CenterPoint Energy reports solid Q2 2025 results; reiterates 2025 full year guidance; increases 10-year capital investment plan by $500MM

Business Wire24-07-2025
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--CenterPoint Energy, Inc. (NYSE: CNP) or 'CenterPoint' today reported net income of $198 million, or $0.30 per diluted share on a GAAP basis for the second quarter of 2025, compared to $0.36 per diluted share in the comparable period of 2024.
Non-GAAP EPS for the second quarter of 2025 was $0.29, versus $0.36 for the comparable quarter of 2024. These second quarter results include an unfavorable variance of $0.01 per share attributable to growth and rate recovery. This lower relative impact was driven by the timing of recoveries from interim capital mechanisms not available during recent rate case activity that is now largely completed.
Additional unfavorable items for the quarter include increased financing costs of $0.03 per share and increased operating and maintenance expense of $0.03 per share. Weather and usage were favorable, contributing $0.01 per share when compared to the second quarter of 2024.
'I'm incredibly proud of our teams as they have worked to deliver about a year and a half's worth of work since last summer as part of the Greater Houston Resiliency Initiative. We've met all of our Phase II public commitments on-time or ahead of schedule, and we are on a positive path forward as we work to build and operate the most resilient coastal grid in the nation. Our customers are already seeing the benefits with nearly 50% less outage minutes in the first six months of 2025 compared to 2024. This is great progress, and we aren't done yet,' said Jason Wells, President & CEO of CenterPoint.
'While our focus has been on resiliency, we are not losing sight of the incredible pace of diverse growth our service territories continue to experience, especially those in Texas. This year alone we have increased our capital investment plan by $5.5 billion, including the $500 million increase we announced today,' continued Wells.
'Even though we are taking a conservative approach to this growth, we continue to see an upward bias towards investment opportunities that are not yet reflected in our current plan. We believe these opportunities, combined with our ability to efficiently finance and a lighter regulatory calendar over the next few years, are strong tailwinds that we will incorporate into our refreshed 10-year plan that we're excited to share by the end of September,' said Wells.

Earnings Outlook
In addition to presenting its financial results in accordance with GAAP, including presentation of net income (loss) and diluted earnings (loss) per share, CenterPoint provides guidance based on non-GAAP income and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share. Generally, a non-GAAP financial measure is a numerical measure of a company's historical or future financial performance that excludes or includes amounts that are not normally excluded or included in the most directly comparable GAAP financial measure.
Management evaluates CenterPoint's financial performance in part based on non-GAAP income and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share. Management believes that presenting these non-GAAP financial measures enhances an investor's understanding of CenterPoint's overall financial performance by providing them with an additional meaningful and relevant comparison of current and anticipated future results across periods. The adjustments made in these non-GAAP financial measures exclude items that management believes do not most accurately reflect the company's fundamental business performance. These excluded items are reflected in the reconciliation tables of this news release, where applicable. CenterPoint's non-GAAP income and non-GAAP diluted earnings per share measures should be considered as a supplement to, and not as a substitute for, or superior to, net income and diluted earnings per share, which respectively are the most directly comparable GAAP financial measures. These non-GAAP financial measures also may be different than non-GAAP financial measures used by other companies.
2024 and 2025 non-GAAP EPS and 2025 non-GAAP EPS guidance range
2024 and 2025 non-GAAP EPS and 2025 non-GAAP EPS guidance excludes: Earnings or losses from the change in value of CenterPoint's 2.0% Zero-Premium Exchangeable Subordinated Notes due 2029 ('ZENS') and related securities; Gains, losses and impacts, including related expenses, associated with mergers and divestitures, such as the divestiture of our Louisiana and Mississippi natural gas LDC businesses; and
2025 non-GAAP EPS and 2025 non-GAAP EPS guidance also exclude impacts related to temporary emergency electric energy facilities ('TEEEF') once they are no longer part of our rate-regulated business.
In providing 2024 and 2025 non-GAAP EPS and 2025 non-GAAP EPS guidance, CenterPoint does not consider the items noted above and other potential impacts such as changes in accounting standards, impairments, or other unusual items, which could have a material impact on GAAP reported results for the applicable guidance period. The 2025 non-GAAP EPS guidance range also considers assumptions for certain significant variables that may impact earnings, such as customer growth and usage including normal weather, throughput, recovery of capital invested, effective tax rates, financing activities and related interest rates, and regulatory and judicial proceedings. To the extent actual results deviate from these assumptions, the 2025 non-GAAP EPS guidance range may not be met, or the projected annual non-GAAP EPS growth rate may change. CenterPoint is unable to present a quantitative reconciliation of forward-looking non-GAAP diluted earnings per share without unreasonable effort because changes in the value of ZENS and related securities, future impairments, and other unusual items are not estimable and are difficult to predict due to various factors outside of management's control.

