Leo Varadkar slams Keir Starmer over Kneecap comments

Leo Varadkar has hit out at Keir Starmer, admitting he initially thought the British Prime Minister's calls for Kneecap to be pulled from Glastonbury were a 'gag.'
The Belfast rap trio are set to play the West Host Stage on Saturday at 4pm, with the BBC broadcasting the festival for those who can't make it.
Last week, Kemi Badenoch called on the BBC not to stream the band's set, while PM Starmer has since called on the band to be completely pulled from the line-up. Speaking to The Sun, Starmer said it isn't 'appropriate' for the band to play amid an ongoing court case.
It comes after Kneecap's Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh appeared in a London court on a terrorism charge last week after he is alleged to have displayed a Hezbollah flag during a live performance in the UK in November, 2024.
The 27-year-old was granted unconditional bail and is set to appear in court again on August 20, when legal arguments will be addressed. View this post on Instagram

On Sunday, the band shared a clip of The Sun article where Starmer called on the band to be axed from Glastonbury, responding: 'You know what's 'not appropriate' Kier?
'Arming a f****ng genocide…'
The post was flooded with comments of agreement with singer Paloma Faith and musician Example both showing their support for Kneecap.
Former Fine Gael leader and Taoiseach Leo also weighed in on the British PM's comments, stating that he initially thought they were 'a gag'.
Varadkar said: 'No longer hold office nor have any mandate so my views don't count for so much anymore. I get that.
'But I really thought this was some sort of gag. It's the role of artists to be avant-garde, inappropriate, challenging, disruptive — from James Joyce to Sex Pistols and Playboy.
'Politicians should really not try to censor this. If an offence was committed, let the courts decide. In the meantime, the rule of the law says the accused is innocent until proven guilty.'

New York's No.1 attraction on TripAdvisor has opened in the UK – and I was one of the first to visit

'YOU'D make a great surveillance officer. Have you ever considered joining the FBI?' It's not every day you hear those words. But then again, this isn't your average day out. 10 SPYGAMES test your physical abilities and spy stealth Credit: Jenna Stevens I was deep inside SPYSCAPE, a new First opening in New York, it is one of the top ranked attractions in the city and if you've ever fancied yourself the next Designed with help from ex-British Intelligence and leading psychologists, SPYSCAPE (and its adrenaline-pumping sibling, SPYGAMES) makes for an all-round exhilarating physical and mental challenge. It's part team games, part Read more on UK attractions Whilst SPYGAMES tests your reflexes in physical team challenges, SPYSCAPE analyses your mind, assigning you the spy role that best suits you. By the end of the afternoon, I'd walk away with my own personalised spy profile - revealing exactly what kind of secret agent I'd make. I kicked off my mission with SPYGAMES, where teams of 2-5 people battle it out across a range of heart-racing physical and mind-bending challenges. After strapping on my interactive wristband and creating my spy avatar (a cute cartoon version of me), my partner and I joined forces to create our gaming squad. Most read in News Travel As we headed down the corridor illuminated by neon lights, what followed was a series of physical challenges that burned enough energy to have me ditching the evening gym sesh. My speed and response time were my best skills, but it turns out I'm more stealth than strategist. My foresight cracked under time pressure, and let's just say my score didn't make the leaderboards… But I soon bounced back with Peak Protocol . This was a full-body stealth and agility test that had me scaling walls like Tom Cruise clinging to the Burj Khalifa (give or take a few thousand feet). 10 You may not be high-up, but holding on is harder than it looks... I racked up a whopping 14,552 points and landed in the top 12 per cent of players. Not bad for a desk jockey. Having discovered physical tasks were my secret strength, I may or may not have convinced my teammate to take me on in a 1v1 speed race .
