Why did you hide Reddit account? Indian student faces US visa scrutiny

India Today7 hours ago
When a student from Maharashtra applying for a US F-1 visa walked in for her interview, she didn't expect her Reddit activity to come under scrutiny. She listed all other social media accounts, barring Reddit, where users mostly post anonymously. The student, who is facing visa scrutiny for not sharing her Reddit account, shared her experience with the consular officials – on Reddit.advertisementIdentified online as HoneyBee2029, the Maharashtra-based applicant said she was issued a 221(g) slip, which suspended the visa process temporarily till disclosure of full details. The officer delayed the visa process and flagged her Reddit account, even though it was public and had no objectionable content.
"If you have an interview coming up, then yes. Name all, literally all your social media handles you've created in the last 5 years. I've been on hold due to a petty Reddit account which I never used. So don't risk it. They definitely have AI assistance to track all your digital footprints," the Reddit user said.In a Reddit post recounting the experience, the student said the visa officer questioned why the Reddit handle hadn't been included in the DS-160 form. The student maintained that her profile was open and clean, but the officer claimed the account "was not visible" during an internal review. At the end of the interview, the officer issued the 221(g) form, asking the student to ensure that all social media handles were made public.'She mentioned that the account was not visible while it was an open account, and at the end of the interview, issued me a 221(g) slip requesting that I make all my social media handles public,' the student wrote, seeking advice on how to proceed with the process.Reddit users responded to the post, pointing out that linking social media profiles might have made it easier for the consular office to locate the account. One person noted, "Mate why are you posting your full name here? A google search shows your Reddit account. I think just wait for a response at this point and go from there.""If you don't need this Reddit account, you might as well close this one and create one later, after the interview, and you land in the US," suggested another person.WHY REDDIT IS UNDER SCANNER?A 221(g) form does not mean a visa rejection, it indicates the officer needs more information before making a final decision. All applicants for F, M, and J non-immigrant US visas, which are meant for students, have been ordered to make their social media profiles public.advertisementAs per the US State Department, this will allow thorough vetting of candidates. It added that the US visa is "a privilege, not a right", and its screening does not stop after a visa has been issued, and authorities may revoke it if one breaks the law."Effective immediately, all individuals applying for an F, M, or J nonimmigrant visa are requested to adjust the privacy settings on all of their social media accounts to public to facilitate vetting necessary to establish their identity and admissibility to the United States under US law," the US Embassy said in a notification on June 23.The provision for social media vetting for US visa applicants has been in place since 2019. However, the new announcements signal that foreign nationals will be subjected to an increased level of scrutiny. The enhanced surveillance comes amid President Trump's crackdown on immigration, leading to ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) raids on illegal immigrants. The Maharashtra student's case is an example of how strict the vetting is, and that all social media accounts need to be listed to avoid further scrutiny.- Ends

US designates Pakistani group LeT's proxy The Resistance Front as global terrorists over Pahalgam attack

The United States on Thursday (July 17) designated The Resistance Front (TRF) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization (FTO) and Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT), citing its role in the April 22 Pahalgam massacre in Kashmir that killed 26 civilians. Announcing the designation, Secretary of State Marco Rubio described TRF as a 'front and proxy' of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), which is already listed as a terrorist group by both the United Nations and the United States. 'These actions demonstrate the Trump administration's commitment to protecting our national security interests, countering terrorism, and enforcing President Trump's call for justice for the Pahalgam attack,' Rubio said in a statement. The Pahalgam terror attack shocked the region. Survivors told media that armed militants targeted Hindu civilians, reportedly separating women and children before ordering male victims to recite the Muslim declaration of faith. Most of the 26 victims were Hindus. TRF claimed responsibility for the massacre shortly after, though little was previously known about the group, a 'smokescreen' created by LeT to operate under a different name and mask its Pakistan-based support. In response to the Pahalgam killings, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeted strikes on terror networks across the Line of Control and into Pakistani territory. While Islamabad condemned the violence, it denied any connection to the attack or to TRF's operations. The US designation puts additional pressure on Pakistan to crack down on terror proxies operating from its soil. It also enables US authorities to block TRF's assets and prohibit material support to the group. The announcement marks a significant diplomatic step by the Trump administration, which has repeatedly signaled closer security ties with India amid shared concerns about regional terrorism and cross-border militancy.

