Bodies of missing paddleboarder and dog recovered from Colorado's Eleven Mile Reservoir

CBS News2 days ago
The bodies of a missing paddleboarder and a dog were recovered from Eleven Mile Reservoir in the southern portion of Colorado's Park County overnight after wildlife officials say a strong wind blew a group of paddleboarders into the water.
The group was out paddleboarding on the reservoir around 1 p.m. when they were knocked into the water, according to Colorado Parks and Recreation.
One person who was wearing a life jacket swam to shore, while another who was wearing a life jacket and tethered to their board was rescued by CPW rangers soon after. But the third paddleboarder wasn't wearing a life jacket or secured to their paddleboard, and an 11-hour search ensued.
Around midnight, officials from CPW, Harstel Fire, and the Park County Sheriff's Office found the paddleboarder's body and that of a dog that was with the group. The Park County Coroner will identify the victim, CPW said.
"CPW strongly encourages recreationists to wear a life jacket while boating, kayaking, paddleboarding and swimming in Colorado," the agency said in a statement Saturday morning. "Weather conditions can change quickly at the park with sudden, strong wind gusts, and visitors are encouraged to check weather forecasts before heading outdoors."
Eleven Mile Reservoir is the second largest reservoir in Denver Water's system and one of the largest bodies of water east of the Continental Divide.

Three local parks to close due to heat this month Just this past week, the County of San Diego closed three parks for the month of August as the summer temperatures rise — El Capitan Preserve near Lakeside, Hellhole Canyon Preserve in Valley Center and Mt. Gower Preserve in Ramona. In May, the county also closed two other parks located in or near Anza Borrego desert, Agua Caliente Regional Park and Vallecito County Park. The parks will reopen Labor Day weekend. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed. Solve the daily Crossword

Gov. Polis declares disaster emergency for wildfire burning in northwest Colorado

Gov. Jared Polis verbally declared a disaster emergency Sunday for a wildfire burning in northwest Colorado. The Elk Fire began around 12:30 p.m. yesterday in Rio Blanco County and has burned around 600 acres to the southeast of Meeker. The Rio Blanco County Sheriff's Office said the wildfire is actively burning across land belonging to the Colorado Division of Wildland, the Bureau of Land Management and private owners, fueled by pinyon, juniper and oak brush in the area. They added that no structures are currently at risk. Authorities said the smoke from the wildfire can be seen from Meeker, and the hot and dry conditions are contributing to active fire behavior. The sheriff's office requested that residents and travelers avoid the area while emergency personnel are working to contain the fire. Due to the rugged terrain in the area, Hotshot crews are being dropped into the fire zone to assist ground crews with suppression efforts. Today's declaration provides additional resources and state support to help in fire suppression efforts. A statement from the governor's office said: "Fire conditions in northwest Colorado are at near record levels, and elevated fire weather and fire risk is forecast for the coming week. With the disaster declaration, the State Emergency Operations and Resource Mobilization Plans are activated and the Colorado Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (DHSEM) coordinates the state response through management of the State Emergency Operations Center and deployment of field operations staff to directly support county emergency managers with consequence management. The Division of Fire Prevention and Control (DFPC) is leading the incident management and suppression efforts in conjunction with the other CDPS Divisions."

Hikers rescued from Point Reyes National Seashore after rising tide blocks exit

A pair of stranded hikers in the Point Reyes National Seashore were rescued Saturday with help from the Marin County Fire Department and the Sonoma County Sheriff's Office. The Sheriff's Office's helicopter was requested by fire crews to help the stranded hikers near Elephant Rock. They became stranded when rising tides made their exit route inaccessible, according to the Sheriff's Office. Henry-1, their helicopter, then completed a long-line rescue operation. Both hikers were rescued safely, and no injuries were reported.
