Netflix axe huge reality show with all-star cast after just one series as it's branded ‘most expensive flop in years'

The Irish Sun29-07-2025
It was one of Netflix's most expensive flops – and now Battle Camp been axed after just one series.
The
celebrity
challenge show, with a strong whiff of I'm a Celebrity, dropped on the streaming service in April but got a poor reception from critics and viewers alike.

Filmed on location in Mexico, the series featured names including Tony Castellanos, Shubham Goel and Gabi Butler and others from the streamer's various reality shows such as Too Hot to Handle, Love Is Blind and The Circle.
But I can reveal that Netflix quickly took the decision to shelve a second season due to the lacklustre response and the huge costs involved in making the ten-parter.
A TV insider said: 'There were so many individuals taking part in the show, with 18 contestants in total.
The fact that they all charged a fee to take part and that it was filmed on location, made it unusually costly.

Plus the format — set in a camp which was purpose-built from scratch for the show — relied on multiple challenges, each costing big money to set up. It was an expense Netflix would have been happy to shoulder, except it didn't meet their expectations.
'The hope was that it would create the sense of there being a 'Netflix reality universe', but most people who watched it didn't think the show was out of this world.'
Fingers burned
Netflix had already had their fingers burned in February when they screened
Like Battle Camp, the show cost millions to make but didn't make an impact when it dropped earlier this year and it was axed in June.

Perhaps the streamer needs to come up with some original formats, rather than mash-ups of other shows.

Looks like the new adaptation of Frankenstein has already got a big fan long before its aired on Netflix.
Small wonder looking at the opulent treatment that's been given to Mary Shelley's classic novel by the visionary director Guillermo Del Toro.
The drama, which drops this November sees hunky Jacob Elordi play the monster while Oscar Isaac is his creator Baron Frankenstein.
Mia Goth plays Elizabeth Lavenza, the baron's beautiful fiancee.

Matthew Goode thinks a cut scene in Netflix's Dept Q could tease a second series

Netflix hit Dept Q could be set for a second series, that's if you believe a conspiracy theory cooked up by one of its stars.
Matthew Goode, who plays DCI Carl Morck in the British crime thriller based on the books by Danish writer Jussi Adler-Olsen, says he clocked creator Scott Frank edit out a key scene at the last minute which revealed much-needed information on his character's past – which he thinks could be used in a future series.
The Crown actor thinks the chopped out speech gave viewers a much-needed explanation about the mysterious dad-of-one and he believes it was purposely saved for a later date.

He explains: 'There was a speech in episode five which got taken out, I'm not going to say what [his last job was] in case Scott changes his mind or uses it for a second series, but it was perfect... he's taken out some of the information and I love that because he remains a mystery – there's ten books that could be done so hopefully we get to do at least a few of those.'
He's not just a good on screen detective.

Filming for the second run of drama This City Is Ours gets under way next month.

I can reveal the hit BBC One series, following the lives of the notorious Phelan family, will be shot in Liverpool and Spain once again.
Its debut eight-episode run, which aired in March, attracted more than six million viewers and is the Beeb's most-watched new drama this year.
Dubbed 'the Scouse Sopranos', due to its parallels with the hit Italian-American gangster drama, the series caused such a buzz one of its stars James Nelson-Joyce has been touted as a contender to be the next James Bond.
But another of its cast members with a 007 connection, GoldenEye's Sean Bean, won't be returning in the follow-up as.

The veteran actor's character, Ronnie Phelan, was killed off in series one – the 25th on-screen death of the Sheffield actor's career.
No wonder he's always grumpy.
Claudia Doumit and Ellie De Lange are joining the cast of the second series of 3 Body Problem on Netflix.
The fantasy series was a huge hit for the streaming giant when it debuted last year and a sequel was quickly in the pipeline.

Claudia and Ellie will play the characters of Captain Van Rijn and Ayla, respectively.
The first season of the drama series spent 3 weeks at No.1 and 7 weeks on the Netflix Global Top 10, where it reached the top 10 in 93 countries.

