LKM and ex-BJP leader Surya Hansda shot dead by Jharkhand Police in encounter while ‘trying to escape custody'

Indian Express4 days ago
Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) leader Surya Hansda was shot dead by police in what they said was an encounter that broke out when he tried to escape while being taken from Deoghar to Godda following his arrest in connection with a firing incident.
Hansda's wife and mother have accused the police of carrying out a 'planned encounter' and have refused to accept his body.
The Godda police said Hansda was wanted in connection with a case filed last month under Lalmatia police station limits regarding a firing incident at the Paharpur area of ECL's Rajmahal Project. Police also alleged that he was involved in cases of setting trucks on fire at a crusher mill in Sahibganj.
Godda SP Mukesh Kumar said that after Hansda's arrest from Nawadih in Deoghar, he allegedly disclosed during interrogation that weapons had been hidden in the Jirli–Dhamni hills of Godda. 'While being taken there, his associates, who were lying in ambush, opened fire on the police. In the chaos, Hansda allegedly snatched a weapon from the police and tried to escape. Crossfire between the two sides lasted for around half an hour. In response, we shot him dead while he was attempting to flee. His body was taken into custody and sent to Godda Sadar Hospital for post-mortem,' Kumar said.
The SP said that Hansda had been involved in several other crimes, including an incident in which he allegedly broke the hand of a DSP who had gone to arrest him. 'We have followed the procedure mentioned in the NHRC guidelines. Only the report is awaited,' he said.
Hansda's mother, however, said he had been unwell and had undergone treatment in Vellore, after which he returned and was staying at a relative's house at Nawaadih in Mohanpur. 'From there, policemen in plain clothes came on a motorcycle and took him away. After that, he went missing, and we suspected something was wrong,' she said.
His wife, Sushila Murmu, said he had been bedridden. 'Earlier, during his arrest in a false case, we told the media that the police had already planned to kill him, but no one took it seriously. Police did not inform us about anything that was happening and did not allow us to see the body,' she said.
A resident of Dakaitha village in Godda, Hansda belonged to the Santhal Adivasi community and was earlier associated with the BJP. In the last Assembly elections, when the BJP fielded Lobin Hembrom from Borio, Hansda contested on a JLKM ticket but suffered a heavy defeat.

VHP leader's death anniversary passes off peacefully in Odisha's Kandhamal district

Saraswati's death anniversary is observed according to the Hindu calendar, Jalespeta ashram head Swami Jeevan Muktananda Puri said. While security was especially tightened around Saraswati's ashrams at Chakapada and Jalespeta, the entire district was placed under a security blanket as the VHP leader's assassination on August 23, 2008 led to large-scale violence that claimed 38 lives. Phulbani (Odisha), Aug 15 (PTI) The 17th death anniversary of VHP leader Swami Laxmanananda Saraswati passed off peacefully in Odisha's Kandhamal district amidst tightened security arrangements on Friday, official said. The monk and four of his associates were gunned downed while they were celebrating Janmashtami at Jalespeta ashram under Tumudibandh police station in the district. Kandhamal SP Harish BC said security was tightened up across the district in view of Saraswati's death anniversary, which in previous years had sparked violence in the region. Apart from two ashrams, armed police were also deployed at vulnerable points, the SP said, adding that no report of any untoward incident was received from any place so far. Though it was claimed that Maoists were involved in the killing of Saraswati and his associates, the VHP continued to demand the arrest of the mastermind of the mass murder. 'The state government is committed to arresting all culprits responsible for the killings,' Kandhamal MP Sukant Panigrahi said. Meanwhile, opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress criticised the BJP government in the state for not making public the report of the commission that probed the killing of the VHP leader. Soon after the BJP came to power in the state last year, Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan assured that the inquiry commission report on the killing of Saraswati would be made public. Justice Sarat Chandra Mohapatra was appointed as the one-man commission to probe Saraswati's killing and the subsequent riots in 2008. However, he passed away in 2012 before completing the inquiry. Then, Justice A S Naidu was appointed to head the panel, which submitted its report in two volumes to the home secretary in December 2015. However, the findings of the commission have not been made public either by the previous BJD government or the present BJP regime. Two arrested for murder of local BJP functionary, cousin near Mumbai

Bhiwandi: Four days after BJP leader Praful Tangadi (45) and his cousin Tejas Tangadi (22) were brutally murdered in Bhiwandi, Bhiwandi Taluka police arrested two accused — Vicky Mhatre and Kalpesh Vaiti — on Friday. They were produced before court and remanded to police custody till Aug 22. The incident occurred on August 11 when the victims, engaged in the construction business, were returning home after closing their office. Outside the premises, four to five masked men attacked them with swords and sharp weapons, leaving both critically injured. A relative rushed them to hospital, but doctors declared them dead on arrival. Praful, Thane Rural vice president of BJP Yuva Morcha and head of JDT Enterprises, was a prominent local figure. Police suspect a long-standing dispute between him and Mhatre, who was also accused of assaulting him two years ago. The victims' family alleged police negligence in that earlier case emboldened the attackers. Rahul Gandhi's Viral Photo With Jagdish Tytler Triggers Backlash By BJPs Sirsa, Malviya

On the occasion of India's 79th Independence Day, Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa launched a scathing attack on the Congress party and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, drawing a fiery comparison between the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and 'the Holocaust'. Taking to social media platform 'X', Sirsa reacted sharply to a viral image showing Rahul Gandhi standing in the rain while Jagdish Tytler, accused in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, stood nearby holding an umbrella. The photograph sparked widespread outrage among Sikh groups and political critics, with Sirsa using it as a powerful symbol of Congress's unresolved past. 'For Congress, the killing of thousands of Sikhs in 1984 is not a blot it's a badge they wear with pride. Rahul Gandhi standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Jagdish Tytler is like Hitler posing with Heinrich Himmler the mastermind of the Holocaust. Just as Hitler stood by his mass murderers to send a message that they were his own, Rahul Gandhi standing alongside Jagdish Tytler sends the same message: no matter the past, they remain his own,' Sirsa wrote on X. BJP leader Amit Malviya, in a post on X, said: "Jagdish Tytler, the man who unleashed genocide on Sikhs at Rajiv Gandhi's behest, is once again seen alongside Rahul Gandhi at the Congress HQ. Some stains don't wash away, no matter how much time passes. The Gandhis are unapologetic too." Sirsa's statement comes amid ongoing legal proceedings against Jagdish Tytler, who is accused of leading a mob during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots that resulted in the brutal killing and burning of three Sikh men. The case is currently being heard in a Delhi court, where a crucial piece of evidence — a sting operation video — was recently submitted. Senior Advocate H.S. Phoolka, representing the victims, stated in a previous hearing that the video, recorded in 2012, allegedly features Tytler boasting about having killed 100 Sikhs. The CD was reportedly handed over to the CBI by former Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) President Manjit Singh GK. The 1984 anti-Sikh riots, which happened after the assassination of Indira Gandhi, then prime minister, led to the deaths of over 3,000 Sikhs across the country. The worst violence had been reported in Delhi at that time. Tytler has long been in the eye of storm due to the case. Demands had been raised for accountability and justice from the Sikh community. Sirsa's strong reaction has underlined the emotional and political weight the 1984 riots continue to carry, especially for the Sikh community.
