Vinted makes algorithm change to shopping feeds leaving customers fuming

VINTED users claim they're struggling to make sales after the marketplace made an apparent algorithm change to its app.
Social media forums have been flooded with comments from Vinted sellers who say their listings are suddenly getting no views and their sales have dropped dramatically.
One seller complained they hadn't sold anything in weeks.
"I've sold nothing since 10th of May! Literally nothing!!!! The price is ok and affordable," they said.
Another wrote: "I've gone from 500 views and really fast sales within a couple of hours listing to 5 views and no sales. I've reduced my prices significantly and still no takers. It's a junk yard."
Someone else said they had gone from selling £200 worth of items in two days to selling only one item in a week.
Vinted was approached by The Sun but did not confirm whether any particular changes had been made.
It has said it will sometimes test and trial changes or new features and will often ask users for feedback on them.
However Vinted users have suggested the algorithm may have changed - and they've also spotted changes to the app's layout.
Vinted is one of the most popular marketplace platforms in the UK, where you can buy and sell unwanted clothes.
More than 16million people in the UK are currently signed up to the site.
The app has a main newsfeed on its homepage where users are shown listings from sellers that they might be interested in.

Buyers can either browse items here or they can search for specific things they want.
Users recently noticed a change to the main newsfeed.
The home screen had previously shown buyers different sections including popular items, items they had favourited and items from different brands they had shown interest in.
Now it's been replaced by a large Recommended for You section.
Users can still scroll down to find their Favourites but the other sections have disappeared.
The Favourites section is also still visible on your user profile.
It's not clear whether the change to the newsfeed will have had any impact on sales for sellers.
But they say they're struggling to make sales because their items aren't getting enough views any more.
Some are blaming a possible algorithm change as well as the new layout.
One person complained: "Things that would get at least 20 views within a day are getting zero or stagnating at low views. Cant tell you how many times I've retaken photos/reuploaded and still NO CHANGE!"
Another said: "Had the same experience, has some things up for a few days that have 0 views."
While a third wrote: "Yes happening to me too, getting hardly any views and no favourites on items that normally gather likes quick. My items are not getting viewed… currently prioritising EBay …"
Other Vinted changes
Meanwhile, buyers claim the items they're being recommended by Vinted's algorithm are no longer items they would be interested in.
Some said their feeds were "weird" and showing them the same items repeatedly.
One person said: "I'm a buyer not a seller but recently the vinted algorithm went funky and has been showing me loads of stuff I've never searched for and am not interested in."
Another said their recommendations were "being flooded with s***** ornaments and homewares", adding that they hadn't bought or sold anything in weeks.
Vinted's algorithm looks at users' account preferences, history and interactions with listings to decide what items to recommend.
According to its website, it ranks where to show items on your newsfeed using factors including:
How recently an item was uploaded
The number of clicks and favourites it's had already
Where the seller is based
Price
The item's condition.
How to boost your Vinted sales
If you've noticed a dip in your sales, you should try these tricks from top sellers.
Long-time Vinted seller Melanie Monchar (@melaniemonch on Vinted), has more than 400 five-star reviews and has been selling for four years.
The mum-of-three told The Sun her checklist for making more sales:
Photos "stop the scroll" when buyers are looking so it's important they are clear, taken in natural lighting and show off the item. Iron any creases and make sure they look clean. Use a nice background.
Find the best title. Use keywords that buyers are searching for.
Price it right. Look what items sell for on Vinted and elsewhere. You can do this by looking on eBay using the 'sold items' function. Use the 'show only' filter on the left-hand side of the screen and then select 'sold items'.
Timing is everything. Think about the time of year you're selling - make sure your listings are seasonal. Melanie recently sold give summer dresses within an hour of them going live as hot weather hit the UK.
Use the description. Make sure you have a detailed description of each item, and include any flaws for transparency. Melanie likes to include measurements and fabric type, and she'll also use relevant hashtags in all her listings.
Another top seller, Chloe Chandler, has cashed in more than £4,000 through Vinted.
She says another common mistake people make is leaving items active for too long.
"After a month, say even three weeks, remove the item and re-upload it, especially during payday weekend," she says.

