Meet Aditi Satish Hegde: A swimming sensation from Nashik, shining bright at Khelo India Youth Games 2025
The Nashik girl's success was not only by way of winning three gold and two bronze in individual events but also in the manner in which she clipped the times from the last edition in each of the five events that he competed in both Chennai and Gaya. The best example of this is the 800m Freestyle, where she won only bronze but cut a whopping 19.42 seconds from last year.
Aditi's three individual gold medals in the KIYG 2025 Bihar came in 200m Freestyle (2:09.51), 400m Freestyle (4:32.87) and 100m butterfly (1:04.73) while she picked up bronze in 800m Freestyle (9:28.20) and 1500m Freestyle (18:22.97). She also was part of Maharashtra's teams that won gold in 4x100m Freestyle and 4x100m Medley. The 50m Freestyle, was the only even in which she did not win a medal.
The medals did not come by a stroke of luck but were the result of a lot of effort in the lead-up to the event. The National Games competition in Haldwani (Uttarakhand) earlier this year gave an indication how Aditi Satish Hegde was shaping up, winning bronze medals in the 200m Freestyle and 400m Freestyle events and playing a part in Maharashtra's five silver and one bronze medal in the relays.
A Khelo India (KI) Athlete, who trains at the KI-accredited Agnel Charities in Navi Mumbai, she is self-admittedly a shy lass when out of the pool and answers questions in mono-syllables, but when she dives into the pool, she expresses herself in a manner born. Her body language is that of a champion, clean, graceful movements backed by a competitive spirit. It's a deadly combination.
In her last race of the competition, the gruelling 1500m Freestyle on Friday, Aditi struggled for quite a few laps but encouraged by her mother, Radhika Hegde, from the sidelines, she earned a podium finish. It highlighted her competitive spirit even though she was not at her best.
The Khelo India Youth Games 2025 Bihar saw a glittering girl who had started swimming under the guidance of diligent coaches Shankar Madgundi and Vikas Bhadange at the Rajmata Jijau Swimming Pool, Nashik Road. On the evidence of the improvement shown in the past year, there can be no doubt that the best is ahead Aditi Satish Hegde. Remember the name!

Khelo India Water Sports Festival mascot released
The mascot for the first ever Khelo India Water Sports Festival (KIWSF), which will be held at the iconic Dal Lake from August 21 to 23 featuring more than 400 athletes from all over the country, was unveiled in Srinagar on Thursday (August 14, 2025). The Himalayan Kingfisher will be the mascot for the festival which is a part of the Khelo India calendar. Before this, the inaugural Khelo India Beach Games were held in Diu in May this year. "The Himalayan the spirit of adventure, nature, and competition in the Games. With its bold orange and blue, it represents energy, tranquillity, and the beauty of Kashmir," stated a press release from the Sports Authority of India. The festival will be hosted by the Jammu and Kashmir Sports Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Sports Authority of India. For Jammu and Kashmir, this will be the second Khelo India event after Gulmarg hosted the snow events of the Khelo India Winter Games in March. The KIWSF will feature rowing, canoeing and kayaking as medal events. The demonstration events will be water skiing, shikara race and dragon boat race. More than 400 athletes from 36 states and Union Territories are expected in Srinagar. J&K's Minister for Youth Services and Sports Satish Sharma, and the Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA), Zadibal, Tanvir Sadiq, released the mascot and the logo. The official kits of the Games were also revealed. "Gulmarg has already become the winter games capital of the country, and now Dal Lake will become the water sports hub of the country," said Sadiq.