Why Anheuser-Busch InBev Stock Crashed Today

Key Points Anheuser-Busch InBev reported declining volumes of beer shipped in Q2. Revenue still increased, and at least one version of earnings was up. GAAP profits fell far short of what the company calls its "underlying profit." 10 stocks we like better than Anheuser-Busch InBev/NV › Shares of Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD), the multinational beverages (specifically, beer) stock, tumbled 11.8% through 10:05 a.m. ET Thursday after the company reported declining volumes of beer shipped in the second quarter and weaker-than-expected revenue. Analysts had forecast Anheuser-Busch would earn $0.95 per share on $15.3 billion in sales. Earnings edged out expectations at $0.98, but revenue was only $15 billion. Anheuser-Busch InBev Q2 earnings Not all the news was bad. Anheuser-Busch InBev noted that actual revenue increased 3% year over year in Q2, and "normalized EBITDA" was up 6.5%, with EBITDA margins expanding to 35.3%. Reported revenue, however, was hurt by unfavorable currency exchange rates, meaning a weak U.S. dollar. That depressed real revenue growth to just 2.1%. The company said its "underlying profit" grew 7.7% to $1.95 billion, and underlying earnings per share grew 8.7% as the company bought back stock in the quarter. At Anheuser-Busch InBev, "underlying profit" basically translates as non-GAAP (adjusted) earnings, however -- and investors are treating the numbers as such. Anheuser-Busch doesn't make it easy to figure out what its actual earnings as calculated according to generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) were, but according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence, they were only $0.82 per share. Is Anheuser-Busch InBev stock a buy? And now you see why investors are upset. Whatever the "underlying" or "normalized EBITDA" numbers say, Anheuser-Busch InBev's actual profit for Q2 was 16% lower than the headline number. Granted, the stock doesn't look too expensive at just over 18 times earnings. But analysts only see the stock growing earnings at 12.5% over the next five years -- and right now, earnings are heading in the opposite direction, not growing, but shrinking. And with a trend like that, it's hard to call the stock a buy. Should you invest $1,000 in Anheuser-Busch InBev/NV right now? Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) Reports Strong Q2, Full-Year Sales Guidance is Optimistic

Biopharmaceutical company Bristol Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) announced better-than-expected revenue in Q2 CY2025, but sales were flat year on year at $12.27 billion. The company's full-year revenue guidance of $47 billion at the midpoint came in 1.6% above analysts' estimates. Its non-GAAP profit of $1.46 per share was 32.6% above analysts' consensus estimates. Is now the time to buy Bristol-Myers Squibb? Find out in our full research report. Bristol-Myers Squibb (BMY) Q2 CY2025 Highlights: Revenue: $12.27 billion vs analyst estimates of $11.38 billion (flat year on year, 7.8% beat) Adjusted EPS: $1.46 vs analyst estimates of $1.10 (32.6% beat) The company lifted its revenue guidance for the full year to $47 billion at the midpoint from $46.3 billion, a 1.5% increase Management lowered its full-year Adjusted EPS guidance to $6.50 at the midpoint, a 5.1% decrease Operating Margin: 14.5%, up from 12.8% in the same quarter last year Market Capitalization: $93.57 billion Company Overview With roots dating back to 1887 and a transformative merger in 1989 that gave the company its current name, Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) discovers, develops, and markets prescription medications for serious diseases including cancer, blood disorders, immunological conditions, and cardiovascular diseases. Revenue Growth Examining a company's long-term performance can provide clues about its quality. Any business can have short-term success, but a top-tier one grows for years. Regrettably, Bristol-Myers Squibb's sales grew at a mediocre 6.5% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years. This was below our standard for the healthcare sector and is a tough starting point for our analysis. We at StockStory place the most emphasis on long-term growth, but within healthcare, a half-decade historical view may miss recent innovations or disruptive industry trends. Bristol-Myers Squibb's recent performance shows its demand has slowed as its annualized revenue growth of 2.7% over the last two years was below its five-year trend. We can better understand the company's revenue dynamics by analyzing its most important segment, Growth Portfolio. Over the last two years, Bristol-Myers Squibb's Growth Portfolio revenue averaged 17.4% year-on-year growth. This segment has outperformed its total sales during the same period, lifting the company's performance. This quarter, Bristol-Myers Squibb's $12.27 billion of revenue was flat year on year but beat Wall Street's estimates by 7.8%. Looking ahead, sell-side analysts expect revenue to decline by 5.8% over the next 12 months, a deceleration versus the last two years. This projection is underwhelming and suggests its products and services will face some demand challenges. Software is eating the world and there is virtually no industry left that has been untouched by it. That drives increasing demand for tools helping software developers do their jobs, whether it be monitoring critical cloud infrastructure, integrating audio and video functionality, or ensuring smooth content streaming. Click here to access a free report on our 3 favorite stocks to play this generational megatrend. Operating Margin Operating margin is one of the best measures of profitability because it tells us how much money a company takes home after subtracting all core expenses, like marketing and R&D. Bristol-Myers Squibb was profitable over the last five years but held back by its large cost base. Its average operating margin of 9.1% was weak for a healthcare business. On the plus side, Bristol-Myers Squibb's operating margin rose by 6.9 percentage points over the last five years, as its sales growth gave it operating leverage. Zooming into its more recent performance, however, we can see the company's margin has decreased by 1.6 percentage points on a two-year basis. If Bristol-Myers Squibb wants to pass our bar, it must prove it can expand its profitability consistently. In Q2, Bristol-Myers Squibb generated an operating margin profit margin of 14.5%, up 1.7 percentage points year on year. This increase was a welcome development and shows it was more efficient. Earnings Per Share We track the long-term change in earnings per share (EPS) for the same reason as long-term revenue growth. Compared to revenue, however, EPS highlights whether a company's growth is profitable. Bristol-Myers Squibb's EPS grew at an unimpressive 3.2% compounded annual growth rate over the last five years, lower than its 6.5% annualized revenue growth. We can see the difference stemmed from higher interest expenses or taxes as the company actually improved its operating margin and repurchased its shares during this time. In Q2, Bristol-Myers Squibb reported adjusted EPS at $1.46, down from $2.07 in the same quarter last year. Despite falling year on year, this print easily cleared analysts' estimates. Over the next 12 months, Wall Street expects Bristol-Myers Squibb's full-year EPS of $6.73 to shrink by 5%. Key Takeaways from Bristol-Myers Squibb's Q2 Results We were impressed by how significantly Bristol-Myers Squibb blew past analysts' EPS expectations this quarter. We were also excited its revenue outperformed Wall Street's estimates by a wide margin. On the other hand, full-year EPS guidance was lowered. Zooming out, we think this was a mixed print. The market seemed to be hoping for more, and the stock traded down 3.9% to $44.21 immediately following the results. Should you buy the stock or not? We think that the latest quarter is just one piece of the longer-term business quality puzzle. Quality, when combined with valuation, can help determine if the stock is a buy. Dream Finders Homes: Riding Out the Storm

