Booming Bitcoin muscles into an old-school investment club
ADVERTISEMENT The digital token's 100% surge over the past year appears to have given a handful of fund portfolios in the $9 trillion actively managed sector a lift. Of the 10 funds invested in Bitcoin via exchange-traded funds, seven have beat their benchmarks by an eye-popping average of 22 percentage points in the 12-month period through July. And while stock picking also played a hefty role in that outperformance, Bitcoin beefed up returns and provided some an outsize bump, according to Bloomberg Intelligence's David Cohne, who compiled the data.
One of those funds — the Kinetics Internet Fund (ticker WWWFX), which has about half of its $348 million in assets allotted to two Grayscale Bitcoin ETFs — trounced its benchmark, the S&P 500 Index, by 23 percentage points over that period, with the token-linked products responsible for most of its total return, the strategist found.
While the crypto industry's reputation as a space rife with illicit activity has ignited controversy about exposing portfolios to its best known token, Bitcoin's stupefying gains year after year — even when accounting for brutal drawdowns — have become too hard to ignore. And while many equity mutual-fund managers are still restricted from owning it under investment mandates, those looking for an edge over the multi-year uptrend in stocks have come to see the digital coin as a high-risk, high-reward tool.'It gives them an opportunity to increase their performance a bit,' said Cohne. While the list of mutual funds holding crypto is far from expansive, he expects it to grow — thanks to a wider acceptance of the industry into the financial mainstream.
ADVERTISEMENT Recent legislation has created a favorable regulatory landscape, helping crypto gain a greater foothold in the financial mainstream. Citigroup Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co. are among Wall Street institutions touting their efforts to break into tokenized deposits and stablecoins, while a new breed of Bitcoin accumulators — modeled on Michael Saylor's Strategy — are raising capital to purchase and hold cryptocurrencies on their balance sheets. The ability to add Bitcoin-linked assets has become especially relevant now, as appetite for active mutual funds continues to fade: more than $280 billion has exited active equity mutual funds so far this year alone, bringing outflows going back to 2020, including 2025's figure, to a staggering $2.3 trillion, according to data compiled by BI.
ADVERTISEMENT An analysis from Bitwise — which runs its own Bitcoin ETF, among other products — suggests that if a traditional portfolio of 60% stocks and 40% bonds were readjusted to include a 5% allocation to Bitcoin, it would have returned more than 200% in the 10 years ending 2024. That compares with a roughly 96% gain clocked by the 60-40 strategy.Meantime, crypto-focused ETFs have drawn in around $75 billion since the start of last year, according to BI-compiled data. Spot-Bitcoin ETFs, in particular, are a key beneficiary. These products, which hadn't existed in the US prior to last year, offer investors a cheap and easily tradeable way to get exposure to the digital coin.
ADVERTISEMENT Patient Capital, a $2.2 billion investment manager, has held a position in one such ETF — Fidelity's FBTC — which it bought for its Opportunity Fund starting late last year.'One thing that differentiates our funds is our flexibility to do unique things and our willingness to invest in attractive opportunities early in their life cycle,' said Samantha McLemore, chief investment officer at the Baltimore-based firm.Still, it's common for mutual funds to have specific limitations that may curtail them from diving into the crypto realm. Patient Capital had to overcome 'constraints' to invest in Fidelity's Bitcoin ETF, according to McLemore, who said a fund's prospectus 'must allow such investments.'
ADVERTISEMENT Those with tech-adjacent mandates, like Kinetics' internet fund, could make the case that digital assets fit into their policies, BI's Cohne said.Even if a mutual fund manages to add Bitcoin products to its lineup and beat the market, it doesn't guarantee inflows. Of the 10 funds that own Bitcoin ETFs, only three have seen inflows so far this year, data compiled by Cohne showed.
'Unless fund companies can convince investors that a higher fee is worth it,' he said, 'they will need to consider lowering their fees even more to stay competitive.'