Danny Dyer shocked locals with a nude scene filmed on a real street for Sky comedy Mr Bigstuff

Danny Dyer's nude scene in the new series of Mr Bigstuff gave an entire neighbourhood the willies.

That's because filming for the Sky Max comedy took place during Halloween on a real-life suburban street and according to creator and co-star Ryan Sampson, the sight of the former EastEnders star sprinting down a road with nothing but a sock on his manhood didn't go unnoticed.
Speaking on The MashyCast podcast, Ryan said: 'I'd written this scene where Danny is running down a suburban street chasing someone so they said 'when we actually came to do this you're going to have to tell Danny that you're really doing this'; it's a real street, real people live there, it's not like a Hollywood film with a budget where we can CGI it all, he actually has to run down with just a little sock, well a reasonable sized sock, on his bits and pieces.
'I was so nervous, we had just one take because we were losing the light at the end of the day and I was waiting at the end of the street and there's a man going into his house and he goes 'sorry babe, I'm going to have to go because there's a man running down the street naked and I think it's Mick from EastEnders'.
'It was just unreal and it was on Halloween, so there were [people out].'

TV review: Irish-filmed Wednesday is the perfect watch for parents and teens

If you're looking for something to watch with your teenager, make it Wednesday (Netflix). My wife and our teenage daughter raved about the first series. You hate to be left out of these things, so I made the teenager watch the first episode of season two. The story isn't really the thing, it's just an American take on Harry Potter, with more teenage sass. But the performances are off the scale. Jenna Ortega is hilarious as Wednesday Addams, completely believable as your goth older sister. No smiles, no affection, she 'plays the cello, not the violin' as she puts it herself. Catherine Zeta-Jones is her mother Morticia, a caring Mom behind the tough witch exterior. The stand-out so far in season two is Steve Buscemi as Barry Dort, the new principal of Nevermore, the school for outcasts that hosts all the action. You forget that he's just very very good at acting. Here he is, The Simpsons' Ned Flanders made flesh, full of go-getting cliches and funny clangers, none better when he introduces a song from 'that great American outcast, Bruce Springsteen'. What really makes Wednesday is that it has Tim Burton all over it. He's the executive producer and directs a few episodes so not only does it look great, but he makes it possible to laugh out loud in terror during a few scenes. (left-right) Joy Sunday, Isaac Ordonez, Luis Guzman, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jenna Ortega, Joanna Lumley, Fred Armisen, Emma Myers, Georgie Farmer, Billie Piper and Steve Buscemi arriving for the global premiere of season two of Wednesday, at Central Hall in Westminster, London. The hook in season two is that Wednesday has a stalker. (She also has a black heart, so she's delighted with this.) Just like in season one, where she finally revealed the identity of a monster terrorising the school, we're given a raft of suspects for the baddy. Principal Barry Dort is in the frame because he's such an obvious dork. Billie Piper's superb character Miss Capri is a bit too perfect, so we have her card marked 'psycho' as well. Joanna Lumley is cropping up later as Wednesday's granny, so you'd think it wouldn't be her, which means it probably is But really, the enjoyment here is the lightness of touch, as the story sends up high-school dramas one minute, and super-violent horrors the next. Who knew that bleak evil could be so funny? My daughter for one. I loved watching it with her, laughing at the same jokes, telling her she was only slightly grumpier than Wednesday Addams. We've gone beyond those animated Disney shows like Frozen that were made to give Mom and Dad a laugh as well. You don't need to have watched season one of Wednesday to pick up on season two, but there is no good reason to miss TV this good. Give it a watch, with or without a teenager.

