Brendan Taylor: Banned for four years, brought out of retirement by Zimbabwe and a Test comeback
Brendan Taylor
made a return to Zimbabwe's Test cricket team after serving a four-year International Cricket Council (ICC) ban, joining the squad for the second Test against New Zealand at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Thursday.
Taylor, who replaced Ben Curran, was sanctioned in January 2022 for accepting USD 15,000 from an Indian businessman during a Delhi trip in 2019 and failing to report the incident promptly to ICC, along with testing positive for cocaine use.

The match saw Taylor's emotional comeback coinciding with New Zealand introducing three new Test debutants - Jacob Duffy, Zakary Foulkes, and Matthew Fisher, who replaced Michael Bracewell, Nathan Smith, and William O'Rourke in the lineup.
New Zealand entered the match leading the two-match series 1-0 following their nine-wicket victory in the first Test at Bulawayo.
According to reports, Taylor's involvement in the incident included receiving additional benefits during his India trip, including a Samsung S10 phone and shopping allowances. The delayed reporting of these interactions to the ICC resulted in his suspension from international cricket.

New Zealand, playing without their regular captain Tom Latham due to a shoulder injury, fielded a team comprising Will Young, Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Rachin Ravindra, Daryl Mitchell, Tom Blundell as wicketkeeper, Mitchell Santner as stand-in captain, along with the three debutants Zakary Foulkes, Matt Henry, Matthew Fisher, and Jacob Duffy.
The Test series between Zimbabwe and New Zealand lacks an official broadcast partner in India. However, Indian cricket fans can follow the matches through the FanCode app, which provides streaming services for the series.
Taylor's return to Test cricket came after serving a four-year suspension from the ICC for a breach of their anti-corruption code. Making his comeback at Queens Sports Club, the former Zimbabwe captain looked composed at the crease and scored 44 runs after Zimbabwe opted to bat first in the second Test against New Zealand.

World Athletics Continental Tour: Animesh Kujur Nabs Gold In Men's 200m; Annu Rani Triumphs In Javelin Throw
Last Updated: Animesh Kujur won gold in the men's 200m at the World Continental Tour Bronze meet, clocking 20.77 seconds. His victory boosts his World Championships ranking. Promising Indian sprinter Animesh Kujur delivered a stellar performance on home soil, clinching gold in the men's 200m at the World Continental Tour Bronze meet on Sunday. Kujur, who had expressed his intent to 'gain home advantage" ahead of the competition, stayed true to his word, clocking 20.77 seconds to finish ahead of KO Seunghwan of Korea (20.95s) and compatriot Raguk Kumar G (21.17s). Eye on World Championships qualification While his winning time was short of the automatic qualification mark of 20.16 seconds for the upcoming World Athletics Championships in Japan, the victory adds crucial ranking points in his bid for a spot. Kujur currently holds the national record in the event at 20.32 seconds and is ranked 42nd in the world — a position just inside the top 48 who will qualify. 'This win is important for my rankings," he had noted earlier, stressing the significance of competing at home in front of a supportive crowd. The qualification deadline is approaching fast, making this result a timely boost. In other standout performances, long jumper M. Sreeshankar, competing in his comeback season after knee surgery, impressed with a season-best leap in his final attempt. Having already crossed the 8m mark thrice during the competition, he underlined his affinity for the Bhubaneswar track, where he had camped for a week before the meet. Meanwhile, javelin thrower Annu Rani maintained her strong form, launching the spear to 62.01m for victory. Starting with 52.74m, she reached her winning mark on her fourth throw, once again surpassing 61m after a season-best 62.59m in Poland last week. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Cam Thomas shocks NBA with bold contract gamble leaving Brooklyn Nets fans stunned
Cam Thomas shocks NBA with bold contract gamble leaving Brooklyn Nets fans stunned (Image source: Getty Images) The Brooklyn Nets are facing an important decision with one of their young scoring guards. Talks between the team and Cam Thomas have not moved forward in the way many expected. While several NBA free agents are still waiting on new contracts this summer, the situation in Brooklyn has taken an interesting turn. Brooklyn Net's current stance on Cam Thomas On Thursday, August 8, NBA insider Jake Fischer from Yahoo Sports reported that the Brooklyn Nets are not pushing hard to sign 23-year-old Cam Thomas to a long-term deal. Thomas, who joined the NBA in 2021, is now leaning toward taking the Nets' $6 million offer for the 2025–26 season. If he does, he will be free to choose any team he wants in the summer of 2026. Fischer wrote, 'Brooklyn has not made an aggressive effort to retain Thomas on any long-term deal… Sources also say Thomas is showing an increasing interest in playing out next season on a $6 million qualifier for the right to enjoy true free agency next summer.' Thomas has been a consistent scoring option when given minutes, averaging 24.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.8 assists last season. He shot 43.8% from the field and 34.9% from three-point range. Despite these numbers, teams around the league have shown little urgency to secure his services with a big-money deal. How the market and Brooklyn Net's roster impact Cam Thomas Free agency across the NBA has slowed this August. Players like Jonathan Kuminga, Quentin Grimes, and Josh Giddey are also waiting for significant offers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Susan Boyle Is Now so Thin and Looks Beautiful! Undo For Thomas, the Nets' salary cap flexibility plays a big role in his current position. Keith Smith of Spotrac noted that Brooklyn is the only team with notable cap space left, which means they have no financial pressure to rush into a deal. 'Because they are the only team with cap space, Brooklyn has no reason to move on a new deal for Thomas that they don't deem a fair value,' Smith said. NBA analyst Zach Lowe has also pointed out that some view Thomas as an 'empty calories' scorer - a player who can put up points but may not impact winning as much as expected. However, others believe that the label is unfair, given his improvement as a passer and his ability to score at all three levels. If Thomas accepts the qualifying offer, he will play one more year in Brooklyn before exploring the open market without restrictions in July 2026.
