‘Black Warrant' Team Unpacks Netflix Series Success at Cinevesture Film Festival

Yahoo23-03-2025

'Black Warrant,' the hit Netflix series currently in the platform's India Top 10 nearly three months after its premiere, was the focus of a panel at the ongoing Cinevesture International Film Festival in Chandigarh, India.
The discussion featured creator-showrunner Vikramaditya Motwane, producer Sameer Nair of Applause Entertainment, and lead actors Zahan Kapoor and Rahul Bhat, who explored the 'synergy for success' that has made the prison drama a streaming standout.

Based on 'Black Warrant: Confessions of a Tihar Jailer' by Sunil Gupta and journalist Sunetra Choudhury, the series chronicles Gupta's 35-year career at India's notorious Tihar prison, where he oversaw infamous inmates including serial killer Charles Sobhraj and and kidnappers Kuljeet Singh (alias Ranga Khus) and Jasbir Singh (alias Billa).
Motwane, also known for Netflix's 'Sacred Games,' explained that the adaptation process required narrowing the book's extensive timespan. 'When you read the book, it's fantastic because it's so dramatic. Sunil Gupta gets a job – on the very first day, he's meeting Charles Sobhraj, who he didn't know about. Within the first year, he's in charge of the hanging of Ranga and Billa,' Motwane said.
Rather than attempting to cover all 35 years, Motwane and co-creator Satyanshu Singh decided to focus the first season on just four years of Gupta's career. 'Otherwise, it'd start to become very episodic, just looking at hanging after hanging. Is there any fun in that?' Motwane explained.
The project originated with journalist Josie Joseph and Confluence Media, who initially identified the book's adaptation potential before approaching Motwane. 'Josie reached out to me to say, are you interested? I read the book, got Satya involved, and said, 'Let's adapt this.' We set up, wrote a Bible, wrote two episodes, and then I took it to Sameer,' Motwane said.
The series embraced a mix of established and emerging talent, with Kapoor playing the protagonist Sunil Gupta and Bhat portraying Deputy Superintendent of Police Tomar.
Bhat, known for playing the lead in Anurag Kashyap's Cannes-selected 'Kennedy,' described his approach to the morally complex character: 'Any character, even if it's a villain, you still have to relate to and have empathy towards. You have to represent him. You're that character's lawyer.'
For Kapoor, grandson of renowned actor Shashi Kapoor and deeply connected to Mumbai's Prithvi Theatre legacy, his theater background proved invaluable. Motwane praised Kapoor's contributions beyond acting: 'The years at Prithvi have taught him so much about character, drama, story, and script. Such a value add.'
Kapoor was cast through an audition process that Motwane described as immediately convincing: 'Within the first 10 seconds of his audition, you know he's the guy. It was very meta, because the scene he auditioned for was the very first scene of the series when he's going for the interview.'
'I was always a little bit apprehensive of trying to manipulate and manufacture some kind of image or impression on the audience of who I am. I always found that to be slightly dishonest,' Kapoor said. 'I'm much more a product of Prithvi Theatre than I am of the film fraternity legacy.'
'Black Warrant' employed multiple directors under Motwane's showrunning, a model he believes should become standard for Indian streaming series. 'It's a very efficient model of being able to work, where you can get work done quicker, more efficiently with fresher minds,' Motwane explained.
The series featured five directors total, including Motwane, Singh, Arkesh Ajay, Rohin Raveendran Nair, and Ambiecka Pandit.
'As a showrunner, you can detach a little bit. The importance for me is making sure that my character arcs are being served in the way we set them out right in the beginning,' Motwane said.
Sameer Nair of Applause Entertainment highlighted their production approach of making content before securing a platform. 'When we're doing this, there's a little bit of butterfly in the stomach that you're taking a lot of decisions that other people now have to like before the audience likes it,' Nair said. He praised Netflix for understanding their vision: 'With all due credit to Netflix, they got it straight away.'
Regarding star power versus ensemble casting in streaming, Nair offered: 'In the series business, these are longer stories, deeper stories, richer stories. You get a chance to get an ensemble cast, find new actors, and surprise audiences.'

