Scourge of the Pokemon gangs: Thieves tear open packs and even chase delivery vans to get hands on cards that can be worth thousands

Daily Mail4 days ago
Criminal gangs have forced retailer HMV to withdraw Pokemon trading cards worth thousands from its shop floors and online.
Phil Halliday, boss of the high street chain, told The Mail on Sunday that demand for the cards has become so intense that even its delivery vans are being targeted.
Mr Halliday said: 'They're phenomenally sought after. [So there is] a rabid threat of theft.'
The flagship store on London 's Oxford Street has seen thieves breaking in to search for rare cards that they can sell to collectors for large profits.
Mr Halliday added: 'We got broken into here at the Oxford Street store – the theory was they went straight to the back of the shop to try and see where these Pokemon cards were.
'We had people chasing a DHL delivery van because they thought there were Pokemon cards in it.'
HMV keeps the packs, pictured, behind the shop counter and limits sales to four per customer.
'We can't keep them anywhere near [the shop floor], they are all behind the counter,' Mr Halliday said.
He added: 'They are also very easy to shove down your trousers when you're on the run.'
HMV no longer sells them online because the site is attacked by bots, which are programmed to buy as many as possible as fast as possible.
The company also removed information from its website about stock levels in stores.
Pokemon cards, which depict cartoon monsters that are used by their 'trainers' to battle each other, exploded in popularity in the 1990s and continue to attract new generations of fans.
The characters also inspired a long-running Japanese cartoon series and numerous video games and merchandise.
Rare cards command huge prices on the resale market.
One set, featuring a Charizard dragon character from 1999, is on sale for £25,000 on eBay.
In 2022, American YouTuber Logan Paul set a record when he bought an ultra-rare Pikachu Illustrator Pokemon card for £3.9million.
In May a man was arrested in Manchester after police found stolen Pokemon cards worth about £250,000 during a raid on his house.
Last November a man in Polegate, East Sussex, admitted stealing a Pokemon card valued at £30,000.
It was found for sale on Facebook but police returned it to its owner.
And earlier this month, a heist occurred in the American state of Massachusetts, with the thief stealing £84,000 worth of rare cards.
Pokemon cards are not the only childhood toys being targeted.
Lego is attractive to thieves because rare 'collectable' sets command high prices and are difficult to trace.

Love Island spoilers: Entire villa floored as two original stars return as bombshells in fallout from brutal double dumping

The remaining Love Islanders are floored after two original stars return to the villa as bombshells in the aftermath of the double dumping. Wednesday's episode of the ITV2 dating show will see Cach, Ty, Yasmin and Toni pick either Billykiss or Angel to send home. The awesome foursome were voted the favourite boys and girls of the villa during Tuesday's instalment. And they are all very torn on who they think should go. 'My head is very 50/50. I took a risk today kissing Toni… 'It didn't clear my mind completely. I was still really confused. Obviously I don't want Billykiss to go,' Cach says. And Toni - who brought Cach back into the main villa after Casa Amor - then gave her opinion. The pair were getting on well until her ex Harrison hinted that he still wanted to get to know her and she picked him at a recoupling ceremony. Since Harrison left the villa, Toni has been growing close to Cach again and she told him: 'If there was a recoupling tonight instead of a dumping, who would you pick? I think that will help you make your decision here.' Yasmin confesses: 'Angel hasn't been here that long… I'm not as close with her as I am with Billykiss.' Meanwhile Ty, who has been getting to know Angel, says: 'Angel has come in and I've had an instant connection with her. It's still very early days but it's blossoming well. 'We haven't had that much time here together…' After the shock dumping, the islanders are left lost for words when some familiar faces rock up at the villa. But who will they decide to dump from the Island? Later on in the instalment they receive a text that will certainly ruffle a few feathers. They are told that two bombshells are waiting for them outside of the villa to go on a date. The sexy singletons have no idea that it is in fact Megan and Blu who are waiting to show their faces. Megan was getting to know Conor, before she was brutally dumped and now he's cracking on with Shakira. Meanwhile Blu was dumped very early on during the series with no connection. The pair shocked viewers by making a dramatic entrance in the preview for tonight's show, after Maya Jama revealed the public had been voting to save their favourite islanders and Emma and Boris were immediately dumped from the villa. However, one more islander is still not safe as viewers voted for their favourite contestants, the other two boys and girls making up the bottom three are still at risk as their fate lies in the hands of their co-stars. An insider told MailOnline: 'Both left quite abruptly and definitely have unfinished business. 'We promised twists from the beginning and this is one the islanders won't see coming.' But it seems there's unfinished business, with the duo now back for a second shot at love Speaking of their return to the show, Megan said: 'I'm excited to go back in, I think I left quite abruptly and I'm going back in for some clarity. 'It was an easy decision to make. When you can't speak to people for a couple of weeks and have to watch them on telly every night, you want some answers.' Blu added: 'There's a bit of open space now and people know the game a little bit more, so hopefully the couple of girls I've got my eyes on are willing to explore. 'I told you all from the get go I'm not leaving and I'm not f***ing leaving!' Watch Love Island tonight on ITV2 or stream on ITVX.

