ONCF Launches Special Summer Transport Plan to Serve Millions of Travelers
The comprehensive program, running from June 23 to September 14, aims to ensure a smooth, comfortable, and accessible travel experience for domestic travelers, Moroccan residents abroad (MRE), and tourists across the national rail network.
To meet the growing mobility demands during summer, ONCF will operate up to 237 trains daily. The Al Boraq high-speed network will maintain hourly service between Tangier, Kenitra, Rabat, and Casablanca from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with increased capacity during peak times.
The Al Atlas network will provide up to 70 intercity trains daily, including night services for long-distance travel on the Tangier-Oujda route. Night trains equipped with hotel-style compartments will ensure optimal comfort for overnight journeys.
Regional connections will see increased service to Mohammed V Airport with 38 daily trains from Casablanca, running hourly from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. The Casablanca-Rabat-Kenitra, Casablanca-Settat, and Casablanca-El Jadida routes will also benefit from reinforced service, with the El Jadida line reaching up to 24 trains per day.
ONCF is introducing several attractive summer offers to make train travel more accessible. The Yalla Morocco card, available until August 31 for MAD 50 ($5), offers a 30% discount on 10 journeys to any destination and train category.
Returning Moroccan expatriates can take advantage of the Ahlan rate, providing a 15% discount on one-way train tickets departing from Mohammed V Airport, Tangier, and Marrakech stations between June 23 and September 15.
For commuters, any three-month Navette subscription purchase includes three free round-trip tickets usable on Al Boraq, Al Atlas, or TNR trains.
Train passengers can also enjoy discounts of up to 40% from partners, including the Rabat Zoo, the National Museum Foundation, and the Train + Auto service, upon presenting their train tickets.
ONCF continues to modernize its services with the 'ONCF VOYAGES' mobile application, allowing users to purchase tickets online, choose seats, and access a personalized space. A 5% discount is offered for all purchases made through this application.
Throughout the summer, ONCF staff will be fully mobilized to assist travelers both at stations and onboard trains. Technical teams will be on alert 24/7 to ensure smooth traffic flow and respond efficiently to user needs.
The company says travelers can purchase tickets through multiple channels, including station ticket windows, automated ticket machines, the ONCF website, and through retail partners.
Railway sector growth and future plans
This summer plan comes as ONCF expects a record-breaking 2025, with revenue projected to exceed MAD 5 billion ($500 million), a 6% increase from 2024. Last year closed with exceptional growth, carrying more than 55 million passengers, a 4% increase from the previous year.
The high-speed Al Boraq service demonstrated continued appeal with more than 5.5 million passengers transported in 2024, representing a 5% growth compared to 2023. Freight activity also performed exceptionally well despite international economic disruptions, with 20 million tons of goods transported, a 17% increase from 2023.
In a historic development, King Mohammed VI launched construction work on the Kenitra-Marrakech High-Speed Rail Line on April 24. The 430-kilometer project will drastically reduce travel times, allowing journeys from Tangier to Marrakech in just 2 hours 40 minutes, saving over two hours compared to current durations.
Looking ahead, ONCF has awarded three contracts worth MAD 29 billion ($2.9 billion) for the acquisition of 168 new-generation trains. These contracts have been distributed to international companies: Alstom for 18 high-speed trains, CAF for 40 intercity trains, and Hyundai Rotem for 110 RER (rapid transit) trains.
