Guerrero hits 2 doubles and scores twice as the AL-best Blue Jays beat the slumping Tigers 6-2
The American League-leading Blue Jays are 7-1 since the All-Star break, while the Tigers have lost five straight and 11 of 12.
José Berríos (7-4) picked up the win, giving up two runs on five hits and two walks in six innings.
Keider Montero (4-3) took the loss, allowing six runs on nine hits in four-plus innings.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead in the second when Wenceel Pérez singled, stole second and scored on Dillon Dingler's double.
Addison Barger's RBI double made it 1-1 in the fourth and he scored with two outs on a throwing error by Javier Báez.
The Blue Jays then took control with a four-run fifth. Nathan Lukes and George Springer started the inning with singles, and Guerrero hit an RBI double. Bo Bichette's two-run double made it 5-1 and Alejandro Kirk's single off reliever Tyler Holton gave Toronto a five-run lead.
Spencer Torkelson's 23rd homer of the season pulled the Tigers within 6-2 in the sixth.

Four Clemson football starters named to preseason watch list for 2025 Lombardi Award
More preseason honors rolled in for four Clemson football starters Tuesday. Defensive linemen T.J. Parker and Peter Woods were named to the preseason Lombardi Award watch list, as were linebacker Sammy Brown and offensive tackle Blake Miller. The Lombardi Award annually recognizes the nation's best down lineman on either offense or defense "who best embodies the character, discipline, and excellence of NFL Hall of Fame head coach Vince Lombardi, while also demonstrating outstanding performance and ability on the field." Clemson tied the Alabama Crimson Tide and Texas Longhorns for programs with the most players named to the 2025 Lombardi watch list. It's the latest in a string of preseason accolades for the four Tigers. Woods was named to the Walter Camp Player of the Year watch list, as was senior quarterback Cade Klubnik. The 6-foot-3, 315-pound defensive tackle was also named to the preseason watch lists for the Nagurski Trophy, Bednarik Award and Outland Trophy. Woods enters his junior season after playing in 11 games (10 starts) a year ago. He had 28 tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and a forced fumble as a sophomore. In two seasons at Clemson, Woods has recorded 54 tackles (31 solo), 11 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles over 23 games. Parker, the Tigers' 6-foot-3, 265-pound edge rusher, started all 14 games last season and has played in all 27 games since his freshman season in 2023. He had 57 tackles (35 solo) and had 11 sacks, 19.5 tackles for loss, and six forced fumbles to go with two fumble recoveries in 2024. Parker was also named to the Nagurski Trophy and and Bednarik Award watch lists. Brown, a 6-foot-2, 235-pound linebacker, is coming off a true freshman season in which he played in 12 games (six starts) and made 80 tackles with 11.5 tackles for loss and five sacks. He was previously named to the preseason Butkus Award watch list along with senior Wade Woodaz. Miller is set to enter his fourth season as an anchor of the offensive line and was previously named to the Outland Trophy watch list. The 6-foot-6, 315-pound lineman has started all 41 games for the Tigers at right tackle since his freshman season in 2022. ‘He's done a heck of a job': Chicago White Sox hitting coach Marcus Thames on Colson Montgomery
Colson Montgomery focused on line drives as part of his one-on-one sessions with Chicago White Sox director of hitting Ryan Fuller during the couple of weeks in late April/early May while at the team's Arizona complex. 'First thing we kind of went to, we wanted to practice trying to keep the ball kind of low to the ground, line drives and things like that,' Montgomery said Monday. 'Some of my cues in the cage, I'm trying to hit a low line drive to the shortstop. Keeps me tighter to the ball. Not really a normal home run swing. 'I feel like a lot of the hitters can tell you, if they tried doing home run swings, it's probably not going to work.' The shortstop's approach has been working at the big-league level. Montgomery homered to right field in the fifth inning of Monday's 2-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers at Rate Field. It was his 10th home run since being called up from Triple-A Charlotte on July 4. All 10 home runs have come since the All-Star break. 'He's having fun,' Sox hitting coach Marcus Thames said last week in Seattle. 'When he got here, we're doing the same routine he was doing when he was in Triple A. And now it's just a game-planning part of things, of him learning what pitchers are trying to do to him. 