Who was the biggest surprise omission for each PWHL team from their expansion protection list?
The PWHL unveiled the three players protected from each of the league's six inaugural teams. Three was a small number resulting in top players from every roster being exposed, and signalling that PWHL Seattle and PWHL Vancouver will almost certainly enter the 2025-26 PWHL season as the teams to beat.
While the PWHL has yet to unveil if there will be changes to their playoff format with eight teams now in the league, it's highly likely Seattle and Vancouver will be playing playoff hockey next season, while the existing rosters will take a season or two to recover from the deep cuts the league decided to make to their cores. PWHL fans across the league reacted negatively to the lack of protection for the players they've grown to love, including the exposure of 40 of the 42 players selected in the 2024 PWHL Draft.

As baffling as the PWHL's plan for expansion was, seeing the exposed players which includes finalists for league MVP, Defender of the Year, Forward of the Year, and Rookie of the Year, including the 2024 PWHL Rookie of the Year, Defender of the Year, Goaltender of the Year, three First Team All-Stars, three Second Team All-Stars, and four of five members of the All-Rookie team. In essence, Seattle and Vancouver are picking all-star rosters without reservation.
There were some exposures that surprised more than others. Here's a look at the most shocking omissions from each PWHL team's protected list.
Boston Fleet - Hilary Knight
Knight is a finalist for the PWHL's MVP award this season and top forward. She tied for the league lead in scoring and was the captain of the Boston Fleet, and remains the captain of Team USA. She's a first ballot Hall of Famer who holds every scoring record at the World Championships. Hilary Knight however, is nearing the end of her storied career, although no one is questioning if she can remain a star in the PWHL for a few more seasons. She would be the ultimate face for the game in Seattle to help the league hit the ground running on the west coast, but it doesn't soften the shock and dismay Boston fans feel having one of the legends of the game potentially stolen from their roster.
Minnesota Frost - Sophie Jaques
Minnesota made a trade for Sophie Jaques during season one and it paid dividends. She tied for the PWHL lead in scoring by a defender, helped the Frost win back-to-back Walter Cup titles, and has seen her role grow. She's only getting better and is a finalist for the PWHL's Defender of the Year. Few are as dangerous off the rush and jumping into the play as Jaques, and she'll bring her ever improving game to the west coach and make a significant impact there as well. She flourish in Minnesota, and alongside Claire Thompson, the loss of two elite defenders is going to sting. Minnesota will pray that Nicole Gosling or Rory Guilday can be had in the PWHL Draft.
Montreal Victoire - Erin Ambrose
Montreal loves Erin Ambrose, and Erin Ambrose loves Montreal. She was the 2024 PWHL Defender of the Year, and remains one of the best in the league on and off the ice. Montreal rolled the dice exposing both Ambrose and rookie standout Cayla Barnes on their blueline. Their only hope is that Vancouver picks up Jennifer Gardiner. If the expansion teams pick Ambrose and Barnes, Montreal is going to significantly struggle, and the defensive depth available in free agency and the draft won't be able to recoup what they've lost if the worst case scenario happens.
New York Sirens - Alex Carpenter
A 2024 First Team All-Star and widely acknowledged as a top 10 forward in the world, Alex Carpenter is a game changer on the ice and was half of the PWHL's most dangerous duo alongside rookie sensation Sarah Fillier. Many New York fans couldn't wrap their head around this one, and in terms of on-ice performance, it's a hard pill to swallow. What this omission shows however, is that teams were looking far beyond the scoresheet when considering their options. New York needs a culture change, they need to shake up their roster to get more out of their depth, and this move plays into that decision. Carpenter's skill will be missed if she's selected.
