Security Double Standard? Young Consumers Reuse Passwords, Expect Businesses to Be Fort Knox

TEMPE, Ariz., July 16, 2025 /3BL/ -- A new GoDaddy (NYSE: GDDY) survey reveals a surprising paradox among younger consumers: while Gen Z and Millennials appear less concerned about protecting themselves online, they have little tolerance for businesses that fall short on security.
In the latest GoDaddy Consumer Pulse* survey of 1,500 U.S. consumers, 42% of Gen Z and 40% of Millennial respondents admit they would not immediately change their passwords or credit card information after being notified of a data breach at a business they use—if they act at all. In contrast, 72% of Gen X and Boomers would take immediate action.
Meanwhile, these same younger consumers are the first to walk away when a business fails to protect their data.
Consumers assess business credibility with a fine-tooth combMost consumers (68%) surveyed expect small businesses to maintain the same level of digital security as large corporations or better.
A website with misspelled or grammatically incorrect words, broken links, a poor design, slow load times, or an unfriendly mobile user experience rank among the top five red flags that deter consumer purchases.
However, younger generations find a few things more concerning than older shoppers:
'With younger consumers, you might not get more than one chance to earn their trust,' said Dennis Smith, director of security go-to-market at GoDaddy. 'They assume some risk but expect businesses to take responsibility for keeping their data safe. If small businesses don't invest in a secure, professional online presence and clearly demonstrate to their customers how they're protecting their data, these younger shoppers will take their business elsewhere.'
Consumers lack cybersecurity hygieneAlthough more than 1 in 3 (38%) consumers report they have been a victim of identity theft in the past, people across all generations have quite relaxed security habits.
The majority of consumers (61%) repeat passwords across their various accounts—a habit slightly more common among Gen Z and Millennials compared to Gen X and Boomers. Notably, 69% of consumers also do not check if a website has a secure padlock icon before making online purchases.
Personal risk is perceived as inevitableThe findings suggest a growing sense of cybersecurity fatigue among consumers. While 65% of all consumers say they're more concerned about online security than they were five years ago, a small subset of younger consumers (21% of Gen Z and 16% of Millennials) report being less concerned than they were five years ago, compared to 7% of Gen X and Boomers.
Meanwhile, the majority (67%) of consumers believe that their personal information is already on the dark web.
'The data points to classic signs of consumers feeling overwhelmed,' said Smith. 'Businesses that can step in to take security concerns off consumers' plates will build deep loyalty, while those that ignore or downplay security risks will forfeit long–term growth.'
What can small businesses do?The survey found consumers are more likely to remain loyal to businesses that respond to breaches with transparency and extend support to their customers.
There are some simple, cost-effective changes small businesses can implement to improve consumers' perception of their business. For example, they can test that their website loads quickly and renders well across Apple and Android mobile devices. Or they can upgrade to an email address that matches their business's domain name, if they don't already use one.
To help small businesses protect their website, GoDaddy offers a suite of security solutions—from Website Security firewall bundles to a range of SSL certificates and Managed SSL plans. These tools, paired with sound security practices, can help businesses of every size meet rising consumer expectations.

Why D-Wave Quantum Stock Skyrocketed 74.3% in the First Half of 2025 -- and What Comes Next

