Cargojet navigates tariff turbulence, maintains revenue growth
Transport revenue came in at $148.7 million, with a 14% increase in domestic revenue and 22% growth in charter revenues outpacing a 9.6% decline from aircraft-as-a-service contracts, according to results published Wednesday night. The bundled lease business was down 15% in the first quarter. Cargojet (TSX: CJT) said revenue from its domestic network, which co-loads freight from multiple customers in 16 cities, benefitted from e-commerce and B2B growth, as well as rate escalators in customer contracts.
Reflecting the economic uncertainty from trade tensions with the United States, domestic revenues were down 2.4% from the first quarter. The decline in revenue from leased aircraft with crews was largely due to lower shipment volumes from Europe amid U.S. tariff threats of up to 50%, but trans-atlantic business constitutes a small portion of overall revenue, the airline said.
Adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization was $58.3 million, up 1.4% compared to the same quarter the previous year. Management said its adjusted profit margin of 34% was the result of strong operating efficiencies and cost management as flight hours declined 10%. Cargojet posted a smaller net loss of $2.3 million as it used cash to invest in more freighter aircraft.
Analysts called the results solid considering the turbulent macroeconomic environment.
'I'm not expecting that this is going to be a huge, huge bumper season. It's a season of adjustments,' Executive Chairman Ajay Virmani told analysts.
The company separately announced a long-term extension of its flying contract with DHL Express. Virmani said it made sense to renew the strategic partnership two years early by lowering the share price DHL needs to pay to exercise a stock buy and that motivates DHL to give Cargojet more business so it can reach the revenue target for executing its warrants. The replacement warrants were on the growth side, indicating DHL intends to grow volume and put Cargojet first in line for new business, he explained.
'During tough economic times, consumers often substitute a product with a lower cost item, but we expect the volumes to remain resilient. Our Q2 results clearly demonstrate that such behavior is playing out and that e-commerce is still strong and has a long runway of growth ahead of it in Canada. That said, we did see some weakness in our European ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance, and insurance) routes after Liberation Day, but we remain optimistic that after the EU-U.S trade deal and our new DHL agreement, air cargo flows will reemerge in the coming quarters,' said co-CEO Jamie Porteous on Thursday's earnings conference call.
Cargo airlines, including Cargojet, might see a spike in parcel volumes this month as shippers rush to beat the United States' Aug. 29 date for ending the de minimis exemption for all nations, which allowed small-dollar shipments to enter the country with no need to pay duties and minimal paperwork, Virmani said.
Cargojet said it recently took advantage of market conditions to buy three converted Boeing 767-300s and one factory-built 767-300, the latter of which is scheduled to join the operational fleet this quarter.
Cargojet now operates 43 Boeing 767 and 757 freighter aircraft after adding two used 767-300 passenger aircraft this year that were modified to carry cargo containers. A third 767-300 aircraft remains under conversion and is expected to be delivered in the fourth quarter.
The company said it will sell two older 767-300 aircraft during the third quarter to improve cash flow and its debt leverage ratio. It will also return an older 767-200 to its lessor in the first quarter of 2026.
During the call, management announced that Gord Johnston, who has served as executive president, strategic partnerships, since early 2024, has been promoted to chief commercial officer. The new role will streamline sales processes and generate new revenues by improving capacity utilization in key lanes, including backhaul lanes, by leveraging spot market opportunities and interline relationships with other airlines, co-CEO Pauline Dhillon said.
In June, Cargojet hired Aaron McKay, who previously worked at Canadian passenger airline WestJet, as chief financial officer. He replaced Scott Calver, who departed in March.