Key Points Dream Finders reported solid growth in revenue and home closings, but higher expenses weighed on earnings. The company is following its playbook through the downturn, completing two acquisitions in the quarter. Dream Finders has ample resources to be opportunistic while housing is slow, but investors shouldn't expect a turnaround until macro forces realign and home buyers return to the market. 10 stocks we like better than Dream Finders Homes › Here's our initial take on Dream Finders Homes (NYSE: DFH) financial report. Key Metrics Metric Q2 2024 Q2 2025 Change vs. Expectations Revenue $1.06 billion $1.15 billion 9% Beat Earnings per share $0.81 $0.56 (31%) Missed Home closings 2,031 2,232 10% n/a Net new orders 1,712 1,938 13% n/a Dream Finders Remains On Course Despite Difficult Market Dream Finders grew revenue by 9% and home closings by 10% in what is a difficult housing environment, but higher homebuilding cost of sales and financial services expense ate into profitability. Homebuilding gross margin fell 250 basis points to 16.5%. Elevated interest rates, an uncertain economy, and pressures from soaring costs on home building supplies and labor have created what CEO Patrick Zalupski called "perhaps the most challenging environment in the past three years." Dream Finders continues to execute on its plan despite the downturn. In the quarter, the company closed deals for Alliant National Title Insurance Co. and Green River Builders, bringing its total to 10 acquisitions in the past six years. Alliant opens up new revenue sources, while Green River expands Dream Finders' presence in the fast-growing Atlanta area. The company also repurchased more than 700,000 shares for $16 million during the period. Immediate Market Reaction Investors knew going in that this was a tough housing market, and the results had little impact on sentiment. Dream Finders stock is down about 1% in early Thursday trading. What to Watch The big question facing homebuilders is when the housing market will turn. On Wednesday, the Federal Reserve held rates steady, and the odds of a September rate cut fell slightly, opening up the possibility of higher for longer on interest rates. Dream Finders ended the quarter with a backlog of 2,513 homes valued at $1.2 billion and reiterated its guidance for about 9,250 home closings in 2025. If the market remains weak, expect the company to continue to hunt for acquisition candidates in its core Sun Belt markets in anticipation of an eventual turnaround. The company cannot control the macro environment, and it is unlikely to see oversized growth until buyers return. But Dream Finders appears to be holding serve in a difficult climate, which is about the best investors can hope for for now.
