Commerce Ministry hails Chinese investment in Oman
The ministry valued the role of Chinese companies in national priorities, mainly in the field of manufacturing and local content during the meeting of Dr Saleh bin Said Masan, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Investment Promotion for Commerce and Industry, with a number of Chinese investors.
The meeting coincided with the third session of the Omani-Chinese Friendship Forum 2025 , held in the Wilayat of Salalah in Dhofar Governorate.
The meeting discussed a number of enquiries submitted by the representatives of the mega Chinese companies operating in the Sultanate of Oman, which dealt with the available investment opportunities, the mechanisms of boosting the value of the local content and the facilities and incentives offered in the promising economic sectors.
Dr. Saleh bin Said Masan said that the efforts for boosting the local content take into account the balance between increasing the percentage of local participation and the efficiency of the projects and achievement of the investment feasibility.
He also pointed to efforts for facilitating the establishment of foreign companies, mainly with the launch of Invest in Oman Centre as a common outlet for offering the investment services, including issuance of the licences, the link with the government departments and availability of translation and technical support for Chinese investors.
He said that the government offers a number of incentives including the reduction of basic services, tax and customs exemptions and flexible facilities related to employment of foreign manpower as per the type of activity.
He said that there are promising investment opportunities in a number of sectors which witness increasing local demand such as building materials, food industries, medical equipment and renewable energy technologies among others.
On the legal procedures for cancellation or transfer of the shares of partners in the joint stock companies when they are outside Oman, he said that the law allows the use of official attested authorisations for this purpose.
The authorisations could be issued in China attested by Oman Embassy in China and through the Investors Services Portal in case of implementation of some online procedures, he added.

"We are close to reaching a deal," Danish Ambassador to India on EU-India trade negotiation
New Delhi: Denmark's ambassador to India, Rasmus Christensen, said that the European Union and India are close to making a trade deal, which is a testament to the fact that India is not a "dead economy," as touted by US President Donald Trump. In an interview with Christensen the diplomat said that Denmark sees India as a promising place to invest. "I certainly do not see India as a dead economy. On the contrary, it's world's fastest growing economy. And I think a testament to that fact is that the EU and India is negotiating a free trade agreement. I think that will be mutually beneficial," Christensen said. He said that Denmark views India as a promising place to conduct business, which contradicts Trump's claims. "So certainly from a Danish European perspective, we see India as a very promising place to invest and do business with. And that would not be the case if it was a dead economy," the Danish envoy said. He further said that though Denmark holds the rotating presidency of the European Union, all trade policies are thoroughly discussed among all member states and the EU is currently interested in exploring options to invest in India. "Indeed, Denmark currently holds the rotating presidency of the European Union. Although when it comes to trade policy, as we discussed, it's a responsibility of the EU Commission. But I think we do see a very significant momentum now in the negotiations between the EU and India, probably for all kinds of reasons. Certainly, the EU is also very interested in diversifying its trade relationships," he said. The Ambassador further said that India is an important player in trade with the EU and that now there is an urgency now to conclude the trade agreement. "India is an important player. And I think the same goes for India. So maybe the reason why we have been negotiating for so long was a certain lack of urgency. But I think the urgency is there now. And whether we can conclude it during our presidency in November or December, or whether it comes slightly later, nobody knows," Christensen said. "But I think we are close to reaching a deal. And I remain confident that we will reach a deal," he added. When asked if Europe saw India as a counterbalance to China, Christensen said that Europe is farther away from Asia, and now Europe is realising the downside of having to depend on one country for certain goods. "Of course, Europe is, in that sense, we are kind of a little bit far away from the Indo-Pacific. But I think if you look at it from a geoeconomic perspective, certainly in Europe, there is a growing realisation that, again, we need to diversify our economic partnerships. I think in Europe, in the past couple of years, I think we have also come to realise the reliance we have on one country in particular when it comes to imports of certain goods," he said. Christensen said that the EU is looking to diversify their trade ambit, noting that very few countries could contribute what China did through exports. "And we would like to diversify that. We will, the Europe will keep trading with China, but we would like to increase our trade with others and make sure that our supply chains are more diversified, that we can get access to goods, manufactured goods, whatever from different places. And I think, to be very honest, there are very few countries that could deliver what, for example, China has delivered to the global economy," he said. He futher noted that India is seen as the best alternative to China. "And India is probably the best example of that. So that's why, if you're sitting back in Brussels or Copenhagen or the European capitals and look out into the world, India is probably the upcoming alternative to what we've seen. So therefore, we will invest here," he said. (ANI)

Foreign Minister receives written message from Saudi counterpart
Muscat: Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, Foreign Minister, received a written message from Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The message is related to the bilateral relations between the two countries and matters of mutual interest. The message was handed over to Sheikh Khalifa bin Ali Al Harthy, Undersecretary of the Foreign Ministry for Political Affairs, when he received today Ibrahim bin Saad bin Bishan, Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Oman. The meeting was attended by Sheikh Ahmed bin Hashil Al Maskari, Head of the GCC and Regional Neighbourhood Department at the Foreign Ministry.

Plastic-Free Market initiative launched in North Al Sharqiyah
Sinaw: The Environment Authority today launched the "Plastic-Free Market" initiative in several traditional open-air markets across the North A'Sharqiyah Governorate, as part of its ongoing efforts to implement the third phase of Ministerial Decision No. (8/2024) regarding the ban on plastic shopping bags. Mohammed Amer Al Hajri, Director of the Environment Department in the governorate, explained that the initiative includes an awareness week targeting commercial outlets and traditional markets in the wilayats of North A'Sharqiyah. The campaign began today with a visit to the 'Thursday Market' in the Wilayat of Sinaw and will continue next week to cover the 'Monday Market' in Wadi Bani Khalid, the 'Tuesday Markets' in Al Mudhaibi and Bidiyah, the 'Wednesday Market' in Ibra, as well as traditional markets in the wilayats of Al Qabil and Dima wa Al-Ta'een. He clarified that the initiative aims to raise environmental awareness among vendors and marketgoers by educating them on the importance of reducing plastic bag usage and replacing them with eco-friendly alternatives. Al Hajri noted that the campaign includes distributing multilingual awareness brochures (in Arabic, English, and Urdu) to ensure the environmental message reaches all segments of society, in addition to providing reusable bags to shop owners and consumers. He added that the campaign involves participation from members of the student environmental council from higher education institutions in the governorate, reflecting the importance of engaging youth in environmental initiatives and strengthening community partnerships. It is worth mentioning that the Environment Authority continues to implement awareness programs and initiatives in North A'Sharqiyah, with the aim of promoting positive environmental practices and achieving a clean, safe, and sustainable environment across all wilayats of the governorate.
