BJP protests against Kerala govt's ‘dismantling' of public health sector for private hospital interests
In Kannur, the protest was inaugurated by former BJP State president K. Surendran, who accused the CPI(M) and the State government of 'systematically destroying the public health care system to pave the way for private investment in super-speciality hospitals.
He said the BJP plans to intensify its protest until Health Minister Veena George steps down, claiming that her tenure has been 'marred by corruption, inefficiency, and apathy' towards the public health infrastructure.
'In the past five years, a large number of private hospitals and super-speciality centres have come up across the State. Corporate players are investing heavily in private healthcare while government hospitals remain in shambles,' Mr. Surendran said.
He said this is happening because 'they have understood that the government is supporting and there is a conducive environment to start a hospital and exploit the people here.'
'Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan claims that public hospitals are for the poor and are providing the best and world-class treatment. Neither he nor Ministers Veena George and M.B. Rajesh have trusted their government hospitals for their own treatment and care. Rather, they are going abroad and depending on the private hospital for their treatment,' he alleged.
Mr. Surendran alleged that there are no doctors or nurses in many government hospitals, with a third of the doctors either on leave, practising privately or having left the country.
'There are no permanent appointments, only contract staff. The centre under the National Health Mission allotted ₹7,500 crore, but where has the money gone? The CPI(M) is answerable,' he said.
Recalling former Health Minister Minister K.K. Shailaja's declaration of strict action against doctors engaged in private practice, Mr. Surendran said the situation has only worsened.
'The government has abandoned that promise. Even now, party cadres are being appointed without filing actual vacancies. More than 40 doctor posts are lying vacant in the Kannur government hospital,' he said.
He said the State government invited controversial vlogger Jyoti Malhotra for tourism promotion. 'This was done with the complete knowledge of the government and the Tourism Minister P.A. Mohamed Riyas,' he alleged.
BJP district north president K. Vinod Kumar and BJP national council member C. Raghunathan were among those who joined the protests.

Health authorities have warned people to avoid visiting patients in hospitals, particularly in Palakkad and Malappuram districts, in the wake of an increased Nipah scare. To minimise risk, hospitals are limiting attendants to one person per patient and mandating masks for all staff, patients, and caregivers. As health officials compiled the contact list of the 58-year-old man from Kumaramputhur, near Mannarkkad, who succumbed to Nipah at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna on Saturday evening, it was revealed that he had mainly used KSRTC buses for travel. The man's family members, including his wife, children and grandchildren, are among the primary contacts. As a precaution, the school attended by the grandchildren has been shut down. Before his death at the Perinthalmanna hospital, the man had visited three other private hospitals for treatment, which may result in a lengthy contact list. As many as 112 persons who came in contact with him in the last three weeks were traced, and a route map was made by examining, among other things, surveillance camera footage. 609 under observation The number of people under observation for Nipah rose to 609 on Monday. When 207 of them are in Malappuram district, 286 are in Palakkad, 114 in Kozhikode and two in Ernakulam. Eight persons are under treatment in intensive care units in Malappuram, when five are under treatment in Palakkad. Health Minister Veena George said that 72 quarantined persons tested negative for Nipah in Malappuram. Crowding is banned in those zones, and shops there can function from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. All educational institutions, including madrasas and anganwadis, have been closed there. There are restrictions on people from outside entering the containment zones.

New Nipah death in Palakkad; 6 districts in Kerala put on alert
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], July 14 (ANI): Kerala's Palakkad district has reported a second Nipah case after a 58-year-old man from Kumaramputhur near Mannarkkad tested positive for the virus following his demise at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna. Following the development, an alert has been issued to hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad, and Thrissur districts of the State. Kerala Health Minister Veena George said that a contact list has been prepared in the case. The government is awaiting confirmation from the Pune Institute of Virology. The patient died on July 12, and his samples tested positive in a test conducted at Manjeri Medical College, the minister said. Contact tracing was immediately started to find those who were in contact with the deceased. Forty-six people are on the contact list. Information, including CCTV, has been collected. A route map has been prepared based on the available information. A family tree has also been prepared, said the minister. Field-level activities have been intensified in the area. Fever surveillance is also continuing. Further monitoring will be carried out, including the mobile tower location. The minister also directed the team to be strengthened in case another case is found. Veena George urged people to avoid unnecessary hospital visits, especially in Palakkad and Malappuram districts. Avoid visiting relatives and friends who are undergoing treatment in the hospital as much as possible. Only one person should accompany the patients as an assistant. Veena George also said that an alert has been issued to hospitals in 6 districts in the wake of the second Nipah case in Palakkad district. Kerala: Six districts on alert after man tests positive for Nipah virus after his death in Palakkad
Six districts in Kerala have been put on alert after a 58-year-old man from Palakkad tested positive for the Nipah virus after he died on Saturday, ANI reported. This is the second case reported in the district. The man from Kumaramputhur near Mannarkkad in Palakkad tested positive for the virus after he died at a private hospital in Malappuram district's Perinthalmanna, The Hindu reported. He was being treated at the hospital for a fever. The virus was detected through tests conducted at the Manjeri Medical College in Malappuram, The New Indian Express reported. The samples have been sent to the Pune's National Institute of Virology in keeping with the standard protocol for confirmation. This was the second Nipah-related death in Kerala in recent weeks. An 18-year-old woman from Malappuram died from the infection on July 1, while another patient from Palakkad was hospitalised. On Sunday, state Health Minister Veena George said that an alert had been issued to hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur districts, ANI reported. George said that a contact list had been prepared of the 46 persons who had interacted with the man over the past three weeks, along with a route map, The Hindu reported. She added that both were awaiting release pending confirmation from the National Institute of Virology. The minister said that fieldwork, including fever surveillance and door-to-door visits by health workers to provide guidance on precautions against the virus, were being conducted in Kumaramputhur. 'We will bolster our fight against Nipah by strengthening the health teams involved in it and intensifying preventive measures as soon as we get the final confirmation from NIV, Pune,' The Hindu quoted George as saying. With the 46 contacts of the latest case, 543 persons across the state were currently under observation for the virus, the newspaper reported. The Nipah virus is a ' zoonotic illness ' transferred from animals such as pigs and fruit bats to humans. The virus can also be caught through human-to-human transmission. It causes fever and cold-like symptoms in patients. The infection can also cause encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain, and myocarditis, or the inflammation of the heart, in some cases.
