Snapchat update: New tools for creators, including Timeline editor

Express Tribune13-06-2025
Snapchat is stepping up its competition against Instagram and TikTok with the introduction of a suite of new tools aimed at enhancing content creation for users.
On June 12, the company revealed a new Timeline Editor feature, alongside updates that will simplify video editing and improve content sharing.
The Timeline Editor is a major new addition, designed to offer creators a more intuitive way to edit videos directly on Snapchat.
With a chronological layout, the feature allows users to easily trim, move, and rearrange clips within their video.
Once the sequence is set, creators can add effects, music from Snapchat's Sounds library, and apply other creative tools, making it simpler than ever to produce professional-looking videos without the need for third-party editing apps like CapCut.
For creators seeking an easier way to compile their content, Snapchat is also introducing a new 'Create a Video' template. This feature allows users to select a few Memories, choose a song from the Sounds library, and pick a template to generate a custom compilation video.
This new feature is being rolled out globally on iOS, bringing more options to Snapchat's growing content creation tools.
Additionally, Snapchat is enhancing the platform's functionality by allowing creators to automatically save their public Stories to their profiles. This feature is designed to help users preserve their best moments, creating a lasting collection of memories.
While this move goes against the app's traditional ephemeral nature, it offers a way for users to revisit or showcase their top Stories over time.
Snapchat is also giving creators access to more detailed insights into the performance of their content.

New analytics will show creators the number of viewers who watched their public content over the last 12 days, offering a better understanding of returning viewers.
Users will also be able to track the success of their Spotlight posts and public Stories, with data on total view time and which posts received the most engagement.
Furthermore, Snapchat is offering insights into traffic sources, so creators can see where their views are coming from—whether it's from the Discover For You page, Following, Spotlight, Search, Chat, or Profile.
Finally, Snapchat will provide creators with data on how long users are watching their Spotlight posts, as well as the average percentage of the post that users watched to completion.
These new features are part of Snapchat's ongoing effort to support creators and compete with other social platforms, positioning itself as a key player in the social media space.

Fake TikTok shops linked to malware campaign targeting cryptocurrency

Cybercriminals are exploiting TikTok's shopping feature to distribute malware and steal funds from unsuspecting users. Reported by cybersecurity firm CMT360, the scheme involves fraudsters creating convincing imitations of legitimate e-commerce profiles, often using AI-generated content to bolster credibility. These fake 'TikTok Shops' - also seen on Facebook - advertise steep discounts to lure potential buyers. Once users click through, they are redirected to phishing portals disguised as genuine retail sites. According to CTM360, more than 10,000 fraudulent URLs have been traced to TikTok Wholesale and Mall pages. 🚨 15,000+ fake TikTok Shop domains are being used in an AI-powered scam campaign dubbed ClickTok, blending phishing, malware, and crypto theft into one deceptive funnel. Some operations go further, posing as affiliate management services and distributing malicious apps designed to compromise sellers' devices, as reported by TechRadar. One identified strain, dubbed SparkKitty, has the capability to harvest sensitive information from both Android and iOS devices, enabling long-term surveillance and control. Investigators say over 5,000 malicious download sources - often spread via embedded links or QR codes - have been uncovered in connection with the campaign. 🚨ALERT: Fake TikTok Clones Target Crypto Users Cyber firm CTM360 warns of 'FraudonTok' 15K+ fake TikTok sites & apps using AI deepfakes + SparkKitty malware to steal seed phrases. 🧠 Tip: Never store seed phrases on your phone. — BeInCrypto (@beincrypto) August 8, 2025 The attackers frequently use high-pressure sales tactics, such as countdown timers and 'flash sales,' to prompt snap decisions. Many of the fraudulent sites operate under low-cost domain extensions like '.top', '.shop', and '.icu', allowing them to be set up quickly and inexpensively. CMT360 urge users to verify web addresses before entering payment details, avoid direct cryptocurrency or wire transfers, and install robust security software to block malicious sites. 'Even professional-looking storefronts can conceal highly sophisticated scams,' CTM360 noted.

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja has linked the much-anticipated 5G spectrum auction with the resolution of two key issues including the acquisition of Telenor by the PTCL and ongoing spectrum litigation cases. A new policy is being drafted to allow smartphones on easy installments. She also stated that inflation and policy rates have declined due to better integration of digital systems. The minister revealed that Pakistan's IT exports rose by $1 billion over the past two years, with 96 percent of freelancers contributing over $700 million. Additionally, 1.2 million laptops were distributed on merit, with another 100,000 to be provided soon. Musk's X embroiled in child pornography lawsuit

A federal appeals court on Friday revived part of a lawsuit accusing Elon Musk's X of becoming a haven for child exploitation, though the court said the platform deserves broad immunity from claims over objectionable content, reported Reuters. While rejecting some claims, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco said X, formerly Twitter, must face a claim it was negligent by failing to promptly report a video containing explicit images of two underage boys to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). The case predated Musk's 2022 purchase of Twitter. A trial judge had dismissed the case in December 2023. X's lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Musk was not a defendant. One plaintiff, John Doe 1, said he was 13 when he and a friend, John Doe 2, were lured on SnapChat into providing nude photos of themselves to someone John Doe 1 thought was a 16-year-old girl at his school. The SnapChat user was actually a child pornography trafficker who blackmailed the plaintiffs into providing additional explicit photos. Those images were later compiled into a video that was posted on Twitter. According to court papers, Twitter took nine days after learning about the content to take it down and report it to NCMEC, following more than 167,000 views, court papers showed. Circuit Judge Danielle Forrest said section 230 of the federal Communications Decency Act, which protects online platforms from liability over user content, didn't shield X from the negligence claim once it learned about the pornography. "The facts alleged here, coupled with the statutory 'actual knowledge' requirement, separates the duty to report child pornography to NCMEC from Twitter's role as a publisher," she wrote for a three-judge panel. X must also face a claim its infrastructure made it too difficult to report child pornography. It was found immune from claims it knowingly benefited from sex trafficking, and created search features that "amplify" child pornography posts. Dani Pinter, a lawyer at the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, which represented the plaintiffs, said in a statement: "We look forward to discovery and ultimately trial against X to get justice and accountability." The case is Doe 1 et al v Twitter Inc et al, 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, No 24-177.
