Udangudi power plants in Thoothukudi to be commissioned by the end of 2025: T.N. Electricity Minister
The first of the two 660-megawatt (MW) power plants being constructed at Udangudi in Thoothukudi district would be commissioned by July, with the second likely to be commissioned in October this year, said Electricity Minister V. Senthilbalaji in the Assembly on Tuesday (April 22, 2025).
Speaking during the demand for grants for the Electricity Department, he said more than 91% of the work in the Udangudi power project (2x660 MW) had been completed.
He said the North Chennai Thermal Power Station (NCTPS) Stage 3 project with a capacity of 800 MW, which was initiated by former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi, was commissioned and inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on March 7, 2024. The power plant has produced 1,2283 million units. Similarly, 60% of the work on the Ennore SEZ power project, comprising two 660-MW power stations, has been completed, and it is expected to be commissioned by March 2026.
In response to criticism over power tariff hike, Mr. Senthilbalaji said that during the last AIADMK regime, the tariff was increased thrice — 37% in 2012, 3.57% in 2013, and 16% in 2016, and was reduced by 4% in 2017.
In the renewable energy segment for the fiscal 2024-25, 2,786 MW of solar and wind projects were commissioned, with the State being the leader in the renewable energy generation having a total installed capacity of 27,736.56 MW. Also, the Electricity Department achieved the highest target of hydroelectric generation of 4,329 MW fixed by the Central Electricity Authority, the Minister said.
He added that when Mr. Stalin took over the reins, the total installed capacity of power generation was 32,595 MW, and within four years, it had increased to 39,770 MW.
Mr. Senthilbalaji said the State's electricity demand had gone past the 20,000-MW mark, touching an all-time high of 20,830 MW in 2024-25, with the total electricity consumers standing at 3.44 crore. The highest demand in 2020-21 was 16,481 MW.

AIADMK accuses Rangasamy government of announcing welfare schemes without budgeting for funds for implementation
AIADMK State Secretary A. Anbalagan has accused the Rangasamy government of announcing populist schemes without budgeting for the financial means to implement them. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Anbalagan contended that several welfare measures announced in the last Budget session aimed at the weaker sections and the student community remained only on paper. He cited as examples some of the announcements made by Chief Minister N. Rangasamy such as the proposal to raise monthly assistance for an estimated 70,000 Below Poverty Line families from ₹1,000 to ₹1,500 that entailed an annual additional outgo of about ₹126 crore and another scheme to provide ₹1,000 monthly assistance to over a lakh women who remain outside the umbrella of any government support that was expected to cost the exchequer an estimated ₹120 crore additionally each year. Likewise, the government had proposed to raise the old age pension by ₹500 for 1.81 lakh beneficiaries at an additional financial burden of ₹108.6 crore per year while proposed increases in educational aid for children of fishermen and the differently-abled, marriages and funerals were projected to cost at least ₹400 crore annually, the AIADMK leader said. He wondered whether these empty promises were made only on paper over governance failures to tap revenue or plugging revenue leakages and with the sole intention of hoodwinking voters ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections. Mr. Anbalagan also flayed the decision to raise liquor prices to increase revenue as it would further burden consumers. Instead, the government should have opted for reforms in the excise sector that had potential to net about ₹750 crore in additional revenue, he said.

Assam pushed back 330 ‘foreigners', says CM Himanta Sarma
GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday informed the Assembly that the state had pushed back 330 illegal immigrants over the past few months. 'We have pushed back nearly 330 people, and none have returned. This exercise will be intensified,' he said during a special one-day session. He added that the government must be more active and proactive to safeguard Assam in light of the infiltration of 'Pakistani elements and Bangladeshi fundamentalists' into the state. 'The state government has decided to enforce the Illegal Expulsion Act of 1950. People identified as foreigners by the district commissioners (DCs) will be expelled without referring their cases to the Foreigners' Tribunal,' Sarma explained. Sarma said a constitutional bench of the Supreme Court had recently ruled that the Illegal Expulsion Act is in force and the government can proceed under its provisions. The minority-based opposition party, the All India United Democratic Front, recently petitioned Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, protesting what it described as 'continued' harassment of Indian Muslims under the guise of apprehending 'so-called illegal foreigners' in Assam.