Key Points D-Wave Quantum stock saw some big swings across the stretch, but it managed to post huge gains in this year's first half. The launch of the company's Advantage2 quantum computing system helped power a massive rally for the stock. D-Wave stock has continued to rally early in 2025's second half and is now up approximately 1,230% over the last year. 10 stocks we like better than D-Wave Quantum › D-Wave Quantum (NYSE: QBTS) stock closed out 2025's first half with big gains. The quantum computing specialist's share price surged 74.3% across the stretch, according to data from S&P Global Market Intelligence. Over the same period, the S&P 500 index rose 5.5%. Despite some huge volatility in this year's first half, D-Wave Quantum's valuation rocketed higher thanks to some big announcements and increasing optimism surrounding the outlook for quantum computing technologies. The stock has also continued to climb early in the second half of 2025, and it's now up roughly 1,230% over the last year. D-Wave Quantum's impressive rally continued in 2025's first half After soaring 854% across last year's trading, D-Wave Quantum stock saw some volatility early in 2025's trading. The stock saw a big pullback after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that expectations for very useful quantum computers arriving within the next 15 years were probably optimistic, but its share price saw a big rally in March after Huang indicated that he was wrong about his previous timeline for the trajectory of the technology. On May 20, D-Wave published a press release announcing that its 4,400+ qubit Advantage2 annealing quantum computer had been made available for commercial customers. The Advantage2 is capable of handling processing problems that are virtually impossible with traditional computers, and news the company had begun selling the systems helped spur a huge rally for the stock. What's next for D-Wave Quantum? With gains of 15.5% across July's trading so far, D-Wave Quantum stock has continued to be red hot early in this year's second half. Strong gains and new stock sales have pushed the company's market capitalization up to $5.3 billion, and the company is now valued at approximately 217 times this year's expected sales. D-Wave Quantum has a promising early position in the quantum computing space and could be able to tap into massive growth opportunities ahead. On the other hand, charting how the quantum-computing industry will unfold involves a tremendous amount of guesswork. While it's possible that D-Wave Quantum and other specialized players in the category will emerge as big winners over the long term, there's also significant competitive risk from larger, more resource-rich tech giants including Alphabet, IBM, and Microsoft. In the near term, D-Wave stock is likely to see high levels of volatility -- although there could be strong bullish support for its stock if it turns out that the Federal Reserve will issue multiple interest rate cuts this year. On a business-specific level, the company's next quarterly report is shaping up to be a very interesting one and could spur big moves for the stock. The report should provide investors with a look at the level of demand that D-Wave is seeing for its Advantage2 systems and offer some insight on what's next in the company's tech pipeline. Elevance Health Hit By Medicaid Troubles, Trims Outlook

Elevance Health Inc. (NYSE:ELV) shares plummeted nearly 12% on Thursday after the health insurer reported second-quarter 2025 adjusted earnings that missed analyst expectations and significantly lowered its full-year guidance, overshadowing strong revenue growth. The company reported second-quarter 2025 revenues of $49.42 billion, up 14.3% year over year, higher than the consensus of $48.34 billion. The increase was driven by higher premium yields in the Health Benefits segment, recently closed acquisitions, and growth in Medicare Advantage membership, partially offset by membership attrition in the Medicaid Health reported adjusted earnings of $8.84 per share, missing the consensus of $9.20. The benefit expense ratio was 88.9%, an increase of 260 basis points year over year, reflecting higher medical cost trend primarily in Medicaid business and ACA health plans. The operating expense ratio was 10.1 percent, an improvement of 160 basis points. The adjusted operating expense ratio was 10%, an improvement of 140 basis points, primarily driven by expense leverage associated with growth in operating revenue and ongoing expense discipline as the company prioritizes investments to support long-term strategy. View more earnings on ELV Health Benefits segment operating revenue was $41.6 billion in the second quarter of 2025, up 12% compared to the prior year quarter, driven primarily by higher premium yields, recently closed acquisitions, and growth in Medicare Advantage membership, partially offset by lower Medicaid membership. Medical membership totaled approximately 45.6 million, a decline of 212 thousand from the first quarter of 2025, driven by lower Medicaid membership and attrition resulting from lower effectuation rates in Individual ACA business. Operating revenue for Carelon was $18.1 billion, up 36%, driven by recent acquisitions in home health and pharmacy services, growth in CarelonRx product revenue, and the scaling of risk-based capabilities in Carelon Services. Guidance Elevance Health lowered its fiscal year 2025 adjusted earnings guidance from $34.15-$34.85 per share to approximately $30, versus the consensus of $34.40. 'We are updating our outlook to reflect elevated medical cost trends in ACA and slower rate alignment in Medicaid. While the external environment continues to evolve, we are focused on the areas within our control – managing healthcare costs, deploying targeted investments in advanced technology and value-based care delivery, and reinforcing the operational foundation that supports long-term value creation,' said Gail Boudreaux, President and CEO, in a statement on Thursday. Industry Context and Peer Impact This guidance shock from Elevance Health follows a similar move by Centene Corp (NYSE:CNC). Centene recently withdrew its entire 2025 GAAP and adjusted diluted EPS guidance. This decision by Centene was prompted by its initial review of 2025 industry data from Wakely, an independent actuarial firm. Centene's analysis indicated lower-than-anticipated market growth and significantly higher implied market morbidity (prevalence of illness) in their Health Insurance Marketplace states, leading to a substantial reduction in their expected risk adjustment revenue transfer. These events highlight a broader industry concern among health insurers regarding elevated medical costs and challenges in accurately predicting risk and pricing in government-sponsored programs like Medicaid and the ACA.