Why I'd Double-Down on This 5% Yielding Stock While Others Panic

The Canadian telecom industry is highly consolidated, with primarily three companies accounting for most of the market share. Considering how important it is for people to stay connected in this day and age, the telecom sector is rightfully perceived as a highly defensive industry. However, BCE Inc. (TSX:BCE), one of the Big Three Telcos in Canada, has been one of the worst-performing telcos over the last few years. As of this writing, BCE stock trades for $32 per share, down by over 50% from its five-year highs. The question is, are things going to improve moving forward? Would it be wise to invest in the stock when so many investors are pulling out? The entire telco sector has been in a rough position in recent years. Despite no pressure from outside competitors in the domestic market, Canadian telecom providers haven't offered a lot of earnings growth. Canadians will not appreciate price hikes in a bid to increase earnings, but telcos can improve margins by making operations more efficient. BCE stock BCE owns and operates Bell Canada, an internet and cellular network provider operating throughout Canada. The company also has significant media assets and other properties. BCE is not the only underperforming telco. Its peers and media in general have not been thriving of late. The telco industry is highly consolidated, especially after Rogers Communications buying out Shaw. The move makes Rogers a stronger competitor, but it will likely reduce overall competitive pressure on BCE. BCE's recent earnings saw it report 49.5% earnings growth, over 800% free cash flow growth, and 29% operating cash flow growth. However, the company's overall revenue decreased by 1.3% in the same quarter last year. The earnings painted an overall good picture and indicate that BCE is becoming more efficient. BCE has taken steps like divesting non-core businesses, deleveraging, and laying off employees. BCE has been the farthest-reaching broadband internet connection provider. It leads the industry in fibre optics, and it has had the fastest growth among its peers. Its acquisition of Ziply Fibre also opens the door to the US telecom industry. The company might not look like it's in the best position right now. However, diversifying into another market and setting itself up for further expansion means there is plenty of growth potential that investors can leverage by investing in its shares at current levels. Foolish takeaway The question that still stands is whether it might be a good investment right now. BCE reduced its dividends to make more money available to put back into the business. While income-focused investors might see dividend cuts as a bad thing, it is a sign that the company is looking to get its balance sheet into a stronger position. I feel that the dividend stock warrants at least a small portion of the capital you might be considering investing into the market right now. Morgan Stanley resets AMD stock price target after earnings originally appeared on TheStreet. AMD's () Q2 earnings print rolled out big numbers, while keeping the AI narrative intact. However, even with all that strength on paper, not every corner of Wall Street is convinced. Morgan Stanley's latest research note on the AI giant strikes a cautious tone, and what they flagged could potentially ripple across the entire chip space. 💵💰💰💵 The reasons are much deeper than earnings and into the murkier territory of global policy and risk. U.S. policy whiplash keeps AI chip exports in flux Who could've guessed that semiconductor policy would become a geopolitical tug-of-war, with chipmakers like AMD caught in the middle? Since the first round of punitive U.S. export controls during President Donald Trump's first term, Washington's stance on AI chips has had everything to do with national security and economic self-interest. It started in 2018, when Trump's administration barred Chinese telecom giants from obtaining federal contracts, while laying the groundwork for future chip it was under President Biden in late 2022 that things truly escalated. The Commerce Department formally layered in high-end GPUs and semiconductor gear to its export blacklist, linked to China's military and AI ambitions. In mid-2025, though, the Trump administration flipped the script completely. In May 2025, during Trump's second term, the Commerce Department reopened the door for Nvidia's H20 GPUs to ship to China. However, at the same time, Washington slapped a 100% tariff on non-U.S.-made chips. The jarring U-turn has sparked a bipartisan backlash, with critics arguing that the U.S. gave up leverage without getting any real concessions from Beijing. Meanwhile, the licensing arm of the Bureau of Industry and Security remains mostly overwhelmed. With staffing troubles, outdated systems, and a flood of export requests, it's currently experiencing the worst backlog in 30 years. Billions in GPU shipments are stuck in a bureaucratic limbo, and Chinese buyers are reportedly looking at gray-market workarounds. Hence, analysts warn that the AI market will remain choppy without much clarity on the bureaucratic front. Record sales, shrinking margins as AMD's China problem bites AMD delivered its best quarterly sales performance in Q2, but its bottom line told a different story. For Q2, the chipmaker reported a whopping $7.70 billion in sales, up 32% year-over-year, and comfortably ahead of Wall Street's $7.41 billion forecast. CEO Lisa Su credited