Ryne Nelson, D-backs blank Pirates, end 5-game skid
May 27 - Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor homered, Ryne Nelson pitched 6 2/3 sharp innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks broke a five-game losing streak with a 5-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday in Phoenix.
Nelson (2-1) gave up four hits and struck out four without a walk in his longest start of the season. He made his second start for Eduardo Rodriguez, who was placed on the injured list May 16 due to shoulder inflammation.
Four relievers finished up the shutout for Arizona, with Ryan Thompson handling the ninth inning in a non-save situation.
Gabriel Moreno had three hits and Ketel Marte had two hits and an RBI for the D-backs, who just finished a stretch in which they played 22 of 25 games against teams with a winning record. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. also collected two hits.
The Pirates loaded the bases in the eighth on an error by Suarez at third base and two walks issued by Scott McGough. Justin Martinez entered and retired the side on a strikeout, an infield fly and a groundout.
Pittsburgh was shut out for the ninth time this year.
Adam Frazier and Alexander Canario had two hits apiece for the Pirates, who had won four of six in their best stretch of the season.
Pirates starter Andrew Heaney (3-4) gave up five runs on eight hits in five innings with two strikeouts and three walks.
Oneil Cruz led off the game with a check-swing double inside the bag at third and reached third with two outs before Nelson got Spencer Horwitz to ground out to end the inning.
The Pirates did not have another runner get beyond first base until Frazier doubled with two outs in the seventh.
Randal Grichuk singled and Moreno doubled to open the second off Heaney, who had given up four runs total in his previous three starts. Tim Tawa hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Grichuk, then Marte singled home Moreno for a 2-0 lead.
Suarez's 433-foot homer made it 3-0 in the fourth. It was his 15th, tying him with teammate Corbin Carroll for third in the National League.
Suarez walked with one out in the fifth and scored on Naylor's homer, which just cleared the right field fence for a 5-0 lead. It was Naylor's sixth long ball of the year.

June 7 - Right-hander Zack Littell won in his sixth straight decision, Jonathan Aranda had two RBIs, and the red-hot Tampa Bay Rays edged the visiting Miami Marlins 4-3 on Friday afternoon in the opener of a three-game series. Coming off the Rays' first complete game since Ryan Yarbrough in 2021, 647 straight contests ago, Littell (6-5) allowed one run on six hits while striking out four with no walks. Michael Soroka leads combined two-hitter as Nats beat Rangers
June 7 - Michael Soroka threw six scoreless innings and Alex Call homered to propel the Washington Nationals to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Texas Rangers on Friday. Soroka (3-3) allowed just two hits while striking out seven and walking one for the Nationals, who had dropped three of four games prior to the series opener. The Washington bullpen kept Texas hitless for the final three innings. Closer Kyle Finnegan retired the first two Rangers he faced in the ninth before Marcus Semien reached on CJ Abrams' fielding error. Finnegan got Jake Burger to pop out to end the game, securing his 18th save of the season. Corbin cruised through the bottom of the fifth with a five-pitch inning. Smith laced a one-out single in the sixth while Corey Seager worked a two-out walk, but Soroka escaped the jam by inducing Semien's flyout. Brad Lord relieved Soroka in the seventh, retiring Burger and Evan Carter on two pitches before getting Garcia to pop out to end the inning. Jose Ferrer added a perfect eighth. Athletics place C Shea Langeliers (oblique) on IL
June 6 - The Athletics placed catcher Shea Langeliers on the 10-day injured list Friday due to a left oblique strain. Langeliers was injured during a sixth-inning at-bat in a 14-3 win over the Minnesota Twins on Thursday. He grabbed his left side after fouling off a pitch. Catcher Jhonny Pereda was recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas in a corresponding move. The Athletics also recalled outfielder Seth Brown from Las Vegas and designated outfielder Drew Avans for assignment. Langeliers, 27, is batting .237 with 10 homers and 27 RBIs in 56 games this season. Langeliers set career highs of 29 homers and 80 RBIs in 2024.