Dettori to show Netflix star and fellow jockey how to win at famous race meeting

Frankie Dettori is set to give a masterclass in winning at Ascot to one of the shining talents of this Saturday's Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup. The superstar jockey bid farewell to Britain at the end of 2023 and has since been tearing up the tracks in the US, where he's quickly become one of the leading jockeys. Dettori, who participated in 12 editions of the Shergar Cup during his time in Britain, is renowned for his exceptional skill at Ascot, boasting 81 wins at Royal Ascot and earning the title of leading rider seven times. His most memorable moment came in 1996 when he won all seven races on the card, an achievement that became known as 'Frankie's Magnificent Seven'. Despite being scheduled to ride at Saratoga in New York state this Saturday, Dettori has reached out to offer American jockey Katie Davis some insider advice on how to conquer the iconic British course. Davis, 33, hails from a family steeped in racing history, with her father, sister, and brother all being former or current successful jockeys. With over 340 wins under her belt in the US and multiple stakes victories, Davis is gearing up for her first-ever British race at Ascot this Saturday. Her six rides will include Miss Information, the victor of the Kensington Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, reports the Mirror. Frankie Dettori (centre) rode in 12 Shergar Cups (Image: PA) "We were both riding work for Wesley Ward when Frankie caught me off guard," Davis, who appeared in the popular Netflix documentary 'Race For The Crown', recalled. "He said, 'Don't you forget me. You gotta call me when the entries come out'. So we're going to Facetime. Trust me, I'm here to win." Davis joins the Rest Of The World squad alongside Hong Kong's Karis Teetan and Aussie Hugh Bowman, famed for his partnership with the legendary Winx, guiding her to 25 Group 1 triumphs. She enthused: "Words can't explain how much I am looking forward to it. I work well under pressure. It's more of an excitement for me. I will definitely enjoy every bit of it."

Thursday Murder Club trailer offers first look at David Tennant's character

The first full-length trailer for The Thursday Murder Club film has offered a first-look at the characters portrayed by David Tennant and Jonathan Pryce. The adaptation, based on the book series by game show host and author Richard Osman, follows a crime-busting group of retirees, played by: Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren; former James Bond actor Pierce Brosnan; Calendar Girls actress Celia Imrie; and Gandhi star, Ben Kingsley. Director Chris Columbus confirmed in an interview with entertainment news website Collider in April that Doctor Who star Tennant, 54, would play Ian, the owner of Coopers Chase retirement village, where the four retirees live, with Olivier-winning actor Pryce, 78, starring as Stephen, the husband of Mirren's character, Elizabeth. The trailer, which follows the release of a teaser in May, features a clip of Tennant with slicked back hair and a Dolce and Gabbana T-shirt looking angry. In another clip his character says: 'I'm not worried about the cantankerous old farts.' Meanwhile, Pryce is shown wearing a brown cardigan, blue shirt and glasses in his role as Elizabeth's husband, who suffers from dementia in the book. Among the other cast members are: Saltburn star Richard E Grant; Miranda's Tom Ellis; Mickey 17 actress Naomi Ackie; Line Of Duty star Daniel Mays; and Indian Summers actor, Henry Lloyd-Hughes. Dame Helen Mirren in action as Elizabeth (Giles Keyte/Netflix/PA) The trailer also shows Elizabeth, Ibrahim (Kingsley) and Ron (Brosnan), introducing themselves as the Thursday Murder Club to Imrie's character, Joyce, an ex-nurse who becomes the latest member of the group. Ackie, who plays a police constable, is seen investigating as is May's character who says: 'Police work is off-limits to anyone who isn't the police.' Elsewhere, Elizabeth receives a bouquet of flowers telling her to 'back off' and she is later seen bumping into a mysterious figure in the dead of night who tells her to not 'wake the dead.' Harry Potter director Columbus said: 'This is the finest cast I've worked with since Potter. 'They're just so incredibly well-prepared, and it's because they do everything. They do theatre, they do television, they do film, and they've developed those sorts of muscles.' Osman has written four Thursday Murder Club books with a fifth, The Impossible Fortune, set for publication in September. The TV star, 54, who became a household name on Pointless, left the hit TV quiz show in 2022 to concentrate on writing, having co-hosted alongside Alexander Armstrong since its debut in 2009. The Thursday Murder Club will land on Netflix on August 28.