robust demand for Zen 5 Ryzen processors and accelerating MI350 deployments across data from a profitability standpoint, AMD ran into turbulence. Non-GAAP earnings per share landed at $0.48, down roughly 30% from a year earlier. GAAP EPS came in at $0.54, which ignores a painful $800 million inventory and related charge linked to the stalled MI308 GPU shipments to China under U.S. export rules. Additionally, gross margin on a non-GAAP basis dropped 10 points to 43%, and operating income tanked 29% to $897 million. On a GAAP basis, AMD swung to a $134 million operating loss. CFO Jean Hu stressed that gross margins would have been close to 54% without the export-related drag, underscoring the strength in AMD's earnings power. Still, not everything is bleeding red. Data-center sales surged 14% to $3.2 billion, PC chip sales jumped 67% to $2.5 billion, and gaming soared 73% to $1.1 billion. Perhaps the only soft spot was embedded chips, which dropped 4%. Nonetheless, all roads lead back to China. AMD hasn't dished out a clear timeline for resuming shipments of MI308 GPUs, shedding light on how 'vague' the current U.S. export review process has become. AMD gets a downgrade despite strong Q2 earnings Morgan Stanley isn't buying the hype. On Aug. 6, analyst Joseph Moore cut his price target for AMD stock to $168 from $185, maintaining an 'equal weight' rating. That may surprise some, as the chipmaker just posted its best quarterly sales performance in Q2. AMD also showed strength across all its major segments: Client, Data Center, Gaming, and Embedded. Moore even praised AMD's next-gen MI400 GPU lineup, calling it a core driver for future expansion. Nevertheless, despite the strong print, Moore highlighted near-term headwinds, particularly in China. As discussed earlier, the U.S. export restrictions continue to cloud AMD's ability to ship to the region. However, the concern is that Moore feels the expected recovery looks 'more vague than expected.' Moore argues that the AI boom hasn't boosted AMD enough to justify a higher stock price. He warns that AMD's near-term outlook is limited until clearer shipment ramps or margin inflection points emerge. This downgrade, though, is in contrast to other recent analyst notes. AI Stock Descartes Systems Just Dropped 13%: Time to Buy the Dip?

Its stock is up 92% in the past five years, 618% in the past 10 years, and 2,480% in the past 15 years. Descartes: A great business and a great long-term stock Descartes is leading global provider of transportation and logistics software solutions. It operates a logistics network that connects thousands of businesses across the global supply chain. This network is a fundamental asset that accommodates global trade. Descartes has intelligently complemented this asset by acquiring a wide mix of complementary SaaS (software-as-a-service) solutions. These help make trade more compliant, efficient, and profitable for all providers. In many of its services, Descartes uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to help customers keep track of shipments, route couriers, maintain compliance documents, and manage inventory. Often, its solutions are replacing cumbersome paper processes. Once its solutions are adopted, there is no going back to the old processes. A high-quality business Descartes is to the global supply chain like Visa is to global commerce. It provides the integral network that accommodates trade around the world. As a result, it has a high customer retention rate and high (93%) recurring service revenue. Descartes has grown revenues by a 14% compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past decade. Its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) have grown by an even faster 17.5% CAGR in that time. Descartes is a very pricey stock given near-term challenges Such strong performance has come with a downside for Descartes. Its valuation has risen considerably over the past decade. It trades with an enterprise value (EV)-to-EBITDA ratio of 32 times and a price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio of 62 times. This is part of the reason for Descartes' uncharacteristic stumble. Its stock is down 13% for the year and 15% in the past six months. So, what's going on? Descartes is caught in the crossfire of Trump's global trade war. Companies have slowed decision-making around trade, cross-border shipments, and supply chains. They are waiting for stability in the market. That impacts demand for Descartes services. It could impact its growth outlook for 2025. The company proactively reduced its workforce by 7% given the environment. This concerned the market to an extent and the stock took a hit after it released first quarter earnings. Buy today or wait for another opportunity? So the question is whether Descartes Systems looks attractive today? Certainly, its valuation has come down. It was trading with an EV/EBITDA ratio of 40 at the start of the year. Today, it is down 8 to 32. Yet, it is still an extremely pricey stock. It trades just over its long-term valuation mean of 31. To justify its current valuation, Descartes needs to maintain its 12–15% annual growth rate for many years to come. There isn't a huge margin for safety in the stock price. If you believe this company can continue to hit its growth targets, it is probably not a terrible time to add to the stock. However, I would look for a greater pullback to make a significant addition. It's a great company, just not a great price to pay for it right now.
