Blue Sharks can sharpen up Harimau Malaya

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia, it is said, have found it hard to find "strong footballing nations" for international friendlies due to the national team's unimpressive world ranking.
So, Cape Verde coming to Kuala Lumpur to play Malaysia is something to be excited about. After all, the West African side are ranked world No. 72, much higher than Malaysia's world No. 131.
It's indeed a feather in FAM's cap to bring in Cape Verde, which will enable Malaysia's national players to have a rare learning-and-playing opportunity.
An island nation with a population of only 596,000, Cape Verde has produced stars like Logan Costa (playing for La Liga side Villarreal), Dailon Livramento (Serie A club Verona) and Bryan Teixeira (Bundesliga's Magdeburg).
Our coaches often say that Harimau Malaya need to play against higher-ranked teams to be better. But top teams like Japan, South Korea, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, etc, won't be interested in playing friendlies against Malaysia because of our world ranking.
So, for a change, Malaysia, who havebeen reduced to playing lowly sides like Timor Leste and Nepal in recent years, will get to play a top team soon.
And the deal gets even better, two for the price of one, so to speak. Cape Verde have agreed to play Malaysia two times.
Malaysia are scheduled to play Cape Verde in an international friendly at KLFA Stadium on May 29 and a closed-door test match at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on June 3.
Former national footballer and pundit Hasnizam Uzir said: "We've had friendlies before, but nothing like this. Previously, we didn't face as much of a challenge when we played Nepal.
"Now, Cape Verde will test our players in ways we haven't seen before."
Uzir said the two matches against Cape Verde offer a rare opportunity for the national coaches to gauge Malaysia's readiness ahead of their crucial Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam on June 10.
"This is the kind of match that will push Malaysia's players to their limits."
He said Cape Verde's physicality and high intensity will toughen up Malaysia against Southeast Asia powerhouse Vietnam.
Meanwhile football critic Datuk Dr Pekan Ramli said: "Cape Verde agreed to play us, which is an honour."
He said the matches against Cape Verde offer a rare and valuable opportunity for Malaysia to play a world-class team.
"Cape Verde were ranked 27th in the world in 2014, an exciting feat. This is the kind of test we've always wanted, an opponent ranked under the world top 100. Even though they are No. 72 now, it's a rare name to face in friendlies," said Pekan.
Cape Verde made waves at last year's Africa Cup of Nations. They stunned favourites Ghana 2-1 in the group stage and held South Africa to a goalless draw in the quarter-finals before exiting on penalties (2-1).
Now, Malaysia hope the two warm-up matches against the Blue Sharks, as Cape Verde are known, will help them sharpen up against Vietnam.

‘We have to earn it': Xabi Alonso ready for Bernabeu debut as new-look Real Madrid begin La Liga push

MADRID, Aug 19 — Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said the team's shortened pre-season will not be used as an excuse as they prepare to kick off their La Liga campaign at home to Osasuna today. Alonso will take charge at the Santiago Bernabeu for the first time after beginning his reign at the Club World Cup in the United States, where Madrid reached the semi-finals. Madrid's request to postpone their league opener to a later date was rejected by Spanish football officials, and the team have played just one friendly since their 4-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in New Jersey on July 9. 'Obviously it would have been nice to receive some support with our request, especially for the players' health... after such a long season and to have a little more preparation time,' Alonso said yesterday. 'But anyway, in the end it wasn't to be and that's that. We've only had two weeks and there's no point looking for excuses now.' Alonso has several new signings, including former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, at his disposal as Madrid look to turn the page on a disappointing end to the Carlo Ancelotti era. Madrid won the Champions League and La Liga in 2023–24 but finished runners-up domestically to arch-rivals Barcelona last season and suffered a quarter-final exit to Arsenal in Europe. Alonso, who led Bayer Leverkusen to a remarkable Bundesliga and German Cup double two seasons ago, was coy about his expectations in the Spanish capital. 'I tend to be more of a doer than a talker. So making promises before taking action in football doesn't usually work,' said Alonso. 'We are working hard and people are eager, you can feel that. We are also very eager, we want to start this new project, with new players, a new coach, and bring this energy we have to the stadium, and then earn it, not just talk about it. 'Talking about it won't make it happen, otherwise it would all be very easy. We have to earn it and we have to start tomorrow on that path to get where we want to be in May.' Alonso also fully backed Madrid's opposition to plans to stage a La Liga game between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami in December. Madrid said last week it would 'give an undue sporting advantage' to the teams involved. 'I agree wholeheartedly with the club's statement,' added Alonso. 'I believe that at the start of the competition, we all knew what the rules were, and if the rules are to be changed, it must be unanimously agreed upon by all participants. 'Therefore, I believe that this is not appropriate at this time and that all La Liga participants should have been consulted beforehand.' — AFP

Alonso vows no excuses as Real Madrid face La Liga opener

REAL Madrid coach Xabi Alonso insists the team will not use their limited pre-season as an excuse ahead of Tuesday's La Liga opener against Osasuna. Alonso will make his Santiago Bernabeu debut after beginning his tenure during the Club World Cup in the US, where Madrid reached the semi-finals. The club's request to delay their league start was denied, leaving them with just one friendly since their 4-0 loss to PSG on July 9. 'Obviously it would have been nice to receive some support with our request, especially for the players' health... after such a long season and to have a little more preparation time,' Alonso said. 'But anyway, in the end it wasn't to be and that's that. We've only had two weeks and there's no point looking for excuses now.' New signings like Trent Alexander-Arnold join Alonso's squad as Madrid aim to move on from Carlo Ancelotti's underwhelming final season. Despite winning the Champions League and La Liga in 2023-24, Madrid finished behind Barcelona last term and fell to Arsenal in Europe. Alonso, who achieved a Bundesliga and German Cup double with Leverkusen, remained cautious about setting lofty targets. 'I tend to be more of a doer than a talker. So making promises before taking action in football doesn't usually work,' said Alonso. 'We are working hard and people are eager, you can feel that. We are also very eager, we want to start this new project, with new players, a new coach, and bring this energy we have to the stadium, and then earn it, not just talk about it.' He emphasised that success must be earned, starting with Tuesday's match against Osasuna. Alonso also supported Madrid's stance against La Liga's proposed Miami fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona in December. 'I agree wholeheartedly with the club's statement,' added Alonso. 'I believe that at the start of the competition, we all knew what the rules were, and if the rules are to be changed, it must be unanimously agreed upon by all participants.' He stressed that all La Liga clubs should have been consulted before such a decision was made. - AFP
