Scotsman5 hours ago

The Edinburgh Fringe is fast-approaching, with plenty of famous faces such as Miriam Margolyes and Bill Bailey set to appear during the 2025 festival.
Taking place across 265 venues, there are already more than three-thousand shows lined-up for August and searching for shows can quickly become overwhelming.
But if you are looking for an easy place to begin, sometimes it is easier to start with what - or who - you already know. There are top comedians such as Alan Davies and Nish Kumar set to appear, as well as reality TV show winners like Hannah Byczkowski from The Traitors, or Scotland's own Peter Sawkins from the Great British Bake Off.
David Hayman and Pete Doherty are among British celebrities with shows at this year's Fringe. There are then American sitcom stars such as Caroline Rhea and Eden Sher putting on their own shows, in addition to multihyphenate performers including Nick Mohammed, Eunice Olumide MBE, and The Ballad of Wallis Island's Tim Key.
There is a huge variety to the shows on offer during the Fringe and this list teases just a fraction of the entertainment which will be available in August. But if you are hoping to be inspired - or just looking for some general guidance - here are 36 famous faces with shows at the 2025 Edinburgh Fringe.

Taron Egerton knew he just had to play 'fascinating' and 'disturbing' new TV role

Taron Egerton knew he just had to play 'fascinating' and 'disturbing' new TV role Taron Egerton stars as an arson investigator in the new Apple TV+ series, Smoke, which is inspired by the true crime story of a serial arsonist who set fire to businesses in Southern California The Welsh actor is said to have taken on a role in the new series Smoke without prior knowledge of the true crime it's based on. (Image: Getty Images ) Welsh actor Taron Egerton is said to have taken on a role in the new series Smoke without prior knowledge of the true crime it's based on. The Apple TV+ nine-part series draws from the 2021 podcast Firebug by Truth Media, which delves into the story of a serial arsonist who targeted businesses in Southern California during the '80s and '90s. In the series, Egerton plays Dave, an arson investigator who teams up with detective Michelle Calderone, played by Jurnee Smollett to apprehend two elusive serial arsonists he's been pursuing for months. ‌ Before filming began, the actor admitted to the Radio Times that he was unaware of the "disturbing" real events that inspired Dennis Lehane's series and hadn't listened to Firebug before he agreed to the role. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter . ‌ The actor who grew up in Aberystwyth had said that he had found many aspects of the case not only disturbing but also perplexing due to the bizarre nature of the arsonist's actions. Taron saw it as a significant challenge to combine these peculiarities into a single, believable character. He shared: "I think that's really true of the show. It's a real juggle, sort of trying to figure out who Dave is and who the other characters in the show are as well, because no one is very easily squeezed into a box." Taron was enthused about the project right from the start, eager to work with his Blackbird showrunner Lehane again and delve into the complexities of what he described as a "fascinating" character marked by a flawed sense of heroism. Article continues below He explained to the Radio Times: "I was actually pretty sure I was gonna do it before I read the script because [Dennis and I] started talking about it when we were still shooting Blackbird "So it's been a long time in the works. But when he did finally send me the first couple of scripts, god, I was so excited." ‌ Taking on the role of Dave seemed like uncharted territory for the actor. He said: "It's a fascinating role, he's so unlike anything that I've ever been asked to play before, and actually, in a lot of ways, really unlike anything that I've seen on TV before. "He's not split personality, but he has somehow compartmentalised who he is in a way that's really strange, and if you have an insight into what's going on behind closed doors, it's really quite disturbing. "Dave is somebody who would style himself as a hero and as just a regular Joe who's trying to save the day. ‌ "On the surface of things, that doesn't seem that unnerving, but anyone in real life who would describe themself as a hero is probably someone I'd think was a little bit weird. And Dave is definitely more than a little bit weird." Taron hinted that as the series unfolds, Dave gains more insight into his identity and purpose, yet he cautioned that it's sometimes a disconcerting journey for the audience. (Image: 2025 Getty Images ) On Monday, June 23 Lana Del Rey kicked off her UK and Ireland tour in Cardiff's Principality Stadium. She stepped out on to "one of the most detailed and distinctive sets", which consisted a full Southern-style house sat in the centre, surrounded by a swamp-like set with greenery, a willow tree, and soft fairy lights. Very Lana. The show had mixed reviews from fans as some criticised the length of the set and questioned its suitability for a stadium venue, while others "loved it". The night was filled with tears from both the crowd and the singer as she declared, "I truly love you Cardiff." ‌ Lana has since taken to social media to share her love for the country, and thanking the audience for "showing out for our first show." One person said: "i loved it girl wouldn't wanna be anywhere else." Another added: "the set is so beautiful. can't wait to see the rest of the tour." The singer is celebrated for chart-topping tracks such as Summertime Sadness, Born to Die, Video Games, and Young and Beautiful, graced Wales with her presence for the first time, despite her infrequent UK shows. ‌ Before the concert, speculation was rife amongst her fanbase, with some doubting whether she would perform at all. However, their concerns were alleviated when they spotted the songstress post-rehearsal the previous night, where she warmly engaged with fans who serenaded her with Happy Birthday, celebrating her recent 40th. Despite the buzz, the star's latest spectacle seems to have slightly missed the mark for some attendees. A common grievance was her tardiness, arriving just shy of 9pm, reminiscent of her Glastonbury stint two years prior when she faced a mic cut-off for being half an hour late, attributing the delay to her hair preparations. Some concertgoers expressed frustration with the length of the performance, citing the 1 hour and 20 minute-long show as underwhelming for a stadium event, especially when compared to artists like Taylor Swift and Beyoncé who often perform for over three hours. You can read more here. Article continues below On X, one fan wrote: "Lana Del Rey that Cardiff concert was SO crap. 1h20min concert with Lana hiding behind the stage for 20 min while playback plays." Tickets are still available for the rest of the UK tour on Ticketmaster. Lana Del Rey will be performing in Scotland, Liverpool and Dublin before the tour comes to a close under the Wembley arches on July 4.
