The collaboration aims to promote financial inclusion and stimulate economic development by leveraging the UN agency's international postal network and Visa's payments network.
As part of the collaboration, Visa and UPU announced three programs:
• Global Postal Digital Inclusive Finance Program: This program aims to help advance financial inclusion and economic resilience by providing tailored support for post offices that are digitalizing postal financial services. It will cover regions including Africa, Latin America & the Caribbean, Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the Arab world.
• Improving Postal Payment Interconnectivity: Enhance the UPU network's cross-border payment capabilities by integrating with Visa's global network.
• Cybersecurity & Risk Advisory Program: This initiative will leverage Visa's cybersecurity and risk credentials to assess and help enhance cybersecurity strategies, the safety and reliability of financial services within the UPU's postal payment system.
Key Areas of Collaboration:
• Digitalizing Postal Financial Services: Enhancing digital services such as international remittances, bill payments, and inbound payments to help meet postal operators' needs at their current stage of digitalization.
• Provision of Government Services through Postal Networks: Facilitating more inclusive access to government services and payments, including disbursements and tax collection, to support national financial inclusion strategies.
• Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Digitalization and Financing: Supporting the economic inclusion of MSMEs, particularly women-owned businesses, through digital solutions like e-marketplaces and mobile-based loan disbursements.
• Cybersecurity and Risk Management: Strengthening cybersecurity measures and risk mitigation tools to help protect the international postal network from potential cyber threats.
The new collaboration builds on the success of the UPU Financial Inclusion Technical Assistance Facility (FITAF), an initiative supported by Visa and the Gates Foundation that helps postal operators in developing countries provide financial services to local communities.
Rajiv Garodia, Head of Visa Government Solutions, said: "Visa is committed to using our global network and innovative technology to help empower governments and drive financial inclusion globally. The UPU is a perfect collaborator for us in this respect as it plays a significant role in providing financial services to 1.5 billion people worldwide'.
Siva Somasundram, Director of Policy, Regulation, and Markets at the UPU, said: At the UPU, we strive to foster international collaborations to drive the improvement of financial services, digital transformation, financial inclusion, innovation, and knowledge sharing within our postal network. Our goal is to diversify digital postal financial products and solutions to ensure that every community – no matter how remote – has access to relevant, reliable, and efficient services.
Promoting public-private partnerships, like the one with Visa, is a priority for the UPU in delivering sustainable and scalable digital solutions that meet the needs of underserved postal customers – helping them access digital payments, digital savings, credit, and inclusive insurance, while supporting national financial inclusion goals.'

Poland's Orlen Q2 profit jumps as upstream gains offset write-downs

GDANSK, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Polish energy group Orlen ( opens new tab on Thursday reported a near 74% rise in its second-quarter profit, with a strong upstream performance helping to offset the impact of lower refining margins and asset write-downs. The company's core profit adjusted for changes in value of its oil inventories, or EBITDA LIFO, reached 7.72 billion zlotys ($2.12 billion), a result achieved despite booking 1.49 billion zlotys in write-downs, mainly in the upstream and downstream segments. The oil refiner's upstream business reversed a massive loss from the previous year, as its results were no longer weighed down by a one-off 7.7 billion zloty write-down following a government windfall tax levied to fund energy price freezes. Orlen's energy business saw its core profit rise by 368 million zlotys year-on-year, which the company attributed to increased gas and electricity distribution. Its consumers & products division reported a 363 million zloty year-on-year increase, driven by higher sales of gas and electricity. However, profits at its downstream business fell by 561 million zlotys year-on-year, hit by a less favourable macro environment. The group's second quarter refining margin declined around 10% from the year before to $11.3 per barrel. The results were also impacted by a 217 million zloty provision the company booked in relation to an arbitration ruling that allows Russia's Gazprom ( opens new tab to retroactively raise gas prices. The company said in a presentation it expected its full-year LIFO-based EBITDA to be higher in 2025 than in 2024. ($1 = 3.6483 zlotys)

M&S food bounces back with strong sales following cyber attack

This was a higher rate of growth than the 4.3 per cent it recorded in last month's report. After it was targeted by cyber criminals over Easter, M&S halted website and app orders while its food stocking systems were thrown into chaos, leaving shelves empty. It did not sell clothes and homeware online for almost two months and did not offer a click-and-collect service for nearly four months. This sent shoppers in the direction of competitors, including Next, which sells many of the same third-party brands online. M&S expects a £300million dent to profits this year. This has brought it neck and neck with rival grocer Waitrose, which increased its share from 3.7 per cent to 3.8 per cent. When the attack hit, M&S had been enjoying the fruits of a long-sought turnaround after its clothes had been deemed 'frumpy' for years. It has enticed younger shoppers by offering stylish clothing ranges, advertised by stars including Sienna Miller. And it has boosted its food ranges, with new offerings such as pistachio creme and lemon hot cross buns going 'viral' on social media. Four individuals, including three teenagers, have been bailed pending further enquiries after the cyber attack over the Easter bank holiday. The personal data of millions of customers, which could have included names, email addresses, postal addresses and dates of birth, was stolen.
