Maharashtra govt rejigs committee to resolve border dispute with Karnataka
The Maharashtra government has reconstituted the high-powered committee to resolve the state's border dispute with neighbouring Karnataka.
According to a government resolution (GR) issued on Thursday, the committee, headed by chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, was reconstituted because crucial decisions regarding the border dispute need to be taken with consensus by a non-partisan and representative body.
From time to time, the committee has been reconstituted as new governments took office. A similar exercise had been carried out on November 22, 2022, months after the then Mahayuti alliance took charge with Eknath Shinde as the chief minister.
The committee has now been reconstituted following the formation of the new government, with Fadnavis as the CM, after last year's assembly polls.
Fadnavis heads the 18-member committee, which also includes his deputies Shinde and Ajit Pawar and former CMs Narayan Rane, Sharad Pawar and Prithviraj Chavan.
NCP (SP) MLAs Rohit Patil and Jayant Patil, ministers Chandrakant Patil, Shambhuraj Desai, Prakash Abitkar, Suresh Khade, BJP legislators Sudhir Gadgil, Sachin Kalyan Shetty, leaders of opposition in the legislative assembly and council are among the other members of the committee.
The Maharashtra assembly currently does not have a leader of opposition. Shiv Sena (UBT) and Congress legislators do not figure in the high-powered committee.
The border issue dates back to 1957 after the reorganisation of states on linguistic lines. Maharashtra sought to include Belagavi, which was part of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency, as it has a sizeable Marathi-speaking population. It also laid claim to over 800 Marathi-speaking villages that are currently in Karnataka.
Karnataka maintains the demarcation done on linguistic lines as per the States Reorganisation Act and the 1967 Mahajan Commission Report as final.

Underlining that global events like Israel- Iran and Russia-Ukraine wars are having an impact on the domestic economic activity, Shah said business chambers should engage professional bodies to be relevant, which is possible if they continue to make necessary changes in their functioning. Sambhal violence: Charge sheet details SP MP Barq's conversation with Jama Masjid president
MEERUT The UP Police's Special Investigation Team (SIT) has named Samajwadi Party MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq and Jama Masjid Committee president Zafar Ali as the main conspirators in the violence that broke out near Sambhal's Shahi Jama Masjid in November last year. The 1,100-page charge sheet filed in the case highlights a conspiracy to obstruct the lawful survey through mob mobilisation and incitement. According to the charge sheet, the SP MP's personal assistant's father, Rizwan, an electrician at the mosque, also played a pivotal role in assembling the mob. (File Photo) 'The charge sheet details multiple conversations that took place between Barq and Shahi Jama Masjid's president Zafar Ali from November 22 to 24. They conspired to stop the court-ordered survey and were responsible for gathering the crowd on November 24, the day on which widespread violence broke out,' said SP (Sambhal) KK Bishnoi. According to the charge sheet, the SP MP's personal assistant's father, Rizwan, an electrician at the mosque, also played a pivotal role in assembling the mob. Acting on the instructions of Barq, Rizwan made several calls to people from areas around the Jama Masjid and from Sarai Tareen, urging them to gather in large numbers to prevent the survey scheduled for November 24. Rizwan's call detail records (CDRs), reviewed by the police, corroborated this account. Investigation revealed that individuals contacted by Rizwan were also directly involved in orchestrating the violence. Their participation was confirmed through phone conversations and subsequent evidence gathered during the probe. In total, 23 individuals have been named as accused in the charge sheet. Some have been arrested, while others have been served notices under Section 35(3) of the Criminal Procedure Code. The charge sheet states that Zafar Ali, the mosque committee president, first received information about the impending survey late on November 23. He immediately informed MP Barq, who responded that the survey must not be allowed to proceed and instructed for a crowd to be gathered. Barq held multiple conversations with Rizwan that night, directing him to organise resistance. The next morning, a large crowd assembled, ultimately resulting in violent clashes, it further stated. Zafar Ali is also accused of holding a press conference after the incident and issuing misleading statements about the events and the legality of the survey. Despite multiple rounds of questioning, he failed to provide any substantial evidence and eventually admitted that the MP had instructed the gathering of the crowd. Zafar Ali has been in judicial custody since March 23. In addition to Zafar Ali, five other office-bearers of the Jama Masjid Committee have been named as accused. While none of these five have been arrested, they have been served legal notices under Section 35(3). The SIT has recorded statements of 14 key witnesses, including police officers and advocates, who were present during the violence. These testimonies, the charge sheet notes, are critical and provide first-hand accounts of the events as they unfolded. The son of SP MLA Iqbal Mehmood, Suhail Iqbal, who was initially named in the FIR along with 700–800 unidentified individuals, has been given a clean chit by the SIT. Though his presence at the site was confirmed, no active role in instigating or participating in the violence was found. A controversial speech delivered by MP Zia-ur-Rehman Barq on November 22 outside the Jama Masjid has been cited as a major trigger in the charge sheet. In his speech, Barq had stated that the mosque's survey was illegal and declared that 'this was a mosque and will remain a mosque.' The SIT argues that this inflammatory statement created a highly sensitive atmosphere, directly contributing to the violence that erupted two days later. The speech has been included as evidence and will be presented in court. Notably, Barq, protected by a high court stay on arrest, was questioned for four hours on April 8 in Delhi. Zafar Ali was arrested in March based on 'emerging evidence' of his involvement. With his bail applications rejected, Ali, also a practicing lawyer, remains in jail.

