Pinoys 'disappointed' with gov't? Here's what Cabinet secretaries say
Some Cabinet secretaries have expressed their sentiments regarding the pronouncement of President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. that the public is disappointed with the services provided by the government.
Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma told GMA News Online that the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) would ensure the prompt and proper delivery of services to the public. Laguesma added that the agency agrees with the statement that Filipinos are already tired of too much politics.
"The DOLE is in full support of the President's remark that the Filipinos are indeed tired of too much politics that caused division and polarization in our country which has affected the speedy recovery of our economy," Laguesma said.
"For our part, DOLE further commits to enhance prompt and proper delivery of services and make our programs accessible to our constituencies particularly the workers," he added.
Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco, for her part, said the Department of Tourism (DOT) holds firm to the principle that public service must rise above politics, saying that its foremost duty is to serve with integrity and compassion.
"In the face of adversity—both at home and abroad—we remain resolute in advancing programs that uplift lives: by supporting communities, enhancing infrastructure, building local capacities, and sustaining the recovery of our tourism sector," Frasco said in a message.
Frasco also said the DOT stands united in the country's mission "to create meaningful employment, empower the countryside, and position the Philippines as a model of inclusive, resilient, and sustainable tourism."
Meanwhile, Budget Secretary Amenah Pangandaman said the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) wholeheartedly fulfills its duties for the nation. She backed the President in emphasizing the importance of prioritizing the people, doing what is right, and ensuring that meaningful and timely services are delivered to Filipinos.
"Inspired by the President's reflections on the 2025 midterm elections, we remain committed to learning from one another and transforming our national goals into tangible actions that reach and uplift every Filipino we are privileged to serve," Pangandaman said.
In a podcast with broadcaster Anthony Taberna, Marcos said he has two conclusions in the Eleksyon 2025—the people are tired of politics and they are disappointed with the government.
Marcos said, "Disappointed ang tao sa serbisyo ng gobyerno. Hindi nila nararamdaman at masyadong mabagal ang galaw nang pagbubuo ng mga project na hindi pa nila maramdaman."
(The public is disappointed with government services. They say they do not feel the impact of these services and that projects move toward completion too slowly.)

Tarriela: Publicizing WPS incidents to ensure Marcos' successor will still defend PH territory
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea (WPS) Commodore Jay Tarriela on Saturday said the NTF-WPS' move to publicize China's aggression in the disputed waters was aimed at ensuring that the next President will continue to defend the country's maritime sovereignty. 'We need to reach out to increase awareness more para siguraduhin natin ang Pangulo ng 2028 is not somebody who is going to set aside our fight in the WPS at sasabihin ulit walang kinalaman sa sikmura ng Pilipino ito, magkakagiyera at mangangakong magje-jetski,' Tarriela said. 'We have to make sure na ang mananalong President by 2028 is somebody who is going to pick up what PBBM has started. Itong pangulo na ito ang patuloy na titindig at itutuloy ang laban natin pagdating sa issue ng WPS,' the PCG spokesperson said. To recall, former President Rodrigo Duterte, when he was campaigning in 2016, remarked about riding a jetski to the WPS and telling the Chinese that it belonged to the Philippines. Duterte, however, later backracked and said that the remark 'was a campaign joke.' Tarriela said that the NTF-WPS' transparency efforts, which started in 2023, were meant to increase awareness of Filipinos on the issue of the WPS, 'and I think we have been receiving positive impacts because of that.' 'We can see from 89% awareness of the Filipino people pagdating sa issue ng WPS… the second objective is for the international community to understand na meron isang bansa na katulad ng Tsina that doesn't care about the international law, that doesn't adhere to the UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) na pinirmahan din naman nila,' he said. Beyond politics The PCG spokesperson further said that defending the country's maritime sovereignty in the WPS should be a shared responsibility among Filipinos. 'Para sa akin ang usapin ang usapin ng WPS goes beyond politics, goes beyond social needs. Ang issue natin dito that is being challenged here is our identity as Filipinos. Ilang beses ko na sinabi sa ating Kalayaan ang independence natin utang natin nitong lahat sa ating mga bayaning Pilipino na nagbuwis ng buhay dito,' Tarriela said. Tensions continue as Beijing claims almost all of the South China Sea, including parts that fall within Manila's exclusive economic zone. Retired SC justices sign San Beda statement urging VP Sara Duterte impeachment trial
