Who was the biggest surprise omission for each PWHL team from their expansion protection list?
While the PWHL has yet to unveil if there will be changes to their playoff format with eight teams now in the league, it's highly likely Seattle and Vancouver will be playing playoff hockey next season, while the existing rosters will take a season or two to recover from the deep cuts the league decided to make to their cores. PWHL fans across the league reacted negatively to the lack of protection for the players they've grown to love, including the exposure of 40 of the 42 players selected in the 2024 PWHL Draft.

As baffling as the PWHL's plan for expansion was, seeing the exposed players which includes finalists for league MVP, Defender of the Year, Forward of the Year, and Rookie of the Year, including the 2024 PWHL Rookie of the Year, Defender of the Year, Goaltender of the Year, three First Team All-Stars, three Second Team All-Stars, and four of five members of the All-Rookie team. In essence, Seattle and Vancouver are picking all-star rosters without reservation.
There were some exposures that surprised more than others. Here's a look at the most shocking omissions from each PWHL team's protected list.
Boston Fleet - Hilary Knight
Knight is a finalist for the PWHL's MVP award this season and top forward. She tied for the league lead in scoring and was the captain of the Boston Fleet, and remains the captain of Team USA. She's a first ballot Hall of Famer who holds every scoring record at the World Championships. Hilary Knight however, is nearing the end of her storied career, although no one is questioning if she can remain a star in the PWHL for a few more seasons. She would be the ultimate face for the game in Seattle to help the league hit the ground running on the west coast, but it doesn't soften the shock and dismay Boston fans feel having one of the legends of the game potentially stolen from their roster.
Minnesota Frost - Sophie Jaques
Minnesota made a trade for Sophie Jaques during season one and it paid dividends. She tied for the PWHL lead in scoring by a defender, helped the Frost win back-to-back Walter Cup titles, and has seen her role grow. She's only getting better and is a finalist for the PWHL's Defender of the Year. Few are as dangerous off the rush and jumping into the play as Jaques, and she'll bring her ever improving game to the west coach and make a significant impact there as well. She flourish in Minnesota, and alongside Claire Thompson, the loss of two elite defenders is going to sting. Minnesota will pray that Nicole Gosling or Rory Guilday can be had in the PWHL Draft.
Montreal Victoire - Erin Ambrose
Montreal loves Erin Ambrose, and Erin Ambrose loves Montreal. She was the 2024 PWHL Defender of the Year, and remains one of the best in the league on and off the ice. Montreal rolled the dice exposing both Ambrose and rookie standout Cayla Barnes on their blueline. Their only hope is that Vancouver picks up Jennifer Gardiner. If the expansion teams pick Ambrose and Barnes, Montreal is going to significantly struggle, and the defensive depth available in free agency and the draft won't be able to recoup what they've lost if the worst case scenario happens.
New York Sirens - Alex Carpenter
A 2024 First Team All-Star and widely acknowledged as a top 10 forward in the world, Alex Carpenter is a game changer on the ice and was half of the PWHL's most dangerous duo alongside rookie sensation Sarah Fillier. Many New York fans couldn't wrap their head around this one, and in terms of on-ice performance, it's a hard pill to swallow. What this omission shows however, is that teams were looking far beyond the scoresheet when considering their options. New York needs a culture change, they need to shake up their roster to get more out of their depth, and this move plays into that decision. Carpenter's skill will be missed if she's selected.
Ottawa Charge - Ashton Bell
Without Ashton Bell, it's hard to imagine the Ottawa Charge get to the Walter Cup finals this year. Bell was part of Ottawa's top pairing that played heavy minutes. She blocked shots, transitioned pucks up ice, and was key to their attack. But Ottawa went with the unique toolkit possessed by Ronja Savolainen. Savolainen has a more club friendly contract with two years remaining, and there's belief she's just scratching the surface of her potential in North America. She got better as the season went on.