This ambitious program aims to modernize ONCF's fleet, support projected growth in rail traffic, and advance development projects planned for 2030. These projects also include developing RER networks in major regions of the country, partly in preparation for the 2030 World Cup that Morocco will co-host with Spain and Portugal. Morocco's Coastal Fishing Industry Shows Mixed Results Through July 2025
Rabat — Morocco's coastal and traditional fishing sector experienced a challenging start to 2025, with overall production declining despite some bright spots in specific categories, according to the latest data from the National Office of Maritime Fishing. The total value of coastal and traditional fishing products marketed through the end of July reached MAD 6.14 billion ($ 682,513 million), representing a 3% decrease compared to the same period last year. The decline was more pronounced in volume terms, with total catch weight falling 16% to 523,765 tons. The fishing industry's performance showed significant variation across different species categories. Shellfish emerged as the standout performer, with values surging an impressive 309% year-over-year. Algae and white fish also posted strong gains, with values increasing 24% and 12% respectively. However, these gains were offset by declines in other key categories. Pelagic fish values dropped 10%, while mollusks and crustaceans saw more modest decreases of 3% and 2% respectively. Volume changes mirror value trends The volume data largely reflected the value patterns. Shellfish quantities jumped 293% to reach 117 tons, while algae volumes increased 16% to 6,880 tons. White fish catches also grew, rising 13% to 63,064 tons. On the declining side, pelagic fish volumes fell 20% to 412,542 tons, representing the largest category by volume. Mollusk catches decreased 16% to 36,986 tons, and crustacean volumes dropped 8% to 4,177 tons. Regional port performance differs The performance varied significantly between the country's Mediterranean and Atlantic fishing ports. Morocco's Mediterranean ports showed resilience, with total landings increasing 1% to 9,624 tons through July, seeing catch values grow 2% to MAD 463.2 million ($ 51.48 million). In contrast, Atlantic Ocean ports, which handle the bulk of Morocco's fishing production, experienced a more challenging period. Landings at these ports fell 17% to 514,141 tons, while values declined 3% to MAD 5.68 billion ($ 631.38 million). Industry outlook The mixed results signal Morocco's fishing industry's ongoing challenges, with traditional high-volume categories like pelagic fish under pressure while niche products like shellfish show remarkable growth. The disparity between Mediterranean and Atlantic port performance suggests regional factors may be influencing catch patterns and market dynamics. Moroccan Workers to Fill Labor Gap at Serbian Fiat Factory
Marrakech – Eight hundred workers from Morocco and Nepal will be employed at the Fiat factory in Kragujevac, Serbia, according to Serbian media reports. This decision comes as the factory struggles to find local workers willing to accept the offered wages. According to Serbian Television Kragujevac, City Councilor for Economy Radomir Erić confirmed the planned importation of foreign workers. The factory is moving forward with this plan despite approximately 9,000 unemployed people in Kragujevac. Jugoslav Ristić, the long-time leader of the Independent Trade Union of Kragujevac and the Zastava Oružje factory, explained that the arrival of foreign workers is no surprise. 'It's clear that workers from abroad will come, because for those wages, which are slightly more than RSD 70,000 ($663), people in Kragujevac are obviously not interested, as they cannot survive on that,' Ristić told the Beta agency. The average salary in Serbia is around RSD 108,000 ($1,022), while in Kragujevac it is several thousand dinars lower. At the Fiat factory, workers can earn about RSD 90,000 ($852), but only if they work every Saturday, exceeding the standard 40-hour workweek. Ristić noted that Morocco, with 37 million inhabitants, has a GDP more than three times smaller than Serbia's. This economic disparity makes Serbian wages potentially attractive to Moroccan workers despite being considered insufficient by locals. Read also: THAMM Plus: Italy Recruits Moroccan Professionals in Mechatronics This is not the first time Fiat has brought in foreign workers to its Kragujevac plant. The company previously employed Italian workers, paying them significantly more than Serbian workers – approximately €100 ($108) per day. Goran Milić, president of the regional committee of metalworkers for central Serbia from the Independent Trade Union, stated that domestic workers hired at Fiat typically stay only a few days before leaving, likely due to the low wages. Ristić believes the situation reflects broader economic policies. 'Our politicians long ago proclaimed that the number of our people leaving Serbia to work in the West should be equal to the number of those coming from abroad. The message is that Serbia must remain a zone of cheap labor. This is the policy of multinational companies, which our government supports,' he said. In a similar case, a plan to bring 80 Filipino welders to the 'Wacker Neuson' company in Serbia fell through due to tax issues. The company had expected foreign workers would pay only ten percent tax, which the state did not permit. Local Serbian welders typically earn about €2 ($2.16) per hour, while the same work abroad pays around €8 ($8.64) per hour, explaining the ongoing exodus of skilled Serbian workers to Western countries.