‘Deliciously at odds': Zachary Quinto on embodying the brilliant yet flawed Dr. Oliver Wolf in ‘Brilliant Minds'

Although there's no shortage of medical dramas on the air, Brilliant Minds sets itself apart by taking its inspiration from Oliver Sacks, the famed neurologist whose groundbreaking work was previously dramatized in the film Awakenings. Zachary Quinto jumped at the opportunity to play a version of Sacks, who is "an endlessly fascinating and influential presence in both the world of medicine and literature." That, combined with the creative team behind the show, created "an alchemy to the whole package that felt undeniable to me." Quinto plays Dr. Oliver Wolf, a socially awkward yet exceptional neurologist who utilizes unconventional techniques to treat his patients. Although Robin Williams got the opportunity to work closely with Sacks during the production of Awakenings, Quinto was unable to do the same, since Sacks died in 2015. Yet as Quinto tells Gold Derby, "there's a really unique aspect of this experience," which is that while this is inspired by a real person, "we're also creating a character who is fictional, and exists in a different time and in a different environment than the one in which the real life Oliver Sacks lived and worked. So it was kind of the best of both worlds for me as an actor, because I certainly was able to dive into copious amounts of his writing," as well as "endless interviews with him," while still making it his own. More from GoldDerby Ryan Gosling's 'Star Wars: Starfighter': Everything to know as Mia Goth takes on the Mikey Madison role Olivia Williams was more than happy to be 'the wise old bird' on the 'Dune: Prophecy' set 'Forever' star Lovie Simone on traveling back to a 'nostalgic' time for Netflix's teenage romance show Dr. Oliver Wolf is, as Quinto describes him, "an often misunderstood but incredibly well-meaning person. I don't think he always has the capacity to articulate or communicate as smoothly as maybe he would like to. There's something really special about embodying that. I really found that endearing and appealing about the character. At his core, he is an incredibly brilliant, dedicated, empathetic, and driven doctor, and his main thrust and motivation is really caring for his patients as fully and as generously as he can. There was something about the blending of those two qualities that was deliciously at odds. Those aren't two qualities that necessarily go hand-in-hand, and I love that about him. He's clumsy sometimes. He doesn't suffer fools. He's not interested in listening to differing perspectives. He believes what he believes," which is "every patient he treats deserves respect and dignity, and to be seen." Brendan Meadows/NBC Part of Quinto's job is making sense of the medical lingo his character rattles off as if it's second nature. Unlike other medical dramas, "You're not dramatizing gunshot wounds or heart attacks. It's all neurological cases, so it really is about delving into the mind." So, the question is, "How do I make this dialogue accessible and interesting, and humanize it and invite audiences into it?" It helps that the scripts by creator Michael Grassi and his team feature the input of on-staff medical consultants. "We all have to portray characters for whom this language is everyday jargon, and it's something that we have to be able to pass off as believable, even if the audience isn't meant to know exactly what it means because we're in the process of explaining it to them. We have to come from a place where the characters know exactly what these words mean, and that is always an interesting challenge, but it's a challenge that I really relish." Added into that are the various medical ailments that Dr. Wolf and his team of interns have to deal with week-to-week. "I can't tell you how many times I thought, 'Well, this can't be real,'" says Quinto of the scripts he received. "But then we get directed to the chapter of An Anthropologist on Mars or The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat," both books written by Sacks which served as inspiration for the series, "where he chronicled the real life parallel case." All of the cases and conditions dramatized in the show were taken from real life, some of which were treated by Dr. Sacks, and some of which "are adjacent to, or inspired by, those cases. I often felt really challenged in the many, many ways in which our brains and our minds can go astray, and the impacts of that which these patients experience." Among the most surprising patient arcs portrayed in the first season is that of a comatose John Doe who is given the ability to communicate thanks to a revolutionary brain computer. In the show's seventh episode, "The Man From Grozny," we learn that he came to American from Chechnya to flee oppression for being gay, and having told his story, he makes a surprising request for the remainder of his care. "To me, that storyline and the way that it resolved, which was not at all how I expected it to resolve when it was introduced to me as a multi-episode arc, was, I think, the most impactful personally for me," Quinto reveals, as well as "the most impactful in a lot of ways for the audience as the season unfolded." Quinto earned an Emmy nomination in 2013 for American Horror Story: Asylum, and since then has worked mostly in film and theater with occasional stints on television. As Brilliant Minds heads into its second season, he's found a renewed appreciation for "that kind of serialized storytelling that I've been away from for a long time, and I'm actually really grateful to be back to" for the first time since Heroes. "To now be involved in an ongoing series playing the same character who's going through a number of different circumstances and situations is something that I really welcome, and it's been really fulfilling for me creatively." What to Watch This Weekend (June 7-8): 10 Best New Movies and Shows to Stream Now (Including a Show That'll Have You Locked in For Weeks!)