Efforts on for safe return of Punjab farmer in Pak police custody, BSF tells family

Bathinda: Nearly four weeks after young Punjab farmer Amritpal Singh inadvertently crossed over into Pakistani territory from his field across the border fence, BSF has informed his family that efforts were being made for his safe return. The family received a letter Thursday from Punjab Frontier BSF headquarters that Pakistan police were investigating the case. Amritpal's family fears Pakistani authorities may suspect him of crossing over intentionally as a spy. In response to a letter from Amritpal's father, Jugraj Singh, to BSF headquarters on July 4, the border force has said Pakistan Rangers was being repeatedly approached for Amritpal's return. However, Pakistan Rangers has said he was in police custody and an "investigation" was in progress. Amritpal — a married man with an infant son — hails from Khere Ke Uttar village and has agricultural land in the jurisdiction of Rana Panjgrain, which is near the Zero Line. On June 21 afternoon, he signed the BSF register at the fence to cross over to his field but didn't sign out. Later, BSF personnel found footprints heading towards Pakistan and realised he had inadvertently crossed the border. On June 22, an FIR was registered and, five days later, BSF told his family Pakistan Rangers had confirmed he was in its custody. The family is desperate to get him back safely and has repeatedly approached BSF and other Indian authorities. Ferozepur MP Sher Singh Ghubaya met BSF DG Daljit Singh Chawdhary on July 5 and urged him to reach out to Pakistan Rangers through Punjab-based officials of BSF by holding flag meetings. On July 11, Jugraj met Punjab governor Gulab Chand Kataria, accompanied by BJP's Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi. The governor immediately had a telephonic conversation with BSF officials. Jugraj said they were living in anxiety and had been reaching out to civil and BSF authorities for nearly four weeks but to no avail.

CID to register case in the Kanke land scam

1 2 Ranchi: Police headquarters instructed the criminal investigation department (CID) to take over the case related to land scam involving hundreds of acres in Kanke block of Ranchi district. The scam is related to illegal transaction of tribal and gair mazirwa land by changing their nature. The role of land mafias, along with the employees of Kanke circle office and the National Informatics Centre (NIC), is under scanner in this connection. Director general of police (DGP) Anurag Gupta said, "I directed the CID to identify the persons, who manipulated the land records at the CO office and the NIC to alter the nature of land. The CID has also been urged to identify the beneficiaries, including land mafias and other big players." Police headquarters asked the CO office and the NIC to provide details of land records. The changes in nature of land have been made with and without the signature of CO officers. The involvement of NIC staffs is likely in cases where modifications are without signatures, sources said. Earlier, Jharkhand police had registered a case in this connection with Kanke police station and a special team under deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Amar Kumar Pandey started the investigation. Former Kanke CO staff Praveen Kumar Agrawal was arrested. Agrawal is an approver in the case for the Directorate of Enforcement (ED), which is investigating the case from money laundering point of view. The ED had on June 6 raided the Chandini Chowk-based flat of land mafia Kamlesh Kumar and seized Rs 1 crore in cash and 100 cartridges. Kamlesh was arrested on charges of attempting to occupy a Kanke-based land owned by a tribal in October 2021. On July 27, the ED interacted with villagers in Kanke after receiving complaints from them that land mafias have captured large areas, including tribal assets by changing nature of land and use of money and force. A villager, Parnu Oroan, alleged that people had lodged complaints with the local police station and the CO but the steps did not yield any result.