Cabin crew sacking: More trouble brews for Air India amid CBI probe demand
New Delhi: Air India, currently reeling under the devastating AI 171 Boeing 787 Dreamliner crash that killed at least 270 people, including 241 passengers and crew members, on Friday faced more heat as the Aviation Industry Employees' Guild (AIEG) demanded a CBI probe into the sacking of two cabin crew members by the airline for reporting a technical fault in the aircraft last year. AIEG General Secretary, George Abraham, told IANS that they have demanded a CBI probe into the sacking of two cabin crew members, as this move, after pressure on them by Air India to change their statements after reporting a technical fault in the Dreamliner 787 aircraft, is a very serious matter. "This poses a threat to the safety of the aviation sector. We have also written a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a fair probe into the matter," Abraham said. He further stated that on May 14, 2024, after the Air India flight from Mumbai to London reached its destination, the slide rafts opened in manual mode due to a technical fault in the door of the aircraft. According to Abraham, the slide rafts are activated only when the plane is in automatic mode. The pilot and the entire cabin crew had also admitted the technical fault in the plane in their initial statements, but due to alleged pressure from the airline's management, the statement was later changed. Abraham said that to suppress the technical fault in the plane, the Air India management allegedly pressured these people to change their statement, and when they refused, both these crew members were fired from their jobs. Speaking to IANS, Abraham further said that due to the seriousness of the matter, both these crew complained about the matter to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the regulator called them to Delhi and heard the whole matter and talked about conducting an "informal investigation". However, eight months have passed, but no result of the "informal investigation" has come out, he noted. According to Abraham, after the deadly Ahmedabad plane crash, the attention of the government and the people is back on this issue. "This is why we have raised it once again and written a letter to PM Modi. We hope that this investigation will be expedited," he said. In a statement to IANS, the airline on Friday said that the "said cabin crew members were terminated for their misconduct and behaviour and continuing to falsify critical information during the course of an investigation". "The said investigation was launched after an emergency slide was activated while opening the aircraft door post landing," said Air India. Slide rafts deploy when a door is opened in "armed" or "automatic mode". The crew alleged the Dreamliner's door had malfunctioned as the slide raft deployed, though the door was opened in the "manual mode". The incident is reported to have occurred on May 14 last year, after the Mumbai-London flight AI-129 docked at Heathrow airport and the passengers disembarked. The two former senior cabin crew members have written to PM Modi, alleging they were wrongfully terminated last year after raising an alarm over technical issues in the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The letter claimed that, "the said accident was waiting to happen as our various statements and contentions relating to the technical aspects and defects in the Aircraft – (Dreamliner Aircraft B787/8 Series), were deliberately pulled under the carpet, ignored, overlooked or not considered seriously for reasons best known to Air India Ltd management (AI) and the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA)". The crew claimed the crash was "waiting to happen", and that their repeated warnings about aircraft defects -- especially a 2024 incident involving Dreamliner VT-ANQ -- were ignored by Air India and the DGCA. However, the signatories allege they were later pressured to change their statements, and when they refused, they were sacked without a proper enquiry. "We fail to understand why an informal discussion instead of an impartial full-fledged enquiry was sought to be conducted by DGCA, the Regulatory Authority, when such a grave incident relating to passenger and crew safety was reported," the letter read.