Toronto Sceptres - Sarah Nurse
A 2024 PWHL Second Team All-Star, Sarah Nurse was one of the top scoring threats in the league in year one, and if not for an injury in year two, the same could be said. Toronto is lucky to have the depth they do up front, but depending how this process plays out, the Sceptres are likely to lose not only Nurse, but three of Savannah Harmon, Julia Gosling, Emma Maltais, Allie Munroe, or Izzy Daniel as well. It's not a pleasant prospect for the team, but there's perhaps no loss that would hurt more than that of Nurse.

Steelers disrespected in ESPN power rankings, Mike Tomlin named under most pressure
Despite completely overhauling their roster this offseason with Pro Bowlers, First-Team All-Pros, Super Bowl champions, and MVP winners, the Pittsburgh Steelers are still being underestimated by ESPN. According to ESPN's latest power rankings, the Steelers are right in the middle of the pack — listed as the No. 16 team. ESPN's Brooke Pryor also selected HC Mike Tomlin as the person under the most pressure heading into 2025 — which can be read below: "For the second season in a row, Tomlin was the driving force in bringing in a veteran quarterback to lead the franchise," Pryor wrote. "This time, he courted Aaron Rodgers. Tomlin is putting his trust in Rodgers and the rest of his offense that they can expedite the gelling process and produce early in 2025. Realistically, Tomlin, under contract through the 2027 season, isn't going anywhere no matter the outcome of this season. But the fan base will undoubtedly grow restless if another season passes without a playoff win." Everything Pryor wrote about Tomlin is right on the money — but the Steelers' overall placement as the 16th-best team makes little sense. With Pro Bowl-level talent galore on the defensive side of the ball and a completely retooled offense, Pittsburgh deserves a top-10 placement at least. WNBA teams jockey for playoff position behind Minnesota Lynx in postseason race
With less than a month left in the WNBA regular season, the Minnesota Lynx have a firm lock on the top seed in the playoffs. The rest of the postseason picture is still up in the air, with more than half the league jockeying for positioning. Minnesota has looked like the best team all season even with star forward Napheesa Collier sidelined for the past few weeks with a right ankle sprain. The Lynx have won five straight and hold a 6 1/2-game lead in the standings heading into Tuesday night's game at New York. The Lynx look in great shape to have home-court advantage throughout the playoffs, which could be key since they lost a decisive Game 5 in overtime to the Liberty in the WNBA Finals last year. Atlanta, New York, Phoenix and Las Vegas are all within 1 1/2 games of one another for the second through fifth seeds. No team has been hotter lately than Las Vegas. The Aces have won seven straight heading into Tuesday night's game against Atlanta. The streak started after a record blowout loss to Minnesota on Aug. 2. Reigning MVP A'ja Wilson has been huge during the winning streak, averaging 26.1 points and 13.3 rebounds. She topped the 30-point mark three times in the past four games. The Dream have a gauntlet of a schedule in front of them, with two games against Las Vegas and contests against Minnesota and New York over the next eight days. Indiana, Golden State, Seattle, Los Angeles and Washington all are vying for the sixth through eighth seeds. Only a few games separate them. The league switched its first-round format this season, with the best-of-three series having each team get at least one home game. In the past, the higher-seeded team would host the first two games of the series with a deciding Game 3 if necessary being on the lower-seeded team's home court. Minnesota remained the No. 1 team in the poll, with Atlanta still second. Las Vegas jumped two spots to third. New York and Phoenix followed the Aces. Golden State and Indiana were the next two. Washington, Los Angeles and Seattle came after the Fever. Dallas, Connecticut and Chicago rounded out the poll. The Cleveland expansion WNBA team hired Allison Howard as its president, the franchise announced Tuesday. Howard will continue to serve as executive vice president and chief commercial officer for Rock Entertainment Group and the Cleveland Cavaliers, where she oversees corporate and ticket sales revenue and strategy, corporate partnership, membership sales and service, venue experience, ticket operations and youth sports programming. Wilson of Las Vegas was the AP player of the week for the second consecutive week. She averaged 27 points, 13.3 rebounds and 2.3 blocks to help the Aces win all three of their games last week. Other players receiving votes included Sonia Citron of Washington and Alyssa Thomas of Phoenix. New York at Atlanta, Saturday. In a week that features games between Atlanta-Las Vegas, Phoenix-Las Vegas and the Liberty at the Dream, there might be a clearer divide among the top teams. The Liberty have rallied twice to beat the Dream, overcoming double-digit deficits in the victories.