Time it right. If you upload just before the weekend it will maximise your chances of getting a sale because the weekend is the most popular time for people to browse Vinted. Bank Holidays are another great time to list items.
Sell complementary items at the same time. If you're selling a few items that work well together as an outfit, mention them in your description and point people towards your other items.
Mention trends. If your item fits into a certain fashion trend or style you should mention in the description. For example, "Y2K", "boyfriend jeans" or "quiet luxury".
Make your photos look their best. Your first photo should clearly show the entire item from the front. Photos are best taken against a plain, white or neutral background. With lighter-coloured items, use a darker background to create contrast. Capture multiple angles and take close-ups of details, including of any flaws. The more photos you take, the better.
Make sure the price is right. A good rule of thumb is that for items "new with tags" or "new without tags", a good suggested price is 60-80% of the retail price. For "very good" condition, try 40-60% of the retail price. For "good" or "satisfactory", go for 20-40%.

Margaret Thatcher's right-to-buy scheme has cost UK taxpayers almost £200bn, according to a report into the policy's contribution to Britain's housing crisis. In its report into the sale of millions of council homes to their tenants at steep discounts since 1980, the Common Wealth thinktank said the policy had fuelled vast shortages in social housing and turbocharged inequality. Describing it as one of the 'largest giveaways in UK history', it said the sale of 1.9m council homes in England had contributed to a situation where one in six private tenants in England now rents a former local authority home. Local authority tenants have been able to buy their homes since 1936, but changes made under the first Thatcher government in 1980 triggered a boom in sales at steep discounts to market value. Calculating the 'opportunity cost' of the sales, Common Wealth said the former council homes were now worth an estimated £430bn after taking account of inflation and the surge in property prices since 1980. Of this sum, the thinktank said £194bn represented the value that was effectively given away when the homes were sold at a discount. Between the years 1980-81 and 2023-24, the discount averaged 43% on the prevailing market price. The report comes as Angela Rayner, the deputy prime minister, pushes to tackle Britain's housing crisis by making sweeping changes to right to buy, including making it harder for tenants in England to buy their council home. Under the planned changes, eligibility for the scheme will be tightened. This will include extending the minimum time a council tenant must live in their home from three to 10 years before they can buy it at a discount. Right to buy was launched by Thatcher as a pitch to older working-class voters to build a 'property-owning democracy'. Although it helped millions of families into home ownership, it also dramatically depleted Britain's affordable housing stock as the homes were not replaced. After rising for decades, home ownership rates have fallen since 2004, and have collapsed among young adults. From a peak of more than half of 25- to 34-year-olds owning their own home in 1990, less than a quarter of young adults are now property owners,leading to a boom in private renting and many choosing to live with parents. After decades of sharply rising property prices, Common Wealth said, local authorities have lost the use of housing assets that could have either been sold at higher market values or used for social housing. Chris Hayes, the thinktank's chief economist, said: 'The severe financial straits facing councils should be seen in the context of a decades-long assault on local government, in which right to buy was a central pillar, denying councils discretion over how best to use assets that they had built. 'Now those assets are in dire shortage and councils still bear the heightened cost of seeing people through the housing crisis.' Many of the properties are now rented out, often to tenants on housing benefit at a cost to local authorities of more than £20bn year, while councils have lacked funding to replace the homes sold. The leftwing thinktank, which has links to senior Labour cabinet figures, said local government has been in 'net disinvestment' in every year but one since 1988-89 – meaning it sells more assets than it builds. A report earlier this year by the Centre for Cities found that returning the number of affordable homes back to 2010 levels would cost the government £50bn. Labour has pledged a 'social rent revolution', allocating £39bn of social and affordable homes over the next 10 years, alongside slashing planning rules to support private sector housebuilding. However, critics have warned that the government could struggle to hit its target to build 1.5m new homes in total. Kwajo Tweneboa, a social housing campaigner, said right to buy had 'gutted council housing and transferred public wealth into private hands'. 'We're in a housing emergency. Millions stuck on waiting lists. Tens of thousands living in temporary accommodation that's unfit and unsafe. All while homes that were once publicly owned are now profit-generating assets for private landlords,' he said.

