Yet to say goodbye to Seong Gi-hun: Lee Jung-jae on his popular 'Squid Game' character

Time of India13 hours ago

South Korean Superstar Lee Jung-Jae says he is yet to say goodbye to player number 456 or Seong Gi-hun though the third and final season of "Squid Game", the globally popular Netflix series, has wrapped production.
Lee shot to international stardom with his performance as the perpetually down-on-his-luck yet kind-hearted Gi-hun in the first season of the smash hit Netflix series in 2021. He won a Primetime Emmy award and multiple other trophies for the show.
He returned for the much-anticipated second season in 2024 and is now awaiting the release of the third season on June 27.
"We haven't released season three yet and we still don't know how the audiences are going to respond to season three, I haven't said goodbye to Gi-hun yet although we have wrapped production.
"As an actor and as part of those that have created the show, I feel like seeing how the audience responds to it is also part of the journey. So when we get to do that, then I think I'll be ready to say goodbye," Lee told PTI in a virtual interview through the help of an interpreter.
"Squid Game", created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, revolves around a deadly contest where 456 players, all facing financial hardship, play a series of deadly children's games to win 45.6 billion won in prize money.

At the end of the first season, Gi-hun won the prize money but instead of going back to his life, he set out to end the deadly games for good.
The second season saw Gi-hun return to the games with a mission - to uncover the true identity of the mastermind. Whether he succeeds in his mission or not will be revealed in the upcoming third season.
Lee, 52, a renowned face in the South Korean film and television industry with credits such as "An Affair", "Il Mare", "The Housemaid", "Hunt" and drama series "Chief of Staff", said while playing Gi-hun he was reminded of values people tend to overlook in daily life.
"The biggest lessons that I felt by portraying Gi-hun and also through 'Squid Game', is that there are so many things that we think we are aware of, but we tend to forget in life.
"Some of them being the importance of understanding other people and genuinely helping others when they are in need. 'Squid Game' is definitely a show that has given me the opportunity to reflect and look back on these important messages," he said.
The actor said people often ask how similar he is to Gi-hun and he believes they share many traits.
"As I'm the actor who portrayed Gi-hun, my own interpretation of the character went into creating him. So we are quite similar," he said.
Asked about the reason why Korean storytellers tend to tackle issues like inequality and the gap between rich and poor with nuance, Lee said it is not unusual as the Korean entertainment industry loves to explore a variety of themes.
"And these themes are explored in a very free way through which a lot of different messages can be conveyed. I think that's the power that recent Korean content has.
"Whether it's a social message or political or even if it's about romance, when we explore a particular theme, we dive into it, really get to the heart of it all, and try to express it in as free a way as possible. That's what's unique about Korean content and also why it's so powerful these days," he said.
Season three of "Squid Game" will also feature Lee Byung-hun, Wi Ha-joon, Im Si-wan, Park Sung-hoon, Kang Ha-neul, Park Gyu-young, Yang Dong-geun, Jo Yu-ri, Lee David, and Roh Jae-won.

Is Saquon Barkley retiring? The Philadelphia Eagles' running back's eerie remarks leaves fans questioning

Saquon Barkley's recent comments about a sudden retirement sparked a frenzy (Image via AP) Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley may have sparked a social media frenzy with his recent comments about retirement, but those closest to him aren't hitting the panic button just yet. In fact, two of his Eagles teammates—Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship—believe the media and fans are reading too much into a casual reflection from the star rusher. Saquon Barkley says retirement could come 'out of nowhere' like Barry Sanders Saquon Barkley's comments came during an appearance on the Green Light with Chris Long podcast, where he shared how he envisions stepping away from football someday. SAQUON BARKLEY'S Madden 26 Cover & Philadelphia Eagles Dominance + Big Dom Eats Cannolis 'I'll probably be one of those guys that it'll be out of nowhere,' Barkley said. 'I'll probably just wake up one day, whether it's next year or two years or four years, and just be like, 'Yeah it's over.' I don't think I will ever lose that passion. I'm just a competitor... One of my favorite players of all time, probably my favorite player of all time, is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that. Maybe one day it will be out of nowhere. I'll probably be balling and just be like, yeah, and call it quits.' While the internet erupted with theories suggesting Barkley might be planning an imminent departure from the game, the full context of his remarks paints a different picture. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo At 28, Barkley is still in his prime, and his passion for the game remains evident. Teammates say saq7Barkley's not leaving anytime soon During an episode of the Exciting Mics podcast, Eagles defenders Cooper DeJean and Reed Blankenship weighed in on the sudden buzz and offered their take—based on daily experience with Barkley himself. 'Our teammate, Saquon Barkley, said that he'll likely be one of those guys to retire out of nowhere,' DeJean said. 'I just saw that,' Blankenship replied. 'A lot of guys honestly say that, though. I think (Darius Slay) has said that before. You know (Brandon Graham), people like that. I mean, if it's over, it's over.' 'I don't think it's anytime soon,' DeJean added. 'No, no, I don't think so either,' Blankenship concluded. 'He's in a great position where if he was, he's put his time in, man.' OnlyFans creator Gabriella Zuniga sparks controversy by selling s*x tape amid ongoing $50M lawsuit against Shannon Sharpe

Gabriella Zuniga is now offering a s*x tape to subscribers, intensifying the legal battle with Shannon Sharpe (Images via Instagram and Getty Images) The legal battle between former NFL star Shannon Sharpe and OnlyFans creator Gabriella Zuniga has taken an even more sensational turn. Zuniga, also known online as "Karli," is now offering a s*x tape to subscribers who tip over $2,000—despite being in the midst of a $50 million lawsuit against Sharpe, which includes serious allegations of sexual assault, emotional abuse, and coercion. Gabriella Zuniga's explicit content offer raises public and legal questions At just 21 years old, Gabriella Zuniga's decision to promote adult content while pursuing a high-profile legal case has ignited a firestorm of debate online. Critics argue her move could damage her credibility and shift public perception of the lawsuit. Supporters counter that she's continuing her career as an adult content creator, independent of the case at hand. Notably, Zuniga has not confirmed whether the tape involves Sharpe, a point that adds ambiguity and intrigue to an already explosive case. Given the legal implications, it seems unlikely she would directly tie the content to the former athlete, though the timing of her announcement has undeniably complicated the narrative. Legal teams release conflicting evidence in heated court battle Represented by high-profile attorney Tony Buzbee—known for taking on Deshaun Watson and Sean 'Diddy' Combs—Zuniga alleges a disturbing pattern of manipulation by Sharpe. This includes claims of non-consensual recordings and threats of violence. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo Buzbee released audio recordings in which Sharpe allegedly states he would "choke" her, painting a picture of abuse behind the scenes. Sharpe, 56, has firmly denied all allegations through his lawyer, Lanny Davis, calling the lawsuit 'an extortion attempt.' In response, Davis released explicit messages that appear to show a consensual relationship between the two. One message reportedly even features Zuniga expressing a desire to have Sharpe's child. According to court documents, the two met at a Los Angeles gym in 2023, when Zuniga was just 19. She claims their relationship evolved from flirtation to deep emotional and psychological distress. Career fallout and postponed projects for Shannon Sharpe The scandal has already had serious career repercussions for Sharpe. Once on the brink of signing a $100 million media deal, the NFL Hall of Famer has since stepped away from First Take and postponed his Nightcap podcast tour with co-host Chad 'Ochocinco' Johnson. 'We've decided to postpone the Nightcap tour,' Sharpe stated. 'We look forward to seeing you guys in the summer of 2026. It's going to be even bigger, even better.'
