How much the Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ will set you back in SA
The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ is the German carmaker's latest performance offering to reach South Africa. Available exclusively as a saloon (other markets have the option of an estate), this Affalterbach missile is powered by a 330kW/560Nm 3.0 l six-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine paired to a 120kW/480Nm e-motor integrated into the vehicle's nine-speed AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission.
Total system output is rated at 430kW and 750Nm worth of torque; figures good enough to propel the E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ saloon from 0-100km/h in 4.0 seconds and on to an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h. Specify the optional AMG Dynamic Plus package and you'll have access to the carmaker's Race Start launch control system, which momentarily unlocks an extra 20kW. When activated, 0.2 seconds is shaved from the 0-100km/h dash. The vehicle's maximum speed is also increased to 280km/h.
Impressive straight-line performance aside, the E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ saloon offers a maximum 101km of pure electric driving range at speeds up to 140km/h courtesy of its 28.6kWh (21.22kWh usable) lithium-ion battery pack mounted beneath the boot floor. When plugged into a 60kW DC fast charger, the vehicle's battery can be brought from 10% to 80% charge in about 20 minutes. Maximum energy recuperation has been increased to 120kW, with three levels available using the rocker paddles on the steering wheel.
To handle this extra power, Mercedes-AMG have given the E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ saloon a stiffer body, wider front track, larger brakes and rear-wheel steering. 19" alloy wheels are fitted as standard though customers can upgrade to more substantial 20" or 21" forged alloy wheels. Other technical highlights include a unique AMG Ride Control steel sprung suspension system with specially tuned two-valve adaptive adjustable damping. Drivers can also switch between three preset damper modes: Comfort, Sport and Sport+.
Ensuring prodigious grip in all conditions is the AMG Performance 4Matic +all-wheel drive system. Featuring an electromechanically controlled clutch, it's designed to automatically vary the amount of torque distributed between the axles depending on the driving mode selected: Comfort, Sport, Sport+, Smoothness, Individual, Electric and Battery Hold.
Standout exterior tweaks come in the shape of an illuminated AMG radiator grille, more pronounced front wheel arches, bigger air intakes to help keep under-bonnet temps in check, a prominent rear diffuser and a pair of double exhaust tailpipes. The interior benefits from a MBUX multimedia system offering AMG-specific displays and features, illuminated trim in grey open-pore ash wood, electrically adjustable AMG sports seats upholstered in synthetic leather and an AMG steering wheel stitched in Nappa leather.
The Mercedes-AMG E 53 Hybrid 4Matic+ saloon is now available at dealerships and retails from R2,499,596. Pricing includes a five-year/100,000km service and maintenance plan.

Pricing sticker comes off AMG jabbed Mercedes-AMG CLE 53
Electrified 3.0-litre turbo straight-six swaps plug-in hybrid assistance, for mild-hybrid 'help' capable of producing an additional 17kW/205Nm for short spells. The new Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 is said to combine the best of two worlds — the agility and sportiness of the C-Class with the space and status of the E-Class, and you would have to be blind not to like what you see here. Electric but no plug I don't want to get over technical and lose you in the details, because so many buyers switch off immediately, for lack of better words, the moment anybody starts to talk about electric cars. Whereas the new AMG E53 is a plug-in hybrid that must be plugged in to be fully charged as the name suggests, the AMG CLE 53 is a mild-hybrid, and it does not need to, nor cannot not be plugged in to be fully charged, and it charges itself up from the conventional petrol engine and via brake regeneration. ALSO READ: Mercedes-Benz CLE leaves AMG finishing school as new AMG CLE 53 As with the E53, the CLE 53 makes use of a 3.0-litre straight-six turbocharged engine, but omits the plug-in hybrid for a 48-volt mild-hybrid system aided further by a new exhaust gas-driven turbo and electric compressor. The result is 330kW/560Nm, but for 12 seconds, an overboost function which lifts torque to 600 Nm is activated. What's more, the mild-hybrid system, known as EQ Boost, adds 17kW/205Nm of its own for short bursts. Interior sports a series of AMG bespoke fittings. Picture: Mercedes-AMG According to Mercedes-AMG, this means a top speed of 250km/h or 270km/h with the optional AMG Driver's Package included, and 0-100 km/h in 4.2 seconds. As with the E53, drive in the CLE 53 is directed to all four wheels through the 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive via the nine-speed MCT transmission. When driving moderately and in situations where all-wheel drive is not required, the front axle is completely decoupled. This increases efficiency. Buyers have the choice of the AMG Carbon and Night exterior packages. The standard wheels are 19-inch alloy wheels, though 20-inch wheels can be had as an option. And in drift mode, the car's programmed as a rear-wheel drive vehicle across the entire speed range. Typical visual identifying features are the long hood embedded in the front end with two powerful power domes. The sloping windshield and the elongated roof, which slopes towards the rear, also reference this. The passenger cell, which is set far back, leads to the sporty, short rear via the rear window, which is also flat. Bahn-storming, hybrid-assisted Mercedes-AMG E53 finally priced
Performance E-Class, with Race Start engaged, offers the same power as the 6.0-litre bi-turbo V12 that once powered the S65, CL65 and G65. Revealed last year, the E53 has finally arrived in South Africa. Picture: Mercedes-AMG The Mercedes-Benz E-Class has been one of the brand's most popular models for decades and they are building on this with the new AMG E53. The vehicle offers typical AMG driving pleasure with excellent responsiveness, great driving dynamics and a sporty design as to be expected. As a plug-in hybrid, the AMG E53 combines a high level of performance with efficiency. Electrically shocked Providing power is the combination of a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six and a 21.2-kWh battery powering an electric motor producing 120kW/480Nm on its own. With the straight-six's 330kW/560Nm included though, the E53 develops a combined 430kW/750Nm, the latter increasing to 450 kW momentarily with the Race Start system engaged. The claimed all-electric range is 100 km, with a top speed of 140 km/h possible without the need for the petrol engine. Interior has received a number of AMG specific touches. An on-board 11 kW AC charger is, however, included as standard. Outside Being an AMG, the E53 can be recognised by many special design elements. The AMG-specific radiator trim with vertical slats that are illuminated. Wider front fenders to accommodate the larger track width on the front axle. The outer air inlets, each with two vertical fins, and the central A-wing characterise the independent AMG front apron. E53 rides on 19-inch wheels as standard, though up to 21-inches can be had.