Lions chief says tours will always be pinnacle despite rebel league threat

British & Irish Lions executives believe their tours will always remain rugby's pinnacle, despite the looming threat of rebel league R360. Those attempting to start a new franchise competition, including England 2003 World Cup winner Mike Tindall, want to establish eight men's and four women's teams. They claim to have signed up swathes of the world's best players, and have funding from billionaire backers. Their intention is to start a Formula 1-style circuit of matches across the world in cities such as London, Tokyo, Miami, Boston and Dubai. The new league intends to pay the world's top 40 rugby union players more than £1million a season, which will last just 14 weeks. They plan to avoid international rugby, so that their stars can play in Tests, although it remains to be seen whether national unions would sanction their players playing R360 matches. At present, England, Ireland and New Zealand have strict rules which dictate that players must play domestic rugby at home in order to be eligible for Test selection. However, while the provisional R360 calendar has left gaps for Test matches and World Cups, there seem to be no provisions for a men's Lions tour every four years. Ben Calveley, the Lions chief executive, has insisted that no one from R360 has contacted him or his organisation about their project. It is understood that several 2025 squad members have signed provisional deals to join the rebel circus if it starts with a soft launch this year, and a full tournament in 2026. Calvely insisted that British and Irish players will always want to play for the Lions, and would turn down R360 contracts to do so. 'No, we haven't had any formal discussions at all with R360 so I can't comment in any detail on their proposition and their proposal,' Calvely said. 'It's up to them who they want to make contact with. I don't really want to comment on how they manage their own business. 'What I can say, and you have seen these quotes come from players at every stage throughout the tour, is that they remain absolutely committed to the Lions. We talk about the Lions being the absolute pinnacle and I think it is for the players. Their reaction when they were selected, you could just see the emotion on their face, you could see what it meant to them.' Earlier on the tour, Lions captain Maro Itoje was asked about R360 and said: 'I don't know too much about that league but obviously players want to play for the Lions and that's not going to change for generations to come. 'It was the same in the 1950s and it will be the same in 2050. People want to play for their country. People want to play for the Lions. I am sure that will remain.' Calveley responded to that by adding: 'Hearing comments from the likes of Maro I think just firmed that up in people's minds that for these players to get on a Lions tour is the ultimate for them. This is very encouraging. 'We all know that we have our place in the calendar baked into regulation 9 and I wouldn't see that changing in the future. We have the support of our four shareholder unions. We have a partnership now with PRL and URC and with the clubs from those leagues. The same is true with the player associations and the players themselves. Our relationship with the professional game is better than it has ever been and I would see that continuing in the future. 'For me, what is encouraging is that our players remain committed to the Lions. I think we have seen on this tour just what it means, not just to them but to the fans and the whole of the game. We are very confident that our position in the future is secure.' Calveley is supportive of Andy Farrell returning as Lions coach in 2029, on the tour to New Zealand. Farrell himself said he loves the Lions concept, and is keen on a return to the job. The Lions bosses endorsed him for another trip in four years' time. 'Andy's done an incredible job and I have really enjoyed working with him,' Calveley added. 'Since he started full time back in December, he has brought a real focus to the operation which has ultimately resulted in success on the field of play. We will now give him a bit of time off. He can go back to Dublin and decompress a little bit and then he can start building for the autumn internationals in Ireland and building towards the World Cup in 2027. 'When it comes to our appointments for future tours, we will start the process in about two years and I don't think it would be right to comment on where it ends up, let's see. But certainly he has put himself in a very strong position hasn't he, let's put it that way.'
