two British men who have died in Portugal and are in contact with the local authorities.' A fundraising page launched in the men's memory has raised more than £22,000 to help pay for the repatriation of their bodies. It said: 'On what was meant to be a joyful holiday in Portugal, our two dear friends Mo and King tragically lost their lives less than 24 hours after arriving. 'What was supposed to be sunshine and laughter turned into heartbreak no one could have imagined.' The Policia Judiciaria, Portugal's criminal investigation police, said the incident is not being treated as suspicious. A spokesperson said: 'The inspection of the scene revealed no evidence of criminal activity. 'Witnesses to the events were interviewed, confirming the investigation's belief that it was an accident.'

2 adults charged after 13-year-old Washington County girl drowns in West Virginia

Two adults are facing charges after a 13-year-old Washington County girl drowned while swimming in the Ohio River in West Virginia. Ashley Shelton, 29, and Joshua Lockerbie, 34, of Weirton have been arrested and charged with one felony count of child neglect causing death and five felony counts of gross neglect of a child creating a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury, Weirton police announced. On June 30, police said Shelton and Lockerbie took six kids ranging in age from 4 to 13 to the Ohio River to swim near the Veterans Memorial Bridge. Heavy rain throughout the day made the water levels high, and police said 13-year-old Reese Hanshaw of Burgettstown drowned after she was swept away by the current. Police said there were no flotation devices, and both Shelton and Lockerbie knew that none of the children were strong swimmers. Both Shelton and Lockerbie were arrested on Wednesday, arraigned and given a $150,000 bond. Both of them were incarcerated at the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville. According to the Child's Safety Network, nearly 900 children and adolescents ages 0-19 die every year in the United States from unintentional drowning. For children ages 5-19, the network says drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury deaths.