2025 NFL MVP Favorites
2025 NFL MVP Favorites originally appeared on The Spun. (Editor's note: This article is from The Spun by Athlon Sports' 2025 Football Betting Guide — the perfect preseason reference companion for new bettors or sharps alike. Order your copy today online, or pick one up at retail racks and newsstands nationwide.) In sports betting, there is a fine line between reckless and savvy longshot wagers. The NFL MVP award has crystallized this concept over the past decade, forcing oddsmakers to evolve and leaving foolish bettors throwing good money after bad bets. The saga began in 2018, when Patrick Mahomes took the league by storm in his first full season as the Kansas City Chiefs' starting quarterback. The overnight sensation won the MVP, after having odds in the neighborhood of 100/1 the previous summer. Sure enough, the very next season Lamar Jackson did the exact same thing for the Baltimore Ravens. He, too, began the year with 100/1 odds and ultimately hoisted the award. This outlier two-year stretch disrupted what had become a predictable trend of established quarterbacks. However, normalcy was promptly restored, as Aaron Rodgers then went back-to-back for his third and fourth MVPs in Green Bay. But some bettors are still hoping to catch lightning in a similar bottle this season. DraftKings head oddsmaker Johnny Avello has seen significant action on Justin Fields of the New York Jets (200/1) and Shedeur Sanders of the Cleveland Browns (150/1). 'This is all early money and speculation. It's guys with high odds and people taking a shot,' Avello said. 'They're only taking prices that will be long gone if guys start out well.' I would classify those as reckless wagers and 'dead money'. Now, I might have said the same thing in 2018 and 2019 about the eventual winners, but at least the industry has evolved since then, forming a tighter market. Oddsmakers have learned a great deal about creating odds for awards, which is very different from generating odds for actual games. 'I used to not like it but it's been really good because the odds have become much more sophisticated than they were in the beginning,' said SuperBook VP of Risk Management Ed Salmons, a veteran NFL oddsmaker. 'Just following it for the past eight years, it's easier to do now and it's a staple out there. It's definitely something we book every year, and for the most part, we do pretty well with it.' Essentially, oddsmakers have learned from their mistakes with Mahomes and Jackson. No longer will sportsbooks offer such long odds for a quarterback of a potentially high-powered offense. By comparison, QBs with longshot odds entering the 2025 season include Brock Purdy (25/1), Jared Goff (31/1), and Trevor Lawrence (40/1). The usual suspects are the betting favorites with Jackson leading the way with consensus +500 odds. Reigning MVP Josh Allen, Joe Burrow and Mahomes are right behind at +600, while Jayden Daniels (+850) has entered the mix in just his second season. The shortest odds for any non-quarterback is Saquon Barkley with consensus 50/1 odds. He was a finalist last season with 2,005 rushing yards, the eighth-most in NFL history, but ultimately a quarterback won the MVP for the 12th straight year. Salmons firmly believes a quarterback will win MVP for the rest of time, given how pass-happy the NFL has become over the years. 'All leagues have gravitated toward the same stuff. A kicker (Mark Moseley) won in 1982. Can you imagine a kicker winning MVP right now?' 2025 Preseason NFL MVP Odds Here are the most recent NFL MVP odds from bet365 (editor's note: these odds are updated from odds that appear in the magazine): Lamar Jackson +500 Josh Allen +550 Joe Burrow +600 Patrick Mahomes +650 Jayden Daniels +850 Jalen Hurts +1800 Justin Herbert +1800 Jordan Love +2200 C.J. Stroud +2500 Baker Mayfield +2500 Brock Purdy +2800 Caleb Williams +3300 Jared Goff +3300 Dak Prescott +3500 Matthew Stafford +3500 Kyler Murray +4000 Trevor Lawrence +4500 Bo Nix +5000 Drake Maye +5000 Aaron Rodgers +6000 2025 NFL MVP Favorites first appeared on The Spun on Aug 19, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 19, 2025, where it first appeared.
