Empowering India's Credit Evolution: TransUnion CIBIL Credit Conference 2025 Explores Inclusive Finance and Economic Empowerment
From veteran bankers and fintech pioneers to policy architects and development finance experts, the event spotlighted voices shaping the future of India's credit lending ecosystem. Underpinning the conference was a celebration of the growth of India's credit landscape over the last 25 years, during which TransUnion CIBIL has played a pivotal role in this evolution through data, scale, and reach.
Some of the most impactful outcomes of India's evolving credit landscape include: • Over 714 million individuals have gained access to formal credit, positively impacting households across the country, over the past two decades • 1,036 million consumer loans have been facilitated, including 52 million housing loans and six million education loans, in the last 25 years • 118 million women consumers in the last 10 years have entered the credit mainstream for the first time, unlocking opportunities that were previously unavailable to them • 34 million MSME loans have been disbursed in the past 25 years, powering the growth of India's future • Since 2004, more than 3,172 million credit reports issued by TransUnion CIBIL have helped more than 4,000 financial institutions make better-informed lending decisions • Retail delinquencies (balance-level, at 90 days or more past due) have improved by 130 bps in the last 10 years Speaking at the conference, Mr. M. Rajeshwar Rao, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India, said, 'Credit reporting and TransUnion CIBIL have grown together in India and the company has made a significant contribution in expanding the footprint of credit reporting in the country. Credit reporting systems today operate as a key element in the national financial architecture, encouraging greater credit access, supporting financial inclusion, enabling effective supervision, and enhancing financial stability. This silver jubilee therefore, also represents a significant milestone in TransUnion CIBIL's ongoing contribution to strengthening this framework. This also gives us an occasion to reflect on how the information gap between the credit institutions and the borrowers has been addressed over time and the possible way ahead.' Additionally, the Deputy Governor, said, 'At the heart of a sustainable credit landscape lies an empowered consumer which is enabled when we have a financially aware and literate customer. While regulations mandate transparency and awareness, the responsibility needs to be fulfilled by all of us. Financial literacy cannot be achieved through a one-time campaign; it has to be a sustained commitment for all the institutions and entities involved. The setting up of Credit Information Companies was in one sense the starting point of this journey of financial inclusion and democratisation of credit. Even as the journey continues, the role of the CICs remains integral and important in realizing the vision of total financial Inclusion.' Mr. Bhavesh Jain, MD & CEO, TransUnion CIBIL, said, 'India's credit ecosystem is becoming more inclusive, transparent, and future-ready. Reliable data empowers lenders to take strategically informed decisions which in turn support borrowers in building and strengthening their financial profiles. Our focus remains to enable all stakeholders to navigate this transformation responsibly and sustainably.' Mr. Deepak Parekh, Former Chairman, HDFC Limited, said, 'One needs to position the role of a credit bureau as one that protects the customer, works for the customer, and helps prevent the customer from getting into financial difficulties. The credit score is like a medical report—and based on the report, one is diagnosed, if required. It is true when experts say that the credit score is the mirror of one's credit behaviour. Checking it regularly is like monitoring blood pressure or cholesterol levels—a preventive financial health measure we must all adopt. Trust, and only trust, remains the most critical aspect of financial services. Customer centricity is the only differentiator among credit bureaus.' Mr. Amitabh Chaudhry, MD & CEO, Axis Bank, said, "We must invest in financial literacy, helping borrowers understand credit health and long-term financial planning. This is not just a regulatory obligation, it is a moral imperative if we want to build a Viksit Bharat. Banks, bureaus, fintechs, and regulators must work together to harvest alternate data, build smarter risk tools, and create credit systems that say 'yes' more often, responsibly, creatively, and at the speed of India's aspirations." Mr. K V Kamath, Chairman, Jio Financial Services Limited, said, "As India moves from a $4 trillion to an $8 trillion economy, the task ahead won't just double, it will expand exponentially. With a rapidly growing aspirational class and the rise of new technologies like AI, the demand for trusted, curated data will become even more critical. This marks the beginning of a new chapter for TransUnion CIBIL, one that's closely tied to India's next wave of growth,' The CIBIL Score continues to play a key role in how creditworthiness is evaluated by banks, NBFCs, and FinTechs. To enhance market transparency, at the conference TransUnion CIBIL shared deeper insights from the latest Credit Market Indicator (CMI) Report, an essential resource for lenders, economists, and policymakers to monitor credit trends in retail lending.