Ottawa Charge - Ashton Bell
Without Ashton Bell, it's hard to imagine the Ottawa Charge get to the Walter Cup finals this year. Bell was part of Ottawa's top pairing that played heavy minutes. She blocked shots, transitioned pucks up ice, and was key to their attack. But Ottawa went with the unique toolkit possessed by Ronja Savolainen. Savolainen has a more club friendly contract with two years remaining, and there's belief she's just scratching the surface of her potential in North America. She got better as the season went on.
Toronto Sceptres - Sarah Nurse
A 2024 PWHL Second Team All-Star, Sarah Nurse was one of the top scoring threats in the league in year one, and if not for an injury in year two, the same could be said. Toronto is lucky to have the depth they do up front, but depending how this process plays out, the Sceptres are likely to lose not only Nurse, but three of Savannah Harmon, Julia Gosling, Emma Maltais, Allie Munroe, or Izzy Daniel as well. It's not a pleasant prospect for the team, but there's perhaps no loss that would hurt more than that of Nurse.

Cara Gardner Morey is leaving Princeton following seven seasons as women's hockey coach after being hired as general manager and the first employee of PWHL Vancouver's expansion franchise, the league announced Friday. Aside from spending 14 seasons at Princeton, Gardner Morey has held various coaching roles with Hockey Canada at the senior women and under-18 levels, while also serving as a developmental camp coach with the Philadelphia Flyers the past four years. She coached the Tigers to their first ECAC conference tournament title in 2020 as part of a school-record 26-win season. In 2024, the 5-12 New York Jets send just one player to the Pro Bowl: defensive tackle Quinnen Williams, who was selected as a replacement player. It wasn't for a lack of talent, but due to the turmoil caused by the coaching situation, many talented youngsters on the Jets underperformed. Advertisement 2025 hopes to have a different outlook for a Jets team with new faces at quarterback, head coach and general manager. Predictions for the upcoming season seem to be all over the place for the Jets, with some analysts suggesting a potential playoff run, while other suggest the Jets are headed for another top selection in the NFL Draft. Sporting News' Peter Martuneac predicts four Jets will make their first Pro Bowls in 2025. Martuneac's first selection is the new quarterback in town, Justin Fields. "For the Jets, it begins and ends with their likely QB1, Justin Fields." Noted Martuneac. "Despite streaky play thus far in his four NFL seasons, Fields has flashed plenty of glimpses of an elite quarterback. And, to be fair to Fields, he was never surrounded by the type of talent this Jets team currently has, nor did he receive much competent coaching while in Chicago. If the Jets can finally unlock Fields and get him to his full potential, the sky's the limit, and the early returns in OTA's are promising. Not only would he be a Pro Bowler, but an All-Pro award would likely be in play, as well." Advertisement Fields' No. 1 target for the upcoming season and former college teammate is also primed for his first Pro Bowl appearance, despite being potentially snubbed in previous years, according to Martuneac. "He may have been Rookie of the Year in 2022, but Wilson has somehow failed to win a Pro Bowl award despite starting his career off with three straight 1,000 yard seasons. And he did all that with mostly questionable quarterback play." Wrote Martuneac. "Now he has his old Ohio State teammate Justin Fields throwing him the ball, and they already appear to be recapturing that old chemistry that made Ohio State's offense so electric in 2020. If Fields lives up to his potential, expect Wilson to be the main beneficiary of that which should be more than enough for his first Pro Bowl nod." Completing a trifecta of offensive Pro Bowl selections is Breece Hall. Hall's offseason has been a bit tumultuous, with head coach Aaron Glenn suggesting he may opt for a running back by committee approach, which may limit Hall's carries. But Martuneac believes Hall is about to embark on his best season yet. "Despite somewhat of a down year in 2024, Hall is primed for a career year. By adding Justin Fields, one of the most dynamic running quarterbacks in the NFL, the Jets' run game has the juice for an explosive season. On top of that, they greatly improved the offensive line, as well." Wrote Martuneac. "Don't be surprised if Hall flirts with 2,000 total yards in 2025 give the improvements to both the O-line and quarterback position. The ceiling is truly sky-high for him." Advertisement On the defensive