SMG Flood Mitigation Initiative Increases Klang River Capacity By 18 Pct
Syaiful Azmen Nordin, managing director of Landasan Lumayan Sdn Bhd (LLSB), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) appointed as the master developer of the SMG project, said the improved river section spans two of four key project blocks - from the Shah Alam-Klang border to the Shah Alam-Puchong border, and from the river mouth to Bandar Klang - identified as Blocks 3 and 1, respectively.
He said that the state government, through its agencies, is targeting a total increase of at least 40 per cent in river capacity by the end of this year after past data revealed that Klang River, especially in Selangor, could not accommodate upstream water overflow during heavy rains.

GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The government-to-government (G2G) approach in the procurement of military assets has proven to be more effective, transparent and cost-saving, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said the method allows for direct negotiations between the Malaysian government and the producing country without the involvement of third parties, thereby avoiding delays and cost wastage due to high commission payments to agents. 'When we negotiate directly with governments, costs are immediately reduced because we have eliminated the excessively high agent fees. That is why the (procurement) process is now completed; in the past, orders would always get stuck,' he said during Minister's Question Time in the Dewan Rakyat today. Anwar said this in reply to a question from Ahmad Fadhli Shaari (PN-Pasir Mas), who asked about the level of the country's defence preparedness in facing global and regional geopolitical uncertainties. The Prime Minister said the G2G approach is now the government's main policy in strategic procurements, including with Korea, Turkiye and Italy, which has seen several major military projects proceed smoothly and according to schedule. Responding to Ahmad Fadhli's supplementary question on the proposed purchase of Black Hawk helicopters or F/A-18 fighter jets, Anwar said any decision on the procurement of air defence assets would be made by the Royal Malaysian Air Force Technical Committee. 'They (the technical committee) will be fully responsible for determining its readiness; if it cannot be justified, we will not sign. That is clearly our policy,' he said. At the same time, Anwar said the government is also focusing on enhancing preparedness, particularly in Pulau Banggi, Sabah, following geopolitical developments involving the presence of Philippine and United States military forces in the southern Philippines, near Malaysia's border. 'I agree that the geopolitical situation is uncertain. Recently, there was an increase in the military readiness of the Philippines and the United States in the southern Philippines, close to Sabah.

Warriors Fund 2024/2025 Campaign Records Increased Collection
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 (Bernama) -- The 2024/2025 Warriors Fund (KTP) Campaign successfully raised over RM2.19 million, surpassing the RM1.3 million collected in the previous edition. Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) Veterans Affairs Department (JHEV) Director-General Major General Datuk Semaon Marjuki said the funds collected through the KTP campaign were channelled to the MAF veterans in the form of general welfare and disaster aid, medical assistance, and educational support for their children. He said the assistance was extended to 2,067 veterans in 2023, 1,627 veterans in 2024, and 5,357 veterans this year. 'For all those who have contributed, I extend my appreciation and encourage continued support as a gesture of gratitude for the sacrifices of our heroes who risked their lives and well-being to safeguard the nation's security and sovereignty. 'Each contribution is also eligible for a 10 per cent income tax rebate from the Inland Revenue Board (IRB),' he told Bernama today. Semaon said that, similar to previous editions, the 2025/2026 KTP campaign, which began on Aug 1 and will run until July 2026, has maintained its collection target of RM3 million. He added that one of the new initiatives for this edition is the One People One Ringgit programme (2R'DP), which enables the public to contribute more conveniently by scanning a QR code linked to the KTP account. 'The official launch of the 2025/2026 KTP is scheduled for this October, in conjunction with the MAF JHEV Silver Jubilee celebration in Melaka, and is expected to be officiated by Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin,' he said. According to him, donations can be made through several channels, including online transfers to the official KTP account, physical donation boxes at strategic locations such as selected BHP petrol stations, corporate contributions, charity sales, participation fees from the MAF JHEV activities, as well as collections by veterans' associations.

More direct arms deals via govts to cut out agents, says Khaled

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The defence ministry is expanding the use of government-to-government deals in making purchases of military equipment, defence minister Khaled Nordin said today. Such deals would avoid the use of agents or middlemen, he said, and were part of the government's efforts to improve governance and ensure transparency in the purchases of national defence assets, Bernama reported. In response to remarks by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong earlier today about not repeating past mistakes in military purchases, Khaled said new proposals would undergo a comprehensive study, involving the end user, namely the armed forces, and would include aspects of suitability, lifespan, safety and technology. 'Any procurement of defence assets is also made based on armed forces' requirements or user-driven,' he said. Before confirming any procurement, a comprehensive assessment of the actual market price is made to ensure every ringgit spent is at the right price, Khaled said in a statement. Yang di-Pertuan Agong Sultan Ibrahim had said all parties involved in military procurement must ensure evaluations are conducted transparently, based on market prices and the actual needs of the armed forces, and not merely on the recommendations of agents or those with vested interests.