The conference devoted special attention to one of India's key drivers for growth, the MSME sector. An MSME Day special edition of the MSME Pulse Report was shared, giving in-depth insights on credit participation and sectoral performance. The recently launched CreditVision® CIBIL Commercial Rank (CV CMR), complementary to the Company Credit Report (CCR), was also introduced. These tools help assess credit behavior across enterprises, improving underwriting accuracy and deepening access to finance for MSMEs.
The conference concluded with a shared vision for building a financially confident and credit-aware India. Speakers emphasized the need to strengthen creditworthiness across a broader borrower base through improved data access, financial literacy, and ecosystem-wide collaboration.
'As India progresses towards the goals outlined in Bharat@2047, expanding the credit-ready population, especially in semi-urban and rural regions, will be instrumental in unlocking economic growth,' said Jain. 'By enabling lenders to better assess risk and empowering individuals and small businesses to build and improve their credit profiles, TransUnion CIBIL's insights continue to play a catalytic role in putting more capital in the hands of individuals and small businesses. A more inclusive credit ecosystem is not only vital for economic progress, but also foundational to a future where opportunity reaches every corner of the country.' The conference commenced with the traditional lighting of the diya, symbolizing knowledge, progress, and a shared commitment to inclusive financial growth. The ceremony was led by Chris Cartwright, CEO, TransUnion; Venkataramanan Anantharaman, Chairman, TransUnion CIBIL; Ketaki Bhagwati, Independent Director, TransUnion CIBIL; Sanjay Prasad, Independent Director, TransUnion CIBIL; Todd Skinner, President – International, TransUnion; and N.S. Kannan, Independent Director, in the presence of industry leaders and stakeholders.

Generative AI set to improve banking operations in India by 46%: RBI Report
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) has the potential to improve banking operations in India by up to 46 per cent, according to a report by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). The central bank noted that AI can help financial institutions better understand customer behaviour, improve efficiency, and offer more personalised services at scale. The report said AI is increasingly being adopted across the financial services sector. This adoption is being driven by multiple needs, including enhancing customer experience, improving employee productivity, increasing revenue, reducing operational costs, ensuring regulatory compliance, and enabling the creation of new and innovative products. As per report, Generative AI, in particular, is playing a major role by using advanced analytics to help institutions understand customer behaviour, manage risks more effectively, and control costs. Live Events AI-powered alternative credit scoring models are also helping expand credit access to people who are underserved by the traditional banking system. RBI also stated that in India, where millions of people still do not have access to formal banking, AI can help assess the creditworthiness of potential borrowers using non-traditional data sources. These may include information such as utility bill payments, mobile usage patterns, GST filings, or e-commerce transactions. Such technology can help bring "thin-file" or "new-to-credit" customers into the formal financial system. The report also pointed out that AI chatbots are transforming customer service by handling routine queries around the clock, providing faster resolutions, and freeing up human staff for more complex tasks. Globally, the adoption of AI in financial services has been growing rapidly. The RBI report said that AI is expected to directly contribute to revenue growth for the industry in the coming years. The generative AI segment alone is projected to exceed Rs 1.02 lakh crore (about USD 12 billion) by 2033, growing at an annual rate of 28-34 per cent. The findings highlighted that with proper use, AI can make banking in India more efficient, inclusive, and customer-friendly while driving strong growth for the sector.

Rupee trades weak with US-Russia meeting in focus; opens at 87.46/$
The Indian rupee traded slightly lower on Thursday amid rising oil prices, after logging its strongest session in over a month a day earlier. The domestic currency opened 2 paise lower at 87.46 against the greenback on Thursday, according to Bloomberg. The domestic currency rose 28 paise, or 0.32 per cent, in the previous session. The rupee has depreciated by 2.25 per cent in the current financial year so far, whereas it has weakened by 2.09 per cent in the current calendar year so far. However, the local currency has witnessed 0.18 per cent appreciation in August so far. The domestic currency closed higher on constant selling by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) at 87.73 levels and had closed higher at 87.44 against the dollar, according to Anil Kumar Bhansali, head of treasury and executive director at Finrex Treasury Advisors LLP. Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) remained net sellers in the equity market but bought some debt following the recent market decline, Bhansali said. Global funds have been net sellers of ₹18,710 crore so far this month. With expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate cut pulling the dollar index lower, the rupee could gradually strengthen towards 87.00, depending on the outcome of Friday's US–Russia summit, Bhansali said. "Exporters are advised to sell near 87.75 if the level reappears, as the RBI has been protecting it, while importers should wait to hedge and buy on dips for cash and near-term payments." Trump warned Putin of "very severe consequences" if the Russian leader didn't agree to a ceasefire. Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent cautioned that the current 25 per cent secondary tariff on India could increase if the Trump-Putin meeting fails to make headway. Further, Bessent urged the Federal Reserve to cut half-point interest in the September meeting, amid reports that Trump might select a new Fed Chair sooner than expected. The dollar index, a measure of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, was down 0.09 per cent at 97.75. In commodities, crude oil rose but was near a two-month low after the International Energy Agency said the market is on track for record oversupply next year. Brent crude price was up 0.41 per cent at 65.90 per barrel, while WTI crude prices were higher by 0.41 per cent at 62.91, as of 9:17 AM IST.