How memories of a late father, guidance from senior pro helped teen long jumper Shahnavaz Khan to biggest medal of young career
ON THE most important day of his budding career, 18-year-old long jumper Shahnavaz Khan took a moment to remember his late father Naseemudin. Before stepping onto the runway to compete in the final of the World Athletics Bronze Level Continental Tour at the Kalinga Stadium on Sunday, he wrote a message on the back of his bib. It read: '8+ jump, I miss dad.' Youngest of the 12 jumpers in the final comprising some of India's best, the teenager stunned the field with 8.04 metres — his personal best — in the fourth round to go into the lead before Commonwealth Games and Asian Games medallist Murali Sreeshankar fought back to clinch gold with 8.13 metres. Posing for photographers after the contest, an emotional Shahnavaz held up the bib across his chest. Entering the 8-metre club, rewriting his own Under-18 national record, his father's memory inspiring him to give his best, and a silver medal around his neck made it a special evening for the long jumper from Sangrampur village in Pratapgarh, Uttar Pradesh. 'Writing on the back of the bib was my way of a tribute to my father who passed away in 2018 because of an ailment. He drove a truck. I miss him,' Shahnavaz told The Indian Express on Tuesday. The 8-metre mark, like the 80-metre mark in men's javelin, is a benchmark which separates the wheat from the chaff. 'I wanted to cross the 8-metre mark desperately. I jumped 7.90 metres in my last competition, so I knew I was close to the 8-metre mark,' Shahnavaz said. He didn't appear to be overawed by the occasion as he raised his arms over his head and exulted while facing the spectators at the stadium. This wasn't a flash-in-the-pan performance by Shahnavaz, a consistent performer at age-group level. In December 2024, he became the Under-18 national champion with a jump of 7.72 metres and at the start of this year, won the National Games gold with 7.70 metres. He also has Sreeshankar to thank for prompt advice after two consecutive fouls, in the second and third rounds, in Bhubaneswar. 'Bhaiyya, foul ho raha hai bahut (Brother, I am fouling a lot),' Shahnavaz had said. 'Control your run-up and jump,' Sreeshankar had replied. The senior and junior jumpers train at the Sports Authority of India's National Centre of Excellence in Thiruvananthapuram and being able to pick the senior's brains helped Shahnavaz. 'It's good training with Sreeshankar. He tells me a lot of vital things. Whatever mistakes I make, he tells me how to correct them,' Shahnavaz, a JSW Sports athlete, said. Sreeshankar is pleased that Shahnavaz was able to cross the 8-metre mark at a major competition. 'I'm very happy for Shahnavaz, he did above 8 metres. He's very young. We train together, we push each other. And we have a very good rapport,' Sreeshankar said. Shahnavaz is rubbing shoulders with the best now but his early inspiration was his cousin Shahruk Khan, the Under-20 3,000 metres steeplechase national-record holder, who is also from his village. 'I picked up the long jump because I found jumping to be easier than running. Running has never been easy for me,' Shahnavaz said. Soon he was finishing on the podium at district competitions. 'I got a certain thrill from flying over the pit. I love it when I am in the air,' he said. With his first-ever international medal in the bag, Shahnavaz is dreaming big. 'I want to represent India at every major competition like the Olympics, Asian Games and Commonwealth Games. The 8-metre jump has given me confidence,' he said. However, Shahnavaz has a grouse – he is yet to receive the prize money for winning the National Games gold. His mother runs the house, while his younger sister and brother are still in school. 'My mother looks after the house and also works in the fields. That is how she manages to run the household. Every penny is important for our family. It has been more than six months since I won the gold medal at the National Games representing Uttar Pradesh but I haven't got the prize money announced for the gold medallists,' he said. The silver at the Continental Tour event, Shahnavaz hopes, will pave the way for more prize money and bigger medals. 'Hopefully, I can go from strength to strength and emulate Sreeshankar.'

Bills on sports will help sportsmen improve performance in sporting events globally: Mansukh Mandaviya
Synopsis Parliament has approved two new sports bills aimed at enhancing India's performance in global sporting events. Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that the National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, seek to improve coordination between sports federations, athletes, and the government, addressing issues like 'legal paralysis' and lack of accountability. ANI Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya New Delhi: Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday said the two new bills on sports, approved by Parliament, will help sportsmen improve their performance in sporting events globally. The National Anti-Doping (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and The National Sports Governance Bill, 2025, were passed by the Rajya Sabha by voice vote. These bills were earlier approved by the Lok these bills, the minister said federations governing various sports were embroiled in legal matters, terming the situation as 'legal paralysis'.He noted that the situation impacts the performance of the sports governance bill is meant to improve coordination between sports federations, athletes and the government.