side of the ball, 2024 breakout star Will McDonald IV will finally get his flowers, according to Martuneac. "When the Jets drafted McDonald in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, most analysts had little good to say about the pick, and his rookie season seemed to confirm those doubts. But McDonald silenced all the haters with a mini-breakout in 2024 in which he registered 10.5 sacks and 24 QB hits." Martuneac wrote. "With the highly regarded defensive mind of Aaron Glenn now in New York, expect McDonald to have a true breakout season in 2025. I would not be surprised to see him hit 17 sacks this year. If he can get those numbers and lead a dominant Jets defense to the playoffs, he's a shoo-in for his first Pro Bowl award." Future Hall of Famer and free agent quarterback Aaron Rodgers has put an end to this offseason's most grueling waiting game by confirming that he plans to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Advertisement NFL Network insiders Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport report that Rodgers will sign a one-year contract that an NFL source has suggested to us might be valued in the $30 million range. He is expected fly to Pittsburgh soon and participate in the upcoming mandatory minicamp next week. The Steelers front office now sees their patience and optimism pay off as they completely built their NFL Draft plan based on the assumption that Rodgers would sign and allow them to target other needs outside of a quarterback ... although they only had Mason Rudolph on contract. Pittsburgh would ultimately draft Will Howard as well, but they now fall down the depth chart to back up the four-time MVP. Rodgers enters the AFC North with the opportunity to draw the Steelers closer to contention with the Baltimore Ravens for the division crown. Last season, the Steelers finished second with a 10-7 record - two games behind the division champion Ravens. The 41-year-old is coming off a lousy 2024 campaign with the New York Jets, but with a better supporting cast and new environment to ease his mental state (as best it can), hopefully Rodgers' play will see a bit of resurgence. Advertisement He joins forces with star receiver DK Metcalf and tight end Pat Freiermuth as solid receiving targets along with an eclectic group of pass catchers in Calvin Austin, Roman Wilson and Robert Woods to work with. Rookie running back Kaleb Johnson may start after Najee Harris left in free agency, so the pass game quickly turns into the Steelers expected identity rather than the run with an inexperienced ball carrier. Pittsburgh likely still prefers their chances this season with Rodgers much more than last year's cycle between Russell Wilson and Justin Fields under center, despite the team's moderate success. The end-of-season collapse, however, was especially disappointing. Rodgers' veteran experience could alleviate any of that worry this year. Advertisement The Steelers finished with a 3-3 record in the division during the regular season - beating and losing to each team once. In the Wild Card round of the playoffs, their season came to an end against Baltimore, losing 28-14. The Ravens enter 2025 just as much of a threat as in years past and will remain the Steelers toughest competition in the division. Their Week 11 meeting, an 18-16 Pittsburgh win, was thanks to the heroics of kicker Chris Boswell who accounted for all of the scoring on six field goals. More offensive firepower with Rodgers at the helm should help eliminate low-scoring affairs like this one and many of the Steelers' losses. Having big showings against the division will be extra crucial in revamping this offense's reputation. The Cincinnati Bengals are expected to return many of their offensive weapons as well, with the trio of Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins all on new contracts. Their defense, however, offered little to worry about outside of pass rusher Trey Hendrickson, who is angrily waiting on a deal of his own. If Cincy has any hopes of rebounding from their 9-8 season, Hendrickson is a huge part of that. Advertisement Pittsburgh put on a clinic in their first meeting with Cincinnati, but as the story of the season was, the consistency pendulum swung the opposite way the second time around. The Cleveland Browns are again expected to be the bottom dwellers in the AFC North, as they have an even more controversial quarterback situation than Pittsburgh this offseason. Last season faired decently well for the Steelers, but the addition of Rodgers and Metcalf provide a major shake-up to the offense that head coach Mike Tomlin should be more confident in this season against the AFC North.
