NRES Strengthens National Climate Action Commitment Through ASEAN-Korea Methane Mitigation Project
PUTRAJAYA, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) has strengthened Malaysia's commitment to climate action through the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation (AKCMM), worth US$20 million, funded by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF). NRES said that the regional project was being implemented in nine ASEAN member states from 2024 to 2027, including Malaysia. According to NRES, the strategic partnership is carried out in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), which acts as the implementing partner for the project under the Partnership for ASEAN-ROK Methane Action (PARMA), announced during the ASEAN-South Korea Foreign Ministers' Meeting in 2023. 'This strategic initiative highlights NRES's key role in advancing the national environmental agenda and supporting ASEAN's aspiration towards a climate-resilient community,' the ministry said in a statement today. NRES said this commitment was continued through Malaysia's participation with more than 150 countries in signing the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). According to the statement, the pledge outlines Malaysia's commitment to collectively reduce global methane emissions by at least 30 per cent from 2020 levels by 2030. 'To that end, NRES will work closely with industry players to develop a national methane reduction framework and action plan by the end of this project,' it added. Meanwhile, NRES welcomed the potential for environmental cooperation between ASEAN and the United States (US) as well as China. According to the ministry, Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening strategic regional cooperation in addressing environmental and climate change challenges through the 4th ASEAN-United States High-Level Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change and the 22nd ASEAN Plus Three Senior Officials Meeting on the Environment.

13MP: Malaysia to table climate change bill, launch National plan for climate resilience
PETALING JAYA: The government will table a National Climate Change Bill and introduce a National Adaptation Plan under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) to regulate Malaysia's climate response and strengthen national preparedness against the impacts of global warming. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the reforms reflect Malaysia's serious commitment to preserving the health of the planet and tackling climate-related threats. 'The responsibility of preserving the Earth's health and addressing the effects of climate change must not be taken lightly,' he said while tabling 13MP in Parliament. The National Adaptation Plan will serve as a framework to better prepare the country for climate-related risks, especially as extreme weather events become more frequent and severe. Urban and spatial planning will also be updated, with disaster risk management measures to be integrated into all State Structure Plans and Local Plans. To enhance disaster preparedness, the government will improve early warning systems by deploying artificial intelligence (AI)-powered technology, ensuring faster alerts and greater protection for the public.

KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 (Bernama) -- ASEAN countries and regional dialogue partners continue to strengthen cooperation on environmental and climate change issues through the 36th ASEAN Senior Officials on the Environment Meeting (ASOEN-36), held here today. The meeting featured three key dialogue sessions - the 19th ASEAN-Japan Dialogue on Environmental Cooperation, the 5th ASEAN-Republic of Korea (ROK) Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change, and the ASEAN-European Union (EU) High-Level Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change. According to a statement from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), these dialogues serve as strategic platforms to enhance regional cooperation between ASEAN member states and dialogue partners in addressing environmental and climate challenges collectively and effectively. 'Key topics discussed included the progress status of the Strategic Programme for ASEAN Environment and Climate (SPACE). This initiative was developed to address three pressing environmental challenges in the ASEAN region — climate change, pollution control and biodiversity conservation. 'Through these discussions, various programmes and initiatives were identified to support the implementation of SPACE towards sustainable development in the region, such as the Regional Knowledge Centre for Marine Plastic Debris (RKC-MPD) (ERIA) and the ASEAN Climate Change Strategic Action Plan (ACCSAP),' the statement said. NRES added that discussions also emphasised efforts to control marine litter through the implementation of joint programmes under the Regional Action Plan on Marine Litter (RAP-MALI). The action plan reflects the strong commitment and cooperation among ASEAN countries to enhance integrated marine waste management efforts at the regional level. In a move to reinforce regional collaboration towards transitioning to a circular economy, NRES announced that the ASEAN Circular Economy Forum (ACEF) 2025 will be hosted in Malaysia this October, with support from the Enhanced Regional EU-ASEAN Dialogue Instrument (E-READI). This forum serves as a strategic platform for formulating and coordinating approaches for the transition to a circular economy through national policies and regional initiatives aligned with sustainable development goals.