You really have to buckle in this time because this is a busy week in the world of streaming and movies! This weekend, June 7-8, we have the usual summer blockbuster action movies and returns of beloved shows, but also something new: two exciting Broadway-related events for those who are theatrically inclined (I'm looking at you, any secret Gleeks!). More par for the course, Netflix also has a juicy, highly anticipated drama, and Peacock is giving the people what they want: a show that will give you an excuse to not leave your couch for approximately six weeks (like, actually). And there's more! Here's a list of the 10 best new movies and shows to watch this weekend and where to stream them. Move aside Black Widow, we have a new trained woman assassin in the mix — and she's no superhero. Ana de Armas stars as ballerina-assassin Eve Macarro, who is hellbent on getting revenge on her father's killers in Ballerina. A spinoff of the John Wick action series, Ballerina takes place between the events of the third and fourth movie, the latter of which came out in 2023. Ballerina releases in theaters on June 6. Just as the title suggests, this movie is about the life of a man named Chuck, played by a cheery Tom Hiddleston, and takes place over three eras in his life, from childhood to adulthood. In addition to a starry cast, the film features a 7-minute dance number by Hiddleston, who told PEOPLE he found filming the scene "spontaneous and joyful." The Life of Chuck releases in theaters on June 6. If you thought this show couldn't get any crazier ... you couldn't be more wrong. Georgia is awaiting her murder trial, Ginny faces teen pregnancy and their relationship is going through its usual ups and downs. The specific details are even crazier, but we don't want to spoil! Rest assured, if you're looking for a rollercoaster ride (but not the Six Flags kind), this is the right binge for you. Watch season 3 of Ginny & Georgia on Netflix. We at PEOPLE are SAT for this show, and we highly recommend that you be too. If you're ready to commit to over a month of new episodes six days a week, then buckle in because Love Island USA is back! After a steamy sixth season, the beloved show is back for season 7 — and the drama is already piping hot. This time around, viewers will be transported to the tropical coasts of Fiji to watch hot bombshells play with each other's love lives. Watch new episodes of season 7 of Love Island USA on Peacock. Taraji P. Henson is a single mother on her last straw in Tyler Perry's Straw. The poor woman's day gets crazier and crazier as she goes from being evicted to being blamed for a bank robbery — and all she wants is to cash a check for her daughter. Now, her survival depends on trusting a sympathetic police officer (Teyana Taylor) and a soothing friend (Sherri Shepherd). Watch Straw on Netflix. If you're a longtime Housewives fan then you'll be just as nostalgic as we are that the kids of our favorite ladies are all grown up — and ready to follow in their parents' footsteps. Bringing together Housewife favorite celebrity kids like Gia Giudice and Brooks Marks, Next Gen NYC follows a group of reality TV nepo babies and their friends as they live out their 20s in New York (and yes, maybe we're secretly clamoring for an invite ... ). Watch new episodes of Next Gen NYC on Tuesdays on Bravo and next day on Peacock. People are clearly super into predators as the ninth installment in the Predators franchise was released on Hulu on June 6 — and this one is taking fans way back. Like to the Vikings and feudal Japan back, because every era in history has predators right? How fun! In all seriousness, this animated anthology jumps across three time zones, ending in World War II, and sets up how predators have been coming to Earth for centuries to prove their competency through battle. Watch Predator: Killer of Killers on Hulu. AppleTV+ loves an underdog sports story, and Stick is no different, starring Owen Wilson as Pryce 'Stick' Cahill. Stick is a former professional golfer whose career ended after he had a very public mental breakdown on the course. When he comes across an amateur teen who he's convinced has what it takes to make it, Stick is reinvigorated and ready to coach him to a championship — but it's, naturally, not as easy as it seems. Watch Stick on AppleTV+. We're ending this week's list with two exciting live events in the Broadway world! First up, the 78th Annual Tony Awards are taking place this Sunday, celebrating the best in theater. This year marks many of the nominees' Broadway debuts, including George Clooney and Nicole Scherzinger, who are up for two of the most prestigious awards of the night. Other nominees include Mia Farrow, Sadie Sink, Sarah Snook, and Jonathan Groff, while Broadway veteran Cynthia Erivo is set to host the special night. Watch the Tony Awards live at 8 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+. For the first time in Broadway history, a play will be aired live on broadcast as Clooney takes his penultimate bow in Good Night, and Good Luck. The 5-time Tony-nominated show, which is based off the 2005 movie of the same name, will end its run on Sunday, June 7 — and give fans who didn't get a chance to nab their ticket one last chance to watch it live before final curtain. Watch Good Night, and Good Luck live on CNN and and streaming live on Max. Read the original article on People