Paytm shares up 17% so far in 2025. Should you ride the rally or wait for a dip?
One 97 Communications , which operates fintech platform Paytm , has surged 17% so far this year, on top of a 128% jump over the past 12 months, leaving investors wondering whether the rally still has legs or if it's time to wait for a pullback. The stock has climbed 21% in the past month alone, including a 9.5% jump this week, underscoring bullish sentiment that has pushed it above all eight of its key moving averages and kept its technical indicators in overdrive. The latest boost came Wednesday, when shares rallied nearly 5% to a new 52-week high of Rs 1,173.70 after the Reserve Bank of India granted in-principle approval to its wholly owned subsidiary, Paytm Payments Services Ltd, to operate as an online payment aggregator. The move also lifts the merchant onboarding ban imposed in November 2022, removing a major regulatory overhang. Certain transactions such as merchant 'pay-outs' must not be routed through escrow accounts meant for PA operations. Regulatory relief follows profit turnaround In July, Paytm posted a consolidated net profit of Rs 122.5 crore for the first quarter of FY26, reversing a Rs 839 crore loss a year earlier. Revenue from operations climbed 28% year-on-year to Rs 1,917 crore during the quarter, while contribution profit rose 52% to Rs 1,151 crore, lifting the margin to 60%. The company ended the quarter with Rs 12,872 crore in cash. Live Events Net payment revenue grew 38% to Rs 529 crore during June 2025 quarter, and revenue from distribution of financial services doubled to Rs 561 crore. Merchant device subscriptions stood at 1.30 crore across MSMEs and enterprise payment merchants. Analysts weigh in Laxmikant Shukla, Senior Manager, Technical Analyst at YES Securities, said the stock has 'shown impressive bullish strength, breaking past its previous monthly high of Rs 1130 levels.' 'Despite some profit booking yesterday, it remains above the breakout zone… any dips towards this support zone could be a buying opportunity. The stock is targeting new highs with a potential near term target of Rs 1235,' said Shukla. Nilesh Jain, Head of Technical and Derivatives Research at Centrum Broking, noted Paytm's 'multi-year breakout above the Rs 1,050 mark' and said the structure 'remains bullish with potential to move beyond Rs 1,250,' but cautioned that 'the recent sharp rally has made the risk–reward ratio less attractive at current levels.' Mandar Bhojane, Senior Research Analyst at Choice Broking, pointed to a breakout from a Cup and Handle pattern and said: 'A sustained move above Rs 1160 could pave the way for upside targets of Rs 1300 and Rs 1400, while immediate support at Rs 1120 and Rs 1080 offers attractive buy-on-dips opportunities.' Bhojane flagged Rs 1200 and Rs 1250 as resistance levels where profit booking could emerge. Drumil Vithlani, Technical Research Analyst at Bonanza, cited a flag and pole breakout with a near-term target of Rs 1,220–Rs 1,250 and possible extension to Rs 1,300. Vithlani said the RBI approval and Q1 profit 'remove a major overhang… improving merchant acquisition prospects and boosting payment volumes,' but warned that risks include 'profit booking due to overbought RSI levels, potential adverse regulatory developments, and execution challenges.' Technical setup Paytm's RSI stands at 68.9, just shy of overbought territory, while MACD is at 35.8, above the center line but below the signal line. The stock trades above its 5-day, 10-day, 20-day, 30-day, 50-day, 100-day, 150-day and 200-day simple moving averages, signalling bullish undertones in both the short and long term.
