Pupil dies, several injured after 'drunk' KZN scholar transport driver crashes
Duma said he was alerted to the crash via WhatsApp messages from community members in Ndwedwe about an alleged drunk driver of a scholar transport vehicle.

'I also received a disturbing video of the [allegedly] drunk driver and other photos. I immediately assigned a team to urgently visit the scene of a crash caused by the same driver. The team also proceeded to Montobella District Hospital to monitor the condition of 10 learners who were injured,' he said.
Duma said he received news in the early hours of Thursday of the death of one of the pupils.
Six other pupils were treated and discharged, while four were admitted with severe head and body injuries.
'The extent of the injuries suggests extensive medical treatment and rehabilitation. I have mandated the team to launch an investigation and assess the management of this scholar transport service and many others.
'Drastic action will be taken not only against the driver but also against the owner of this service provider. In addition, I have mandated the Road Traffic Inspectorate and other law enforcement agencies in the province to be on full alert and do spot checks of scholar transport.'
On Tuesday Duma presented a report on scholar transport to the KwaZulu-Natal legislature transport portfolio committee.
'We reported over the past 400 days we have ensured scholar transport for more than 77,369 learners in 434 schools in all parts of the province. The department is administering the learner transport services programme on behalf of the education department with a budget of R341.154m this financial year,' he said.
There are 85 contracts spread across 12 districts, he added.
'Despite the coverage outlined above, the programme still has a backlog of 1,571 schools on the waiting list, as well as 234,907 learners requiring the service. We need more than R2bn for this purpose.'

Newcastle police warn residents against online scam traps
Local police are warning residents to 'take extra precautions' and be cautious with their money. According to Lizzy Arumugam of the Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications office, many people are still falling into traps set by scammers. 'These unsuspecting victims are defrauded of their hard-earned money,' explained Arumugam. She added that members of the public were duped into depositing large sums of money into deals that were later discovered to be fraudulent. 'These deals never materialized, and victims end up losing a significant amount of money,' she said. She continued: 'On social media platforms such as Facebook and the Internet, perpetrators frequently post enticing advertisements for the sale of cars, household appliances, cell phones, pets, generators, and other valuable items.' These suspects would then persuade their targets, who are in desperate need of the aforementioned items, that they can be obtained for a ridiculously low price. 'Vulnerable victims then engage in some form of communication with these faceless sellers, who persuade them to make an urgent cash deposit. This is done either via EFT or deposit at the bank, before the required items were delivered,' she confirmed. Following the fraudulent transaction, the suspect would confirm receiving the money and, at times, demand more cash before disappearing into thin air without fulfilling the promise. Despite numerous warnings, these types of trends continue to occur. 'When making purchases, the public is once again urged to go to reputable businesses, shops, or car dealerships that operate within the bounds of the law.' Members of the community are also advised to conduct proper research, rather than relying on advertisements displayed on social media, as most of the information is misleading. 'The general public should also be wary of quickly depositing or transferring cash to unknown people without proper verification,' Arumugam concluded. Watch: 3 arrested for urging toddler to smoke, child rescued in Johannesburg
A video showing a three-year-old boy being encouraged by adults to smoke from a makeshift pipe has sparked national outrage and led to the arrest of the child's mother and two men. The Witness reports that the harrowing footage, which shows the child being coached to inhale what appeared to be drugs, triggered a night-long rescue mission by community activists and police last night. By this morning, police confirmed that the boy's mother and two men, aged between 28 and 36, had been arrested and would be charged with child abuse under domestic violence laws. They are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Regional Court tomorrow. Anti-drug activist Curt van Heerden, founder of the Institution of Grace, led the urgent response after receiving the video clip. 'What makes it worse and even more heartbreaking is that they actually coach him how to smoke,' says Van Heerden. He and fellow activists tracked down the child's location to a block of flats in Johannesburg, where they questioned residents to identify the adults seen in the footage. With help from the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), the child's mother was located and taken to Sophiatown Police Station. By midnight, the child's father had also joined Van Heerden at the police station, but no medical assistance had yet been provided. 'At 02:15, I drove the child and his grandmother to a hospital in the Johannesburg CBD. By 03:00, he was finally receiving medical care,' says Van Heerden. The boy is now in the custody of social services. 'It rips my heart. He didn't want to let go.