Record number of police officers sacked amid drop in force numbers

A record number of police officers were sacked from forces in England and Wales in the past year, new figures show. Latest Home Office data reveals 426 officers were dismissed or had their contracts terminated in the 12 months to March. This is up 17% year on year from the previous record of 365 and more than double the number fired at the start of the decade, when 164 officers were dismissed in 2019/20. The latest 12-month period also saw 4,806 officers voluntarily leaving policing: the second-highest number since records began in 2006 and down slightly from the peak of 5,151 in 2023/24. The figures come as ministers have sought to tighten rules on standards to improve confidence in policing, while they have also faced warnings from forces that funding falls short to keep its existing workforce. A total of 146,442 full-time equivalent (FTE) police officers were in post at the end of March 2025, down almost 1% from 147,745 at the same point last year, which was the highest in modern times. Of the 43 police forces, the Metropolitan Police saw the largest drop of 1,022 FTE officers, down 3% from 34,315 to 33,293. Last month, plans for an average 2.3% rise in police spending per year faced backlash from police leaders, who warned a projected £1.2 billion shortfall will continue to grow and leave forces facing further cuts. Acting national chairwoman of the Police Federation, Tiff Lynch, had said: 'We will lose 10,000 experienced officers a year to resignation by the end of this spending review period, driven out by poor pay and unacceptable working conditions.' Chairman of the National Police Chiefs' Council Gavin Stephens added that the amount 'falls far short' of what is needed to fund Government plans and to maintain the existing workforce. Ministers have committed to recruiting 13,000 more neighbourhood policing officers by 2029, with 3,000 extra recruits to be in post by spring next year. Meanwhile, the figures show there was a 17% decrease in the number of new recruits joining police forces, 7,874 excluding transfers, compared to 9,492 the year before. This follows a 42% decrease in the year 2022/23, when 16,355 joined policing. Reacting to the figures, the Conservatives said the falling police numbers were a 'devastating blow' to neighbourhoods dealing with rising crime and anti-social behaviour. The figures cover the last three months of the former Conservative government, and the first nine months of Labour in power. Shadow home secretary Chris Philp said: 'Labour has let down policing and has let down the public. 'We need police to catch criminals, respond to 999 calls, investigate crime and patrol our streets. 'Labour has massively increased our taxes, squandered the money, and now they're reducing police numbers. The public are less safe as a result of Labour's incompetence.' A Home Office spokesperson said the Government is determined to re-build neighbourhood policing, and there will be an extra 3,000 officers and PCSOs in communities by March 2026 following a £200 million investment. The spokesperson added: 'Officer numbers have been stable since last July despite falling between March and June 2024, however, the promising increase in neighbourhood policing shows that we are finally seeing more officers on our streets'.
