New AI committee to guide digital future of Oman
Muscat – Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT) has formed a national committee of artificial intelligence specialists from both the public and private sectors to advance the sultanate's AI agenda in line with Oman Vision 2040 and the country's digital transformation strategy.
The committee has been tasked with guiding national efforts to integrate AI into key sectors such as education, healthcare, logistics, finance and public services. Acting as a national think tank, it will provide expert insights on emerging AI technologies and their practical applications in addressing real-world challenges.
A ministry official said the committee's responsibilities include advising the government on AI policies, developing education and training programmes, and reviewing existing legislation related to AI. The committee will also recommend measures to enhance Omani expertise in AI, propose updates to regulatory frameworks, and monitor global AI developments to assess their impact on the sultanate.
A significant part of its mandate involves addressing the ethical aspects of AI, including guidelines for transparency, accountability and data protection. These guidelines will reflect Omani cultural values while aligning with international standards.
In addition, the committee will shape frameworks for AI-related education and research collaborations with international institutions. It will also identify sectors with high potential for AI-driven economic diversification and prepare strategic roadmaps to support public-private partnerships aimed at accelerating AI adoption in the sultanate.
The committee is expected to evaluate potential risks, such as algorithmic bias and misuse of personal data, to promote responsible innovation and safeguard society.
Chaired by Dr Ahmed Saeed al Ma'ashari, Assistant Professor at College of Engineering in Sultan Qaboos University, committee members include Ibrahim Abdullah al Hosni from Oman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Ghada Nasser al Kharousi from Central Bank of Oman, Mahmoud Nasser al Nafei from Invospark, Dr Riyadh Abdul Aziz al Balushi from Decree Company, Dr Younis Saeed al Anqoudi from Transom Handling, and Tawwa Abdullah al Dawood from MTCIT.
Formation of the committee comes as Oman seeks to position AI as a cornerstone of its National Digital Economy Programme. MTCIT aims to improve and unify the country's AI efforts under a coordinated national strategy, ensuring Oman is well-prepared to leverage future technologies while managing related risks responsibly.

The event brought together university leadership, faculty, families and guests to recognise the achievements of a graduating class representing 47 nationalities. Sheikha Bodour and AUS Chancellor Dr Tod Laursen each delivered a commencement address, sharing messages of pride, perseverance and purpose. Sheikha Bodour said, 'Through determination and tenacity, our graduates leave AUS equipped with firstly academic credentials they can be proud of, but also with the courage to ask tough questions, the empathy to lead with care, and the vision to shape a world of progress and humanity. As they step into the uncertainty of the future, I have every confidence they will adapt, lead with purpose and compassion, and that their decisions will be anchored in highest values of AUS and of Sharjah.' Chancellor Laursen added, 'This graduating class reflects the very essence of our mission-empowering students with the academic strength, ethical grounding and global perspective needed to navigate and lead in a rapidly changing world. We are proud to see them leave AUS not just with degrees, but with the confidence, curiosity and resilience that will define their contribution to society.' Guest speaker Emi Mahmoud, a poet, activist and UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador, addressed the graduating class with a powerful reflection on resilience and purpose. A Yale graduate, Mahmoud is internationally recognised for her spoken-word poetry and humanitarian work, using her platform to advocate for peace, education and climate justice. A seasoned finance executive with more than 20 years of experience in high-growth technology companies, Derdeyn joins Forcepoint's executive team as the company scales adoption of its recently launched Data Security Cloud, a complete, AI-powered data security platform uniting visibility and control of data everywhere it's created, stored or moved. Derdeyn brings extensive expertise in strategic finance, mergers and business transformation across both public and private equity-backed companies. He most recently served as CFO at Archer Technologies, where he led Archer through a double carve-out from Dell Technologies and RSA Security LLC, its immediate parent, and through a successful multi-billion dollar sale process while simultaneously accelerating organic growth into the double digits. His previous roles include CFO of LionTree and EVP/CFO of Answers Corporation, where he was instrumental in leading a marketing SaaS rollup through multiple acquisitions, and taking point on a dual path IPO/sale process which resulted in a strategic sale to APAX Partners. 'Matt's proven track record in building high-performance finance organisations, navigating complex capital structures and accelerating growth makes him the right leader to help fuel Forcepoint's growth', said Ryan Windham, CEO of Forcepoint.
