Jaisalmer rly stn nears completion of Rs 140cr world-class redevelopment
Jaisalmer: The Jaisalmer railway station, a crucial hub for both tourism and military movement in western Rajasthan, is undergoing a major transformation under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
With an investment of Rs 140 crore, redevelopment work is in its final stages, with nearly 90% completed, officials said Wednesday.
According to Shashi Kiran, chief public relations officer of North-Western Railways, the project under the guidance of general manager Amitabh, is rapidly progressing and will soon offer world-class amenities to over 35,000 passengers travelling daily.
The new main station building (G+2) spans 8,327 square metre, blending traditional Rajasthani architecture and modernity.
A spacious circulating area and a fully air-conditioned 1,008 sq m concourse has been constructed, with 480 sq m dedicated to commercial outlets. This will ensure smooth passenger flow and enhanced convenience.
Two new foot overbridges, each six-metre wide, are being built for easy movement across platforms, supported by 10 lifts and 10 escalators. All three platforms spread over 10,000 sq m are being covered to offer protection from extreme weather.

Set in the heart of the Golden city, the upgraded station, will feature separate entry and exit points, modern waiting rooms, an executive lounge, food courts, a shopping complex, and ample parking. Facilities for differently-abled individuals, digital signage, baggage scanners, metal detectors, coach guidance boards, and train indicators are being installed for added safety and ease of navigation.
The green infrastructure is a key component of the upgrade. The station will have a 900 kVA solar panel system, rainwater harvesting, solid waste management, and an advanced firefighting system. To support the rise in electric vehicle use, six EV charging points are also being installed.
The redevelopment has been designed with a 50-year vision, aiming to position Jaisalmer not just as a gateway to the Thar but also as a modern transport landmark. Authorities are expecting to complete the project soon.

Tolly problem a civil dispute: State to HC
Kolkata: In an appeal in the Tollywood directors' issue, where fresh representations were directed to the secretary of the information and cultural affairs department by the single bench of the Calcutta High Court, the state moved a division bench, claiming it to be a "civil dispute among trade unions" with no state role in it. A group of Tollywood directors had filed multiple contempt cases, alleging despite the court's order on April 3, the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers Eastern India (FCTWEI) continued to interfere. The senior standing counsel representing the state said the problem was between private entities and no grievance was against the state. So, it could not be dealt with under Article 226 of the Constitution, which gave power to high courts to issue writs for enforcing fundamental rights.
