‘Issue Fixed…': Meta Apologises For ‘Siddaramaiah Is Dead' Kannada Translation Blunder

News183 days ago
Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah criticised Facebook for faulty Kannada translations. Meta apologised and fixed the issue after a mistranslation of a post mourning actor B Saroj Devi.
After Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah slammed social media platform Facebook for a translation blunder and raised concerns over faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on its platforms, its parent company Meta has apologised for the inaccurate translation and claimed to have fixed the issue.
'We fixed an issue that briefly caused this inaccurate Kannada translation. We apologize that this happened," a Meta spokesperson said as quoted by news agency PTI.
The apology came after a translation blunder from Meta's automatic translation entirely changed the meaning of a post from the Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO) on Facebook.
The issue came into limelight when the post written in Kannada to mourn the demise of veteran actor B Saroj Devi, was wrongly translated into English.
'Chief Minister Siddaramaiah passed away yesterday multilingual star, senior actress B. Took darshan of Sarojadevi's earthly body and paid his last respects," the mistranslation read.
Siddaramaiah took note of the faulty translation post and asked Meta to stop its Kannada auto-translation.
He said that social media platforms must act responsibly, especially when dealing with official communication, and cautioned citizens to be aware that translations displayed on these platforms are often inaccurate.
'Faulty auto-translation of Kannada content on Meta platforms is distorting facts and misleading users. This is especially dangerous when it comes to official communication. My media advisor has formally written to Meta urging immediate correction," Siddaramaiah posted on X.
In an email sent to Meta on July 16, the chief minister's media advisor, K V Prabhakar, raised serious concerns on behalf of the CM regarding the automatic translation of Kannada content on Facebook and Instagram.
The Karnataka government has asked Meta to temporarily suspend the auto-translation feature for Kannada content until translation accuracy is reliably improved.
'We have noted with concern that the auto-translation from Kannada to English is frequently inaccurate and, in some cases, grossly misleading," it said.
'This poses a significant risk, especially when public communications, official statements, or important messages from the Chief Minister are incorrectly translated… Many may not realise that what they are reading is an automated translation rather than the original message," the letter added.
In the case of Kannada auto-translation, Meta's AI machine translation model provided a machine translation error which caused inaccurate Kannada translations in Facebook– which the company claims to have been fixed now.

Parliament Monsoon Session Day 1: Lok Sabha adjourned twice amid Oppn protests

Lok Sabha witnessed noisy protests from the Opposition over various issues and a demand for discussion on Operation Sindoor, leading to at least two adjournments of the House Monday, the first day of the Monsoon Session. This came despite an appeal from Speaker Om Birla to bust the perception that disruptions happen in the House on the first day of any Parliament session, and assurances from the government that it was ready to discuss and reply to all issues. As the House met on the first day of the Monsoon session, members paid tribute to eight former MPs who passed away recently. The House also paid tributes to those who were killed in the terror attack at Pahalgam on April 22, and those killed in a plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12. Speaker Om Birla also congratulated Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) and Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla on his successful space mission, and said the House would also have a detailed discussion on the space mission during the session. When Birla called for the Question Hour, Opposition members stood up, and shouted slogans demanding discussion on various issues. 'This is Question Hour, and it's my request that we should try to maintain high parliamentary standards, and we should bust this myth that disruptions happen in the House on the first day of the House. Our efforts should be to express the hopes and expectations of the people of the country,' the Speaker said. The Speaker assured the Opposition that sufficient time would be allocated to all members for discussion. As the Opposition members continued sloganeering, the Speaker said, 'You want discussion on Operation Sindoor… Discussion will happen after Question Hour.' Birla said that the government would address every issue, and that sloganeering inside the House was inappropriate. 'Go outside the House for sloganeering,' he said. The Lok Sabha Speaker also said the government is ready to reply to all issues. But when the Opposition members continued to shout slogans despite assurances, the Speaker adjourned the House till noon. The Opposition members continued their protest when House proceedings resumed. Amidst the sloganeering, BJP leader Baijayant Panda presented the report (in both Hindi and English) of the Select Committee on the Income Tax Bill, 2025. Panda also tabled a copy of the record of evidence given before the Select Committee on the Income-Tax Bill, 2025. Amid the disruptions, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju intervened and asked if there would be a ruckus in the House, then how the discussion would happen. Rijiju said the ruckus, and sloganeering were not appropriate. 'The government is ready for discussion,' Rijiju said. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, too, assured members that the government was ready for discussion on every matter. While addressing the Lok Sabha as the Chair, Jagdambika Pal adjourned the House till 2 pm. Lalmani is an Assistant Editor with The Indian Express, and is based in New Delhi. BJP demands CBI probe in stampede case

Bengaluru: The Karnataka BJP has demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the June 4 stampede tragedy that claimed 11 lives during the celebrations following the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) IPL championship victory. Karnataka Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka wrote a letter to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday, urging that the case be handed over to the CBI. Ashoka stated, 'Our fight will not stop until justice is delivered to the families of the 11 innocent youths who lost their lives in the tragedy caused by the negligence of the Congress government during the IPL victory celebrations. By projecting the police department as solely responsible for the tragedy, the government is attempting to evade its own accountability. I have written to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, demanding that the case be handed over to the CBI to ensure justice for the victims' families.' In his letter, Ashoka noted, 'Eleven people were killed and more than 56 injured during the RCB victory celebrations on June 4. The incident sparked nationwide discussion and has become a black mark in the sporting history of the state. There have been allegations and counter-allegations between the police and the state government regarding the incident.' 'The media has reported that the stampede occurred due to the failure of the police department. However, the government has simply suspended a few police officers and remained silent. The Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), while reviewing a petition by one of the suspended officers, opined that it was not appropriate to hold only the police responsible,' he stated. 'It still remains unclear who is truly responsible for the tragedy, and the public also has the same question. Therefore, I urge you not to politicise this matter and to hand over the case to the CBI to ensure justice for the innocent lives lost,' Ashoka demanded.
