France's culture minister to be tried for corruption

Dati, a 59-year-old who holds ambitions to become Paris mayor next year, was charged in 2019 on suspicions she lobbied for the Renault-Nissan carmaking group while at the European Union institution. She denies the allegations. Dati is accused of accepting €900,000 in lawyer's fees between 2010 and 2012 from a Netherlands-based subsidiary of Renault-Nissan, but not really working for them, while she was an MEP from 2009 to 2019. Investigations have sought to determine whether she was in fact lobbying in the European Parliament for the carmaker, an activity that is forbidden. Advertisement French investigating magistrates also ordered that Carlos Ghosn, the ex-tycoon of Renault-Nissan, be tried, the judicial source said. The 71-year-old, who has been living in Lebanon for years after escaping arrest in Japan, has also rejected the charges against him. A hearing on September 29th will decide on the date of the trial, the source said. According to another source following the case, the trial could be held after the Paris municipal elections, which will be held in March next year. Dati, a daughter of working-class North African immigrants, has repeatedly sought without success to have the charges against her quashed. She is a right-winger who served in Nicolas Sarkozy's government but has recently been brought back into government as culture minister under the centrist François Bayrou. Ghosn, the former chairman and chief executive of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, was arrested in Japan in November 2018 on suspicion of financial misconduct, before being sacked by Nissan's board in a unanimous decision. He jumped bail late the following year and made a dramatic escape from Japan hidden in an audio-equipment box, landing in Beirut, where he remains as an international fugitive. Both Japan and France have sought his arrest.

French culture minister and former Renault CEO will be tried for corruption

French Culture Minister Rachida Dati and former CEO of Renault-Nissan Carlos Ghosn are heading to trial. Investigating judges decided on Tuesday, July 22, after six years of proceedings initiated by a complaint from a minority shareholder of Renault SA, to refer them to a criminal court on corruption charges, a judicial source confirmed to Le Monde. Ghosn is under several international arrest warrants and is legally barred from leaving Lebanon, where he sought refuge in December 2019 after fleeing Japan, where he was incarcerated. In their order, in line with the indictment of France's National Financial Prosecutor's Office (PNF) delivered in November 2024, the judges determined that Dati should appear in court for "passive corruption and influence peddling by a person holding an elected public office within an international organization (in this case, the European Parliament)" and "concealment of abuse of power and breach of trust." As for Ghosn, he is to be tried for "abuse of power by a company executive," "breach of trust" and "active corruption and influence peddling."

Italy moves to safeguard fashion sector reputation following labour scandals

A few unlawful businesses in the fashion supply chain have tainted the image of ' Made in Italy ', Italy's industry minister said on Tuesday, adding that he is working on a certification scheme to remedy this after the latest high profile case. Cashmere company Loro Piana, controlled by French luxury group LVMH, was put under judicial administration last week after prosecutors uncovered evidence of worker abuses in its supply chain. The label was the fifth high-end brand to undergo such court monitoring in Italy since early 2024. "We cannot allow the illicit behaviour of a few to compromise the reputation of the entire sector, penalising many virtuous companies and, consequently, our Made in Italy brand, which is a symbol of excellence and quality," minister Adolfo Urso told fashion trade bodies during a meeting, according to a source. The ministry is working on a measure to certify the sustainability and legality of companies in the supply chain in advance, he added, so that brands do not have to answer for the conduct of their suppliers or subcontractors. Units of fashion brands Valentino, Dior, Armani and Italian handbag company Alviero Martini were previously placed under administration in Italy for similar alleged worker exploitation. In the case of Loro Piana, the Court of Milan found it "culpably failed" to adequately oversee its suppliers in order to pursue higher profits, according to the ruling. Prosecutors in that case said the violation of rules among fashion companies in Italy was "a generalised and consolidated manufacturing method". Italy is home to thousands of small manufacturers that make up 50%-55% of global luxury goods production, consultancy Bain has calculated. Italian legal and political authorities, fashion industry bodies and trade unions signed an action plan in May to fight worker exploitation in the apparel and accessories supply chain, after prosecutors uncovered widespread abuse.