'He's done a heck of a job, he has. And he's just got to keep working, just knowing that the opposing team is going to make adjustments and that he's got to make adjustments. That's just part of the game. But I like where he's at right now. He's holding his own on both sides of the baseball.' Thames recently discussed some of the second-half production for the Sox. Kyle Teel and Edgar Quero became the sixth pair of catchers in major-league history to record four hits in back-to-back games. Teel accomplished the feat on July 23 against the Tampa Bay Rays at George M. Steinbrenner Field. Quero followed on July 25 against the Chicago Cubs at Rate Field. Teel, who had two hits Monday, entered Tuesday hitting .260 with two home runs and 12 RBIs in 41 games. The switch-hitting Quero is batting .268 — .374 against left-handed pitchers — with three home runs and 26 RBIs in 74 games. 'For those guys being young guys (and) their first time up here, being able to handle a pitching staff and on the offensive side of things, I think they're wise beyond their years,' Thames said. 'Both of them have always hit, even in the minor leagues they hit. Nothing has really changed for them. 'Both of them bring something really positive to the ballclub. Offensively, they're not afraid. And that's what I like about them. Even in our meetings, usually you get younger guys and in our hitters' meeting, they don't say much. But these guys, they speak up, and they talk about what they've seen, and I think that's kudos to those guys with where they're at in their career.' Infielder Curtis Mead is in a new stage of his career after being traded to the Sox from the Rays at the trade deadline on July 31. The first steps from Thames with the new addition included asking questions. 'Give me a couple cues that make you tick,' Thames said. 'And make sure we're watching that. And then if we see something, we'll let him know. But we want guys to be themselves. 'Overall, watching stuff when he was in Tampa and when he was in the minor leagues. He can use the whole field. But usually just try to work off of him and then if we see something, we'll address it.' Center fielder Luis Robert Jr. did not get dealt at the trade deadline and continued a 23-game on-base streak, which ended on Friday. He slashed .359/.427/.577 with five home runs, 15 RBIs and 19 runs during the stretch. 'When Luis is staying inside the baseball and driving the ball to the big part of the field, that's when he's at his best,' Thames said. 'And he's sticking with it. His timing is better. And I think that's why we're seeing some success with Luis. He's a talented player. I said that even when he was struggling, it was just a matter of time for him getting going.' The Sox as a whole are going in the right direction from a power perspective. The team leads the majors with 41 home runs since the All-Star break. Thames sees a group that's been on the attack. 'Teams that slug, they swing,' Thames said. 'You've got to be on the attack and be ready to go.' The Sox reinstated infielder Miguel Vargas from the 10-day injured list, one of four roster moves announced Tuesday afternoon. The team also designated outfielder Corey Julks for assignment, selected the contract of pitcher Yoendrys Gómez from Charlotte and optioned pitcher Elvis Peguero to Charlotte. Vargas retroactively went on the injured list on Aug. 2 with a left oblique strain. 'He's just been solid for us all year, somebody that you trust offensively, constructing good at-bats, defensively, on the bases,' manager Will Venable said on Tuesday. 'He's a team leader, somebody that we've missed and excited to have back.'

New York Yankees vs. Minnesota Twins: Carlos Rodón vs. Travis Adams
As I said yesterday, there may be no tonic like the Minnesota Twins, or perhaps no mask for what ails the Yankees like the team they've dominated for pretty well the entire century. New York took care of business yesterday in the series opener, and will look for Carlos Rodón to set them up for a series sweep with a win in game two tonight. Rodón has had a bumpy month, with a 4.95 ERA over his last four outings, all of them coming after being named to the AL's All-Star team. He's averaged exactly five innings a start over that stretch, and we saw last night with Will Warren's outing the relief — no pun intended — getting into the sixth inning (let alone the seventh) has on the rest of the pitching staff. Another strong start that sees the bullpen need to get fewer than 12 outs would be welcome, both to conserve some arms and as a sign that Carlos is on one. Travis Adams has bounced around the Twins' minor league system for a few years before finally getting the call onto the MLB roster in July. He's only made one career start to this point, a five-inning, two-run performance against the Tigers. He's been used as a long man and 'follower' for the Twins, but has been slapped around in many of those appearances. The Yankees are facing another guy they could jump all over, and should. Austin Wells, the league's worst hitter since July 11th, will be on the bench for the second straight game, and Ben Rice has taken his slot behind the plate. Indeed, the lineup is exactly the same as it was for Monday night's win, and after we got good results, why not run it back?