'There is no sound constitutional and legal basis for any delay in the trial. In fact, an undue delay sends the signal to the nation that mandated processes are thwarted for ulterior ends,' the statement read. Professors at the San Beda University Graduate School of Law have asked the Senate to proceed with the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte. Among them are retired Supreme Court Associate Justices Adolf Azcuna and Jose Vitug, and graduate school dean Fr. Ranhilio Aquino. Their statement came a day after more than 100 members of the faculty of the University of the Philippines College of Law made a similar call for the Senate to hear the articles of impeachment against the Vice President. 'We, professors of the Graduate School of Law of San Beda University, in our individual capacities, respectfully urge the Senate of the Philippines to proceed with the trial of the Vice President in accordance with Article XI of the Constitution,' the San Beda law professors said in their statement. The members of the faculty said, 'Article XI is clear that when the verified complaint is endorsed by at least one-third of the members of the House of Representatives, trial by the Senate must thereupon proceed.' 'There is no sound constitutional and legal basis for any delay in the trial. In fact, an undue delay sends the signal to the nation that mandated processes are thwarted for ulterior ends,' the statement read. The statement said that accountability is crucial to the workings of a government that should be able to earn the respect and trust of citizens. The trial is a measure of accountability. 'The problem with government, and the resulting lack of public trust in it, has to do with deficits in measures of accountability,' it said. 'We therefore urge the Senate to convene as ordained by the Constitution and to proceed with the impeachment trial of the Vice-President,' it added. On Thursday, over 100 members of the UP College of Law faculty called on the Senate to start the impeachment trial and "let the truth unfold." In an open letter, the faculty members called on the Senate to comply with the constitutional duty to "forthwith proceed" with the trial. "Respectfully, a dismissal at this point would be deemed by the Filipino people as effectively engineered by the Senate's own delay and an abdication of its constitutional role in impeachment," it read. The faculty members also stressed that the 19th Congress should not preempt whether the trial should continue. It said this should be left to the 20th Congress. "For the Senate to decide for the 20th Congress would be undemocratic, contrary to the very rationale underlying the 'non-continuing body' argument," the letter read. The members stressed that a dismissal would mean an abandonment of the Senate's tradition as an august chamber and will alter the country's system of checks and balances. "It will also undermine the people's trust in the Senate as an independent and impartial institution before which the highest officials of the land may demonstrate and prove their fealty to the principles of accountability, public service, and democracy," it said. Duterte Youth nominee's use of different surname for 'name recall' —Cardema
The Duterte Youth party-list on Friday explained that the alleged use of its first nominee of a different surname is for 'name recall." In a statement, Duterte Youth chairperson Ronald Cardema came to the defense of Drixie Mae Cardema amid allegations on social media that she used a different family name on her Certificate of Acceptance of Nomination (CONA) for Eleksyon 2025. Reports on social media alleged that the full name of the Duterte Youth nominee was Drixie Mae Suarez and not Cardema. 'First of all, Duterte Youth Party-List Cong. Drixie Mae Suarez-Cardema is the sister of former Duterte Youth Party-List Cong. Ducielle Marie Suarez-Cardema,' said Ronald, the partylist chairperson and husband of Ducielle. 'In the start of every Congress, congressmen and senators, formally request the House and the Senate for the political names that they prefer to use for the entire Congress because name recall is key to Philippine politics,' he added. On Thursday, Commission on Elections (Comelec) chief George Erwin Garcia said the poll body's Law Department is set to issue a motu prioprio show cause order against the Duterte Youth first nominee for allegedly using a different surname on her CONA. Garcia, however, clarified the case will not affect Drixie's nomination and possible proclamation, saying there were no formal petitions filed for the cancellation of her nomination. 'Para sa amin, yan ay fact-finding muna. Hindi pa naman namin sinasabing may disqualification case o pormal na kaso, election offense, o kung ano pa man,' Garcia told reporters in a virtual interview on Friday. (For us, this is just fact-finding proceedings. We are not saying there is a disqualification or election offense case.) 'Ayaw namin pangunahan muna, ayaw namin ipre-empt ang Law Department. Kung yun ang kanilang depensa, so be it. At least kahit paano meron silang depensa nila sa paggamit ng isang family name na maaaring di yun nag family name ng naturang partylist nominee,' he added. (We don't want to preempt the Law Department. If that is the explanation of the Cardemas, then so be it.) The Comelec will likewise look into the official documents that Drixie submitted when she filed her candidacy for Eleksyon 2025 as well as her previous records, according to Garcia. It can be recalled the Duterte Youth ranked second in the partylist race for Eleksyon 2025, garnering 2.3 million votes.