Moutai Posts Worst Growth in Years as Chinese Cut Back on Liquor
(Bloomberg) -- Kweichow Moutai Co. delivered its worst six-month growth in sales or profit in years as China's top distiller struggles with weak consumer demand for premium beverages. First-half revenue increased 9.2% from a year earlier to 91.09 billion yuan ($12.7 billion), while net income climbed 8.9% to 45.4 billion yuan, the company reported Tuesday. Those are the slowest semiannual increases since at least 2016, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. The distiller, which has targeted sales growth of about 9% for the year, has seen flagship liquor Feitian's wholesale price — the fee Moutai distributors charge alcohol retailers — continue to slide and even reach a record low this year, as consumers pulled back on spending amid economic uncertainty in China. Wholesale prices for Feitian 2024 and Feitian 2025 in original packaging have declined by 16% to 17% year-to-date, according to Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Ada Li. In a further blow to liquor prices, China's government in May issued a notice reminding officials to cut wasteful spending on travel, food and office space. The austerity drive could further risk tanking demand for liquor at government banquets and corporate events. The company even replaced its signature liquor with blueberry juice at a buffet during its annual shareholders meeting that month, local media reported. To address falling prices, Moutai distributors in some provinces have adopted supply restrictions to channels including e-commerce platforms, according to a local media report. Still, Moutai's earnings have been largely shielded from the volatility in wholesale prices as it sells its sorghum-based liquor, known as baijiu, to distributors at a fixed price of 1,169 yuan per 500 milliliter bottle. Smaller baijiu makers have been more exposed. Sichuan Swellfun Co.'s profit slumped 57% and sales fell 13% in the first half, according to a preliminary earnings report. Jiugui Liquor Co. has warned first-half net income dropped by at least 90% and revenue to shrank by 43%. 'A strong rebound in baijiu is unlikely through year-end, as new anti-extravagance rules dampen demand and wholesale prices amid destocking and tight inventory controls,' said Bloomberg Intelligence's Li. Still, the fallout from the latest austerity push may be less severe than a crackdown in 2012, thanks to more adaptable producers and already-reduced government demand, she added. Moutai shares have been under pressure due to the wholesale price weakness. The stock dropped 5.7% so far this year, compared with a 5.3% gain in the Shanghai Shenzhen CSI 300 Index. An index of China-listed liquor makers has fallen 8.8% this year. --With assistance from Foster Wong. More stories like this are available on

Pakistan will not allow India to snatch 'even one drop' of its water: PM Sharif
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday said India would not be allowed to snatch "even one drop" of water belonging to Pakistan, amid tensions between the two neighbours. A day after the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, India took a series of punitive measures against Pakistan that included putting the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) of 1960 in "abeyance". He warned that if India attempted such an act, "you will be again taught such a lesson that you will be left holding your ears." Live Events A day earlier, former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari termed the IWT's suspension an attack on the Indus Valley Civilisation and said the nation would not back down if New Delhi forced it into war. In an address to the Pakistani diaspora in Tampa, Florida, Army Chief Asim Munir reportedly said Islamabad would destroy any dam if it cut off water flow to Pakistan. "We will wait for India to build a dam, and when they do so, we will destroy it," he was quoted as saying by the Dawn newspaper. "The Indus River is not the Indians' family property. We have no shortage of resources to undo the Indian designs to stop the river." India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. India and Pakistan reached an understanding on May 10 to end the conflict after four days of intense cross-border drone and missile strikes.

Dgca issues show cause notice to Indigo for using unapproved simulators for pilot training
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) issued a show-cause notice to IndiGo for allegedly using unapproved simulators to train about 1,700 pilots for flight operations to challenging airfields such as Calicut, Leh, and Kathmandu. The DGCA scrutinised simulator training records of IndiGo pilots and found that "Category C (critical) airfield training" for about 1,700 of the airline's pilots was conducted using "non-qualified" simulators, said the show-cause notice issued to IndiGo's Director, Training on August 11. The airline must respond to the notice within 14 days, failing which the DGCA will initiate "ex parte action," the notice said. Category C airfields are those that present unusual challenges during approach to land or departure. They are located in mountainous regions like Leh, Kathmandu, or in the hilly south Malabar region in the case of Calicut. Due to the limitations imposed by the terrain, these airfields often have short, table-top runways and specific wind and atmospheric pressure conditions typical to the high terrain. Pilots operating to such airports undergo specific training to handle the unusual challenges and weather conditions typical to such airports. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo The show-cause notice said that the airline conducted training sessions in violation of certain DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements (CAR) provisions, potentially raising concerns about compliance and operational safety. According to the DGCA, simulator training for critical airfield operations must be conducted on devices specifically approved for those airports. The notice lists 20 simulators at facilities in Chennai, Delhi, Bangalore, Greater Noida, Gurugram, and Hyderabad, with remarks such as "not qualified for Calicut" or "not qualified for Calicut and Leh" against each. IndiGo confirmed the receipt of a show-cause notice issued by the DGCA pertaining to simulator training of some of its pilots. "We are in the process of reviewing the same and will respond to the regulator within the stipulated timeline. We remain committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety and compliance across our operations," said an IndiGo spokesperson. The DGCA show-cause notice cited breaches of CAR Section-7, Series D, Part VI, Para 35.16(ii) and Operation Circular 15/2014. The said CAR deals with the standards for flight crew training and requires that simulator training must be conducted using approved devices and in accordance with prescribed procedures. Circular 15/2014 outlines the qualifications required of simulators and flight training devices. It provides criteria that the DGCA uses to evaluate and qualify training devices, specifying that these must accurately replicate the aircraft, airport-specific models, and the operating environment to be authorised for pilot training. It mandates processes around updates to airport models; for instance, changes to runways or taxiways must be reflected in simulators within 90 days.
